Rants & Raves

  • Follow Metro

Comments from readers:

I WOULD LIKE to give a huge rave for the woman at Tires Plus on Robert C. Daniel Jr. Parkway on Saturday who paid for two of my tires. She is a stranger to me but knew that I needed help and would not take no for an answer. She is definitely an angel to me and I will always be grateful to her. This is what Christmas is all about!

THIS IS MORE of a plea, but it could turn into a rave. The center lines on Stevens Creek Road between Riverwatch and Claussen Road are all but gone, cars are all over the road at night. Please fix this before someone gets hurt, (city of Augusta).

IF YOU HAVE nowhere to go and all day to get there, how about getting over in the slow lane?

HERE'S A RANT to the folks who get so overworked about these 150th anniversary observations of Civil War events. It's history, people. It won't change, and we all know how the story ends. The Confederacy will lose the war and y'all can rave about it from 2013 on.

DEAR SOUTH CAROLINA ETV: Can someone please explain to me why you chose three days before Christmas to air a special on the life of Buddha?

I AM TRULY SORRY that the people at Olin will lose their jobs in 2012, but is this really anyone's fault other than Olin? They have known for over seven years about the problems they were causing to the Savannah River. I am a proud supporter of the Savannah Riverkeeper and am very thankful they are here to protect "our" drinking water here in Augusta.

THIS IS A RANT complaining about those poor overworked postal workers. You talk about slow motion. Go up to the VA emergency clinic someday. You'll see no motion.

TO THE PUNK or punks who broke into my friend's house on Hickory Drive and stole all the kids' Christmas, I have to ask, how do you sleep at night? You ruined my friend's Christmas. I just can't believe you did something like that.

A STORY MENTIONS the city paying for some road work with "leftover Special Purpose Local-Option Sales Tax 5 funds." Obviously, the original "purpose" was non-existent, otherwise, there'd be no money "left over." This is proof positive that anything from the mouths of politicians called a SPLOST is a political fraud from the beginning. Only suckers vote for a scam.

A POLICEMAN IS teaching parents about gang warning signs, like a kid carrying a red bandana in his hip pocket. Does that mean that an innocent 70-year-old man who happens to find bandanas convenient and cheap can get killed because he's practical?

YOU KNOW THAT if you haven't paid your trash bill, they're not going to pick it up. So does your whole neighborhood. Please do not deface our neighborhood with your overflowing trash can, mattresses, etc.

#5 - I know this is hard for some people to accept BUT not everyone is a Christian and not everyone celebrates Christmas. There are hundreds of other religions out there and more than a couple of religious holidays that fall around this time of the year. You "War on Christmas" folks need to get over yourselves. Your holiday isn't the only one worth celebrating...

I hope the RiverKeeper can

I hope the RiverKeeper can cover the incomes and taxes lost by Olin closing. A rant for Olin for not investing in it's own plant and trying to find a way to clean up the discharge into the Savannah. I know it may cut profits but wow, it's a lot better than closing.

Holidays come and go, and are celebrated. BUT..The Holiday being celebrated by so many this week is Christmas and the birth of Christ.
I know, we could call it the 4th of July, but let's wait for July to do that.

Happy Holidays Vs. Merry

Happy Holidays Vs. Merry Christmas

1) The current legal decisions that public money can not be used to fund any particular religion. This is an ongoing area of dispute as governments at all levels attempt to determine what constitutes an establishment of religion.

2) Various non-government organizations attempting to use as inclusive a term as possible.

Since the first item is legal issue that depends on the way that the US Constitution is read and affects how governments spend tax dollars, it doesn't have much to do with what the greeter at Walmart says. And that, it seems, is where the current discussion is focussed.

And I'm not clear what the fuss is. I agree, some things are dumb: It's not a "Holiday Tree", it's a "Christmas Tree" just like "Turkish candy" and "French fries" are what they are called.

However, at the risk of pointing out the obvious: Walmart is not a Christian organization. Nor are governments--people are Christians, not organizations. It's not surprising then that, as a business rather than a Christian organization, Walmart might choose to greet customers with a term that includes as many of their customers as possible.

There also seems to be a misconception that people avoid saying "Merry Christmas" because they don't want to offend others. Let me use an anology: My mother brought me up to show good manners and respect to others. No one who uses "Happy Holidays" is suggesting that others will be offended by using "Merry Christmas" (at least, no one with a brain). In the same way, I use "Please" and "Thank you" not because their ommission will offend anyone but because omitting those courtesy terms shows a lack of respect to others. In the same way, I might use "Happy Holidays" to those of my friends who are non-Christians as a way of showing respect for their traditions (even if I don't share them). I suspect that commercial organizations follow the same line of thought. It's not offending others that worries them so much as showing some respect for other's differing beliefs.

In fact the only people who seem to be offended in this discussion are those who insist that everyone must wish them a "Merry Christmas." It seems to me that insisting that people say "Merry Christmas" because 85% of the population is Christian is an odd thing to demand in a nation that values free speech. It seems to me that insisting that everyone who enters Walmart be greeted with "Merry Christmas" because I'm a Christian is--well--un-Christian.

I think I must be missing the point.

The complaining drivers are

The complaining drivers are often in TOO much of a hurry. This morning I was waiting behind several other cars on Boy Scout at Washington Rd. An ambulance was coming with lights flashing and siren going but the impatient van driver behind me repeatedly blew his LOUD horn. I guess he/she would have pulled out, ignoring the emergency vehicle.
The thing is...
Calm down, you might get where you are going even sooner.

War on Christmas? What war on

War on Christmas? What war on Christmas?

Does anyone here remember an official war declared on Christmas? Do you remember any edict handed down from the government saying that Christianity could not be celebrated? I sure don't!

And if there was an edict handed down that banned Christmas, nobody is paying much attention to it. I haven't seen any less Christmas wreaths, churches celebrating Christmas, manger scenes, or anything else this year. If Christmas is being or has been "banned", how could any of the churches in this nation celebrate Christmas?

Could it be that the issue is not that Christmas is being banned, but Christians expect everyone to celebrate Christmas their way?

We live in a culturally and religiously diverse country. Not everyone living in this country is a Christian or celebrates Christmas. If Christians should have the right to celebrate Christmas their way, shouldn't non-Christians?

I would very much like someone to explain to me how a clerk at Target saying 'Happy Holidays' instead of 'Merry Christmas' will destroy Christmas or God - both of which have survived two-thousand plus years on their own without Target or any other franchise's help. Christmas and the Christian faith must truly be fragile if saying 'Happy Holidays' will make them self-destruct. I wasn't aware that it was Target's Official Duty to uphold Christmas anyway.

Having said all that, let me say that banning manger scenes, the colors red and green and Christmas carols really is going too far. However, these instances are so few and far between, it is hard to rationalize a school district banning the use of the colors red and green in Akron and a city banning manger scenes in Detroit constitute a "war on Christmas".

Here's a solution to Faux News's 'holy war': why don't Christians celebrate Christmas their way, and allow non-Christians to celebrate Christmas their way. Problem solved.

I'd also like to comment quickly on people, who dismiss any critics of this "war" as "liberals". It's not 'liberal' to have the common sense to see that this "war against Christmas" is contrived! Evidence completely disproving the so-called "ban" on Christmas abounds. If you people are too stuck in your persecution complexes to see it, that's your problem.

To all my Democrat friends:

To all my Democrat friends:

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally
conscious, socially responsible,low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the
winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious
persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the
religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice
religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally
fulfilling and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar
year 2011, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose
contributions to society have helped make America great. Not to imply that America is necessarily
greater than any other country nor the only America in the Western Hemisphere. Also, this wish is
made without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual
preference of the wishee.

To all my Republican friends:

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

User420 I don't believe for a minute that all liberals are waging a war on Christmas. It's actually the left wing nutcases.
And as far as Target is concerned my family and I quit shopping at this left-wing store a few years back when I found out about their stand on Toys-For-Tots. Under our Constitution as it is now, and until the present administration ravages it to suit their agenda, they have the right to omit Christmas, and promote Satanic, Pornographic, or other beliefs, just as we have the right to not shop there.

ETLITES This country was founded on Christian Principles, we do not care what religion you want to practice, just keep the mouths shut about Christianity. If someone is not happy with us saying Merry Christmas rather than some other BS to make you happy get over it and buy a ticket on one of the 3 airlines that serve Augusta and get your fuzzy little butts to your preferred country, that would make more people happy besides yourselves.
