Rants & Raves

Comments from readers:

A Rant to the person that stated we have the Lord's Prayer back in schools. I will make a deal with you. The schools will have the Lord's Prayer and a Bible in every desk if we can start taxing the churches. These days, the church is just a tax-free business anyway.

Rant to Richmond County commissioners: You are going to have a mess on your hands furloughing employees, even law enforcement and fire departments. Are you serious? Where is the logic? Employee morale is very low (some departments haven't had raises in three years) . I guess you just figure you can hire some criminals and pay them less. Criminals have already taken over the streets - you have cut law enforcement hours - why not let them take over county offices too?

Illegal immigration exclusively a federal issue? Does that mean that since bank robbery is a federal crime that there can be no local law enforcement?

After working with the public for so many years I have gained much appreciation and respect for my parents . We were always clean and well behaved when we were in public and always had respect for ourselves and others. And never would my mom let me out of the house sick.

THIS IS FOR the commissioners: I hope you sat down with your family for Thanksgiving and had a good meal. While all the city employees didn't have one because of the furlough days. This is for the police and firefighters; my heart goes out to you and your families . At least someone cares!

I was just in Augusta visiting family over the Thanksgiving holiday. It was really depressing to see the decaying state of the Riverwalk and all of the boarded-up buildings along Broad Street. It looked like the set from a post-apocalyptic zombie movie. I was really hoping things had improved in Augusta in the past 10 years. I guess I was wrong.

Thank you to the two gentlemen that stopped and helped my husband change his flat tire in front of the retina eye center. My husband has only one eye and I had just had a shot in one of my eyes. So we were so thankful when these two young men stopped to take over. We want to thank them so very much.

I went to the Aiken Mall yesterday. Everything was fine until I went to one of the stores and they didn't have the same items that they had in the Augusta paper. That's frustrating. You go to buy something and you have to go all the way to Augusta. Thank you, no.

Let the sheriff and the marshal's department share the substation in Harrisburg. Save the taxpayers a million dollars supposing to build one for the marshal's department. Plus it would be closer to the courts.

Rants to all those stores who opened on Thanksgiving Day. Your employees need to be with their families on this day. Everything is about money now, and they lost my business because of this.

#7 Thanks for the only upbeat thought in this R&R. All you Whiners and grumps need to be thankful to be above ground. Greyhound is ready when you are. And if you're fortunate enough to have a vehicle, let your clutch out, and give us all a break.

Maybe you should come visit

Maybe you should come visit Riverwalk during the summer when its not cold, and the flowers and trees are at their best? It may be the South but everything still goes dormant...

I'm sorry Augusta folks, I

I'm sorry Augusta folks, I have to agree with rant #6. In the early '80's I would visit Augusta, and I wondered then why it was not a better looking, more up to date city. I still feel that way. It's almost like no one cares enough to do any better. And ranter #1, tax away! Whatever it takes for a child to hear GOD's word, that would maybe never hear in their home, go for it!

Double thanks to the young

Double thanks to the young men who helped change the tire. There are still a lot of nice people in this world, they just don't often make the paper. Also thanks to the lady who took the time to add her nice comment here.

dear ranters 2 & 5, the
Unpublished

dear ranters 2 & 5, the commissioners don't care about you or your families, their philosophy as stated by a few commissioners in the past is "they better be lucky they have a job"....hence the poor morale. they feel the work and sacrifices by the current employees is of little significance to them. that's why they are more than willing to lay-off line employees under the guise of "cost control" than to cut spending on all NON-ESSENTIAL projects or wasteful, costly and useless "STUDIES"

1. Tax em. That's cool with

1. Tax em. That's cool with me.
2. Furloughs have to be the dumbest idea ever. Especially the fire and police departments.
3. Illegal immigration will be the downfall of this great country. It's hard enough to support the lazy Americans that dont feel they should work because they have 23 kids, add a bunch of illegals that make cash and send it abroad without ever payig taxes, its just too much.
4. Some individuals dont see the harm in spreading a bunch of germs around.
5. Making the Thanksgiving Holiday an unpaid holiday is ridiculous. Maybe they should take away some of the 100 other paid holidays away that really arent needed (or necessary).
6. Downtown Augusta will always be like a psuedo abandoned city because of the riff-raff that gravitates to that area. Why fix something up and make it nice just to have drunks urinate all over it?
7. It is nice to see people going out of their way to help others.
8. Not a big fan of the Aiken mall, or the Augusta mall.
9. Sharing is something we learn as kids.
10. Stores open on Thanksgiving day for the same reason the movies open on Christmas, people want something to do after their holidays. Last time I checked the employees got paid to be there.

I know that the commissioners

I know that the commissioners don't have furlough days because they are elected. Just wondering, does the City Administrator and staff have to take furlough time? Just look at their ridiculous salaries:

ALLEN, TAMEKA N ADMINISTRATOR DEPUTY ADMINISTRATOR $114,164.73 $58.54 63 10/28/1992
ALSTON, ALEXANDRA ADMINISTRATOR EXECUTIVE SECRETARY I $29,674.84 $15.21 43 9/7/1999
HUDSON, SARAH J. ADMINISTRATOR ADMINISTRATIVE ASST I $33,173.03 $17.01 44 2/1/1999
LEVERETT, ROBERT ADMINISTRATOR DEPUTY ADMINISTRATOR $94,398.29 $48.40 63 8/23/1971

#7 - I sure hope those two

#7 - I sure hope those two gentlemen drove you home too as the idea of either of you driving scares the heck out of me. If unable to see enough to change a tire, should you be driving at all? I always thought eye doctors recommended not driving after certain type of procedures.

karey - please explain what

karey - please explain what is rediculous about those salaries. Heck the executive secretary salary is laughable compared to what a private sector executive secretary would earn. You may want to better understand the educational, job history and experience required to perform these roles before deciding who is overpaid.

After seeing Unbelieveables

After seeing Unbelieveables comments, the rant about holidays and commissioners has confused me. Exactly what is the rant?? That they don't work and not paid, or that because of furlough they can't afford a dang turkey? Either way, YAWN..

To last ranter.. What?? Um, does your brain not compute that many work the holidays? So, let's shut down the entire country on Thanksgiving.. Least they get Christmas day off where many do not. You sound like a real winner, oops, meant whiner!!
I'm sure the stores are not crying over losing your business.. But thank you for a good laugh this AM!

It might surprise the ranter

It might surprise the ranter to know that some employees ask to work on holidays. Some for the extra money and some because they are alone and lonely.

Say what? Downtown Augusta is

Say what? Downtown Augusta is a HUNDRED times better than ten years ago... I live on Broad street and have definitely noticed the huge diffrence... There's nothing but a bunch of professionals walking up and down broad street during the day.. The nightlife is much better than it used to be too....

The daily amount foot traffic in 2010 CRUSHES the foot traffic ten years ago. Look at the pictures below....

There are ALOT less empty buildings downtown compared to ten years ago... Did you not notice the numerous new private investments? Toole Engineering, RW Allen, Enterprise Mill, Whites Building, Green Building, Johnson Building, Sutherland Mill, Emporium Condos, Nicholas Dickinson & Associates, Loft Ideas building, Fatmans, and the multiple new restaurants and businesses.

Ask any member of the Young Professionals of Augusta where they live or want to live? Besides the Summerville/Hill/Midtown area, you'll automatically hear downtown or areas surrounding downtown(Olde Towne).

The YMCA recently moved into the Health Central building downtown because of the ongoing revitalization.. There are many cities the size of Augusta who don't have a YMCA located downtown.

ESI spent $4 million dollars on their Broad street headquarters.

Arist Row is a highly sought after place to live.. Full of yuppies, liberals, and a indie crowd.

The $40 million Tee Center, $70 million Judicial Center, $10 million parking deck(first level retail and commercial space)are all under construction downtown. This doesn't include Saint Sebastian, $4 million lights/lamps on Broad street, Hyatt, Holiday Inn Express. There is major construction right outside of downtown too. Including a $100 million Kroc Center, Paine College construction, and the $100 million Dental school in the Medical District.

It's nice to see 4

It's nice to see 4 construction projects within a mile of each other along Peach Orchard road...

The former Golden Corral is being converted into Hibach Sushsi....

The old bojangles has been demolished and something is under construction on the site.....

There is construction(seems to be a office building) next to the Ryan's....

There's a construction project going on near the 520 bridge next to Carne's auto sales...

Other new businesses in South Augusta include Blue Seas Wings & Things and Chef Redd's on Gordon Hwy next to the Regency mall.

Furloughs for cops, teachers,

Furloughs for cops, teachers, and firefighters makes no sense. Furloughing the 'Deputy Administrator' for one day would allow 3 or 4 of these other 'public servants' to work those days. Why do we need 2 Deputy Administrators?

If downtown Augusta looks

If downtown Augusta looks like a zombie movie then you should visit Regency Mall, it looks like it belongs in Fallout 3 or could blend right in at Pripyat.

For those of you unhappy with your city/county job I'd gladly trade with you.

All4Mine you don't have to go

All4Mine you don't have to go to a church building to be saved. A lot of churches only think about money. If they are running a business they should be taxed. If they are dripping in gold and rolex watches and planes and huge mansions with worshipers' money, then they are wolves in sheeps clothing.

God doesn’t make deals. He’s

God doesn’t make deals. He’s still running things anyway. This is plain ole jealousy, nothing more. NEXT…

Mess on your hands = difficulties of all kinds as a result of…
Yes…serious, no…logic.
How about hire someone who isn’t already a criminal and fire the criminals they let stay employed like the time card cheaters, school embezzlers, good-ole-boy commissioners and so forth?
As to local LE…I have mixed opinions…some do good jobs and others are lazy, but this is true in all workplaces. I would not have them waste their training on paper pushing either. That would be a real waste of taxpayer money.

Yes, it’s always been a federal law….and so, enforced by the same. When a bank is robbed local LE is involved as perhaps first on the scene, but Federal laws supersede local and so their respective authorities.

Yes, you have learned to behave as society expects one to do. Honor God, family and country.
We accept you. Good for your mom.

Yes, they likely did. But ALL city employees went w/o a Thanksgiving meal? REAAAAALY?
There was an awful lot of free food out there for anyone enterprising enough to locate where and when. I don’t feel that bad for ya. You should be celebrating what you are thankful for and quit yer whining. There are many out there who would be thankful for just one hot meal a week served among friends and family. What a gripe!

Yes, things are in a bit of deceleration throughout the country...folks who over spent are getting what they put into their efforts…a lot of debt they can’t pay. Until people here make enough to support Augusta downtown as envisioned w numerous shops etc, the growth will be hit-and-miss at best. This is just the way things are. Clean up the crime, get the citizens involved in fighting for safer living conditions and instead of whining, make a contribution to some worthwhile cause to enable others to do the right things.

Ah, MaGGoo…if the two of them were potato heads they could have put the two good eyes on one head and solved the problem…obviously they had something similar in mind as they suggest they were about to leave in a condition where their sight was impaired at the very least…perhaps God was slowing you both down long enough to make it safe for you to drive home w/o pulling the MaGGoo moves on your fellow drivers.

Yes, but did you inquire why they could not pull your item and send it to your store and purchase it in advance in Aiken? Sounds to me like you needed an excuse to go shop at the mall.

Yes, the marshal could share an office. Yes, save us money.
Rants to all those stores who opened on Thanksgiving Day. Your employees need to be with their families on this day. Everything is about money now, and they lost my business because of this.
Yes, Virginia there is a Santa Claus, and he buys and sells like any other Babylonian in these last days. So, where did you send that cousin to get that last can of cranberry sauce?

Dat's my two cents wuff. Ya'll have a great last day of the month. Gubment checks hit this week. G'day.
