Deer hunts will close Mistletoe State Park

  • Follow Metro

Mistletoe State Park on Thurmond Lake will close for three days Friday through Sunday while deer management hunts are being conducted. The park near Appling will reopen at 7 a.m. Monday.

Hunters were chosen by lottery earlier this year, and the hunts are used as a wildlife management tool rather than for recreation. The ecosystem within Mistletoe State Park has been damaged by the overabundance of deer, and by reducing the herd, the park hopes to help provide a more healthy ecosystem for all species.

75 deer in 3 square miles of

75 deer in 3 square miles of forest doesn't seem excessive to me. 65 hunters chose to hunt? And HOW MANY deer are going to be killed off? One per hunter?????? Geez.......

That IS a lot of deer- and
Unpublished

That IS a lot of deer- and more than likely the hunters will be given so many deer tags for the event. Just because 75 hunters will be given an opportunity to hunt the land doesn't mean all 75 will be killed. With 75 or so known deer are in the area- the next round of breeding will bring their levels way too high

Some people need to find out

Some people need to find out what happens to our deer when the numbers are not thinned down. It is not a pretty sight to see an animal that cannot find enough food to sustain itself. Be safe hunters!

Lot's of ignorance towards

Lot's of ignorance towards hunting. People that do not like hunting or do not understand hunting should just keep Quiet. It is your choice not to care for it just as it is our choice to do it. Keep out of our world and we will leave you alone. Please look up CWD in Deer then come talk to us.

Sounds like a big Redneck

Sounds like a big Redneck jamboree. They can carry their lawn chairs and just shoot the poor beast when they stampede up to them. It'll be better than shooting fish in a barrel. But keep in mind the slaughters are doing the beast a big favor. It they don't kill them, they'll just have fun and multiply.
