Illegal student found guilty

  • Follow Metro

MARIETTA, Ga. --- An illegal immigrant college student whose arrest for a minor traffic violation touched off a wider immigration debate was found guilty Thursday in a suburban Atlanta court of driving without a license. But jurors acquitted the 22-year-old woman of a second charge arising from the traffic stop last March.

Jurors in Cobb County found Jessica Colotl guilty of driving without a license after about 30 minutes of deliberations. They acquitted her of a second charge of impeding the flow of traffic stemming from the stop.

"I don't agree with it, but I have to follow the verdict," Colotl said.

Attorney Jerome Lee said Colotl will appeal the verdict.

Police at Kennesaw State University northwest of Atlanta stopped the political science major March 29 in a car on a campus parking lot. There was little dispute Thursday over facts as prosecutors and Colotl's defense both agreed she was in the driver's seat and didn't present a valid license at the time.

After briefly detaining her, Cobb authorities turned her over to federal immigration officials once they learned she was in the country illegally. She was 11 when her parents crossed the border with her from Mexico.

Colotl spent 37 days in immigration detention but U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials subsequently agreed to delay action on Colotl's case for a year while she completes her studies.

wizzard, do you think they

wizzard, do you think they just fill out a form to become "legal"? It's a lot more complicated than that. And you cannot get public assistance if you are not here legally. Get your facts.

Tell how it is noway! People

Tell how it is noway! People are so ignorant, about the only ones that get benefits are Cubans with the wetfoot/dryfoot policy, which is absurd and U.S. citizens. The ones that come from Mexico, Hondorus and Guatamala come to work and better theirselves. People should not blame them for that...look how many americans don't want to work and wait for their foodstamps and checks every month. DISGUSTING! Their countries do not offer that, maybe that is why they WANT to work and support their families even with all the racism they put up with here. Do some history research and see how people started living in America.

You should do some

You should do some research.Catering to illegal immigrants in Ca.costs $12 billion of their $20 billion education budget.12% of children born in the U S in 2008 were born to illegal immigrants and their bills paid for by tax paying citizens. They come here because they know they can get free assistance, work "under the table",send money home, and have no fear of being prosecuted for any crimes.plus they could be granted citizenship with full amnesty.

No citizenship or work

No citizenship or work permit? Then you get: No education K-12. No College. No job. No living quarters. No welfare. No food stamps. And especially No Vote!

The United States does not have billions to waste. Send them home and severely penalize landlords & employers who rent to them or hire them. Fire govt workers who approve their entitlement benefits or their education without proof of legal residency/citizenship.

Do all of this and they will leave. Problem solved in about 6 months.
