Black neighbors to picket SC woman's Confederate flag

Resident says it's a heritage display

  • Follow Metro

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. --- Annie Chambers Caddell, whose ancestors fought in the Civil War, insists the Confederate flag flying over her home is an important reminder of her heritage. For others in the historically black neighborhood, it's an unpleasant reminder of a bygone era they'd rather not see.

Annie Chambers Caddell stands outside her home in Summerville, S.C. The Confederate flag behind her has raised concern in her predominantly black neighborhood.

Caddell, who is white, moved into the Brownsville neighborhood in June and began flying the flag about a month later. Since then, more than 200 residents have signed a protest petition, and neighbors plan to march today along the street in front of Caddell's house.

"My first reaction was they are going to do what they think they need to do," said Caddell, 50. "My second reaction was I'm not going to be here."

Caddell plans to be on nearby James Island for the wedding of a black friend. She tearfully told the town council this week that she is not racist.

She also flies the American flag from her modest brick house, and her yard has various ornaments, including a gnome, Halloween and Thanksgiving decorations, and a "Confederate Boulevard" sign on her fence.

"That flag means a lot more to me than anything I can describe to you," Caddell said. "It's my heritage, and it's my right. I'm not trying to slam anybody, and I wish I wouldn't be slammed either."

James Patterson, a 43-year-old crane operator who lives in a mobile home next door, said displaying the flag is insensitive.

"I know she has a legal right to do that on her property. But just because it's legally right, doesn't make it morally right," said Patterson, who is black. "You can put up what you want, but if this was a Jewish community and someone moved in and started flying swastika flags, there would be a lot of hell raised about that as well."

Violet Saylor, 74, a retired social worker who lives about three blocks away, said the flag brings back memories of Jim Crow in the neighborhood that she has lived in all her life.

"She shouldn't fly that flag because it represents slavery and the Ku Klux Klan that used to ride through the town and we used to have to turn our lights off and hide behind the shades," Saylor said.

The town of Summerville has said that although Caddell has the right to fly the flag, neighbors also have the right to march.

See its funny to see ignorant

See its funny to see ignorant people argue.. Hmm, where is that history book.. AH! yes.. The south broke away for a number of reasons, one of them was not slavery. This is fact because of the use of common sense. Tell me how the north can fight for the emancipation of slaves in the south when this peculiar institution still existed in the north? Slavery wasn't abolished until 1868, 3 years after the war. Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland, and Delaware still had slaves. (Union States) The slavery issue was not a factor in the Civil War until the Emancipation Proclamation. The Confederate states seceded from the union over the issue of states rights and the power of state governments to totally rule over its land and decide its own issues.
So why is the Battle Standard of the Confederacy pointed towards slavery and hate? Still wondering and shaking my head.. As a matter of fact, the south did something that most people want TODAY.. Freedom from the Federal government rule and keeping Big Brother out of our backyards!

So I see it as anyone who is

So I see it as anyone who is against "wire-tapping" and against GPS tracking devices with out warrants, anyone who is against our rights being infringed on (which more or less are becoming privileges not so much rights) should go out and fly the Confederate Flag as a symbol that we don't stand for what the Federal Govt' thinks is the best way to handle things. No matter who we elect, there is corruption.

I hung a TN state flag at a work place some years ago and people thought it was a Confederate flag! Yeah, it's red white and blue, but so was the federal flag of that era! How can people get so offended at the Confederate flag but NOT care about our young people either wearing pants that droop around the bottom of their buttocks or pants so tight that they look like they've been painted on! Some people have their priorities in the wrong order! Take care of the current!

would there be protests if black people flew a flag of martin luther king jr? no...there are many people that proudly display flags of all sorts, why is it a hateful or disrespectful sign for whites to be proud of something? i would probably sue everybody who signs a petition to make me remove it for there has to be a civil right here some where for us...time to take a stand for our history and be proud. why can't we all just get along? live our own lives. no family is "pure" of any 1 particular race....

MLK cant keep African Americans from being thrown out of their homes by the banks. Stonewall Jackson cant ride to DC and fight this bunch of greedy crooks that are destroying our future.Whomever you are, you are not going to have a quality of life as good as its been. The common man is manipulated by the wealthy and the spin doctors that plant ideas so we will be distracted from what they are up to. This flag thing is one of them. Addison, yeah, those 3 stars will get 'em every time, you know?

What is sad is that the blacks in that neighborhood are all for civil rights if it's for them, but not for whites.

They would have plenty to say if someone told them they couldn't wear traditional African clothing, or wear Malcolm X t shirts, or celebrate that horrible made-up holiday, Kwanzaa.

That flag disgusts me as a

That flag disgusts me as a symbol of treason! The federal government then, as well as now did not behave as a tyrant,- that tyrant were the slave owners themselves. Slavery was the issue around any other claim for leaving the Union.
Georgia erred grievously in trying to leave our magnificent Union. That contemptible flag is no part of my heritage- Old Glory is. I joined the army as a citizen of all the states. No one can proclaim that flag could ever be part of my heritage!
It only belongs in museums and homes as a relic of history of shame for the war the slaveocracy brought upon my region and- that evil heritage of Jim Crow. Yes, many of the slave owners were not much better off than the slaves.
Abraham Lincoln is part of my heritage rather than that traitor who led those mistaken rebels, Jefferson Davis. Yes, those rebel soldiers fought for their mistaken duty gallantly and were not traitors.Lee did reestablish himself as a patriot.
Daniel Webster is part of my glorious heritage- the Union forever!
I hailed the end of laws against miscegenation when in 1976, the Supreme Court ended those repressive laws.
And Pres. Wilson, an economic liberal blasphemed the Constitution with his part in segregation.
We sons and daughters of this New South are carrying the better part of our heritage forwards that Henry Brady didn't forsee!
Thus, that lady falsely sees that symbol of tyranny as a decent part of our heritage. Her neighbors and I rightfully object to its display on her property, but she can do as she pleases for sure. Yes, that flag ranks with the Swastika and that of the Soviet Union!
Whilst much evil was perpetrated in the name of Old Glory, she is glorius!

Mable, I speak of anything

Mable, I speak of anything that may offend, not just slavery. I used to fly the same flag as a mater of pride in being a southerner. But one day after having a black friend over (whom did not say a word about it) I just thought about it differently and removed the flag.
Now I have ever right to fly the flag if I wish, but why after concerns have been shown in a community would she wish to do so?
Understanding of others is what is needed in this country and we must all learn to get along. How do we stand united if we are constantly standing apart?

I can't understand how the confederate "Battle Flag" has caused so much stupidity. History is History. I personally enjoy the history of the cicil war. I used to give horse drawn carriage tours in Charleaston and told the history of the blacks and whites. The black culture of the Low Country is absolutely facinating whereas the white history is the same. If you disagree with me I'll sick the "Root Doctor" on you!

corgi - "They would have plenty to say if someone told them they couldn't wear traditional African clothing, or wear Malcolm X t shirts, or celebrate."

Traditional African clothing, Malcolm X and Kwanzaa have not been the background of countless lynchings, beatings, murders, terror, homes burned or other atrocities. Your racist ideology is exposing itself.

"that horrible made-up holiday, Kwanzaa"
I hate to be the one to tell you this, but ALL holidays are made up. This does not take away from their significance for those who celebrate them. Perhaps if you did a little research on Kwanzaa, its meanings and symbolisms and how it is celebrated, you will find that it is a celebration of love, brotherhood, unity of all, love, peace and self reliance.

Peace.

If these guys did a little

If these guys did a little research they would see that the confederacy and that flag did not really represent racism. It is only seen that way because of bunch of yahoos in white robes made it that way. Before the civil war, and after the civil war it was just a flag, but thanks to the ku klux klan, it represents hatred. Now if you have any kind of southern pride (black or white) concerning the confederacy you are seen as a racist. I guess we should stop the civil war renactments as well. While we are at it, why don't we just write the civil war out of the history books. That way after a few generations maybe our childrens children will forget. It is obvious that generations of today will neither forget nor forgive.

Also,

If the shoe were on the other foot, and the south had won the war, would we be having the same discussion about the American Flag? Perhaps so. Perhaps white people would be calling the American flag a symbol of racism. After all, history is always written by the victor.

When are blacks going to stop
Unpublished

When are blacks going to stop the stupidity. It was the blacks of Africa that sold other blacks to the english first. There were close to 90,000 blacks that died defending that stars and bars that you fuss about over half of those that did, did so on their own accord. The only people that see it as a sign of slavery are the foolish ones. If you want to complain go to africa and complain to your own race. No one that are fussing has ever been a slave, every person that was ever a slave is dead now just like the soldiers that fought in the civil war. Get the hell over the flag issue and do something constructive rather than always try to be destructive like fools tend to do.

Momster, that is somewhat

Momster, that is somewhat like 'the pot calling the kettle black'. An old expression, not racist. You are making racist remarks about the Klan. I have no statistics to support my statement, so don't ask. I would bet that there has been fewer murders nationwide in the past 5 years by the Klan, than there have been by blacks in Richmond county this year. One county, less than one full year. That is not being racist, it is called FACTS.

I think that if New Black Panthers can stand outside a polling place with a weapon of intimidation, a woman should be able to fly the Confederate Battle flag is she chooses. If she can't , then no Mexican flag should be allowed to flown anywhere in the US.

" I highly doubt you saw that same level of racism and as frequently in So Cal."

You are truly kidding, right? In a county that bordered Mexico? Ask Hispanic people in California about racism. Are you for real?

I have news for you, Libertarian Voter, WHITE people have called me that "lover" name- I am white- and I am not part of an interracial couple. However, I am intelligent enough to know that there are stupid racist people in all parts of the United States. When I have been called that, I smile sweetly and say, "Yes, I am. Because it's better than loving racist XXXXXXXX. Like you. " Which shuts them up.

What do I care what a racist thinks about me? Who does? Who cares when some ignorant fool, a total stranger, yells things at them? Why would I spend a minute of my life being upset about what some stranger thinks of me, and a crappy person, at that?

You have a lot to learn about the United States and racism.

But if you REALLY want to go to a racist place- go to Alaska. It's terrible there"

Sorry corgimom. I really meant white/black racism. I wasn't thinking about Hispanics when I made that post. I realize there are racists everywhere, but whites vs. blacks racism has to be most prevalent in the South.

I think your response to the ppl that called you the "lover" name was very good by the way. I hate racist losers.

“Hispanic” is not a race. Hispanic refers to national origin, particular those from the region formerly called “Hispañola.” There are black hispanics, white hispanics, native-american hispanics, and mixed-race hispanics.

Seems to me that American blacks are like British muslims any excuse to try and get a bit more of their own way, like spoiled brats.
The way i see it country's like America ,Canada , Australia and New Zealand were built on the blood sweat and tears of white Europeans and now the hard work is done they move in and want to take control, you fly your flag with pride Annie i am not an American but i love that flag and the Bonnie Blue flag and General Robert E Lee is my all time hero my wish is before i die that i will visit the Generals home his tomb and hopefully see what is left of the Stratford plantation .
Democracy ain't dead yet Annie but if American coloured people and British Muslims have their way it soon will be , one very gutsy lady.
