Black neighbors to picket SC woman's Confederate flag

Resident says it's a heritage display

  • Follow Metro

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. --- Annie Chambers Caddell, whose ancestors fought in the Civil War, insists the Confederate flag flying over her home is an important reminder of her heritage. For others in the historically black neighborhood, it's an unpleasant reminder of a bygone era they'd rather not see.

Annie Chambers Caddell stands outside her home in Summerville, S.C. The Confederate flag behind her has raised concern in her predominantly black neighborhood.

Caddell, who is white, moved into the Brownsville neighborhood in June and began flying the flag about a month later. Since then, more than 200 residents have signed a protest petition, and neighbors plan to march today along the street in front of Caddell's house.

"My first reaction was they are going to do what they think they need to do," said Caddell, 50. "My second reaction was I'm not going to be here."

Caddell plans to be on nearby James Island for the wedding of a black friend. She tearfully told the town council this week that she is not racist.

She also flies the American flag from her modest brick house, and her yard has various ornaments, including a gnome, Halloween and Thanksgiving decorations, and a "Confederate Boulevard" sign on her fence.

"That flag means a lot more to me than anything I can describe to you," Caddell said. "It's my heritage, and it's my right. I'm not trying to slam anybody, and I wish I wouldn't be slammed either."

James Patterson, a 43-year-old crane operator who lives in a mobile home next door, said displaying the flag is insensitive.

"I know she has a legal right to do that on her property. But just because it's legally right, doesn't make it morally right," said Patterson, who is black. "You can put up what you want, but if this was a Jewish community and someone moved in and started flying swastika flags, there would be a lot of hell raised about that as well."

Violet Saylor, 74, a retired social worker who lives about three blocks away, said the flag brings back memories of Jim Crow in the neighborhood that she has lived in all her life.

"She shouldn't fly that flag because it represents slavery and the Ku Klux Klan that used to ride through the town and we used to have to turn our lights off and hide behind the shades," Saylor said.

The town of Summerville has said that although Caddell has the right to fly the flag, neighbors also have the right to march.

Unless you are Black you

Unless you are Black you would not understand the offense. Why did she move into this area of town especially since she wants to fly her beloved flag? I have read alot of ignorance by some of you folks. I liked the comment that was made about junk cars sitting in the neighborhood. I grew up in the south and I am now 54 yrs old. I now live in Ohio and in a very small town. We are the only black family here. Our tires have been slashed, our children called names, my husband played professional sports but not allowed to coach any of these white children. Yet, junk cars??? None in our drive way, yet I look around town and yards not mowed, junk cars, and kids out of control. So to you who judge everyone by your own standards....you need to look again. This woman needs to remove that flag or move to a white neighborhood that will be willing to tolerate her nonsense.

You speak of their ignorance shstrong44 but you end with a comment stating the woman needs to move to a white neighborhood. I didn't know neighborhoods were color coded.

The Battle flag never flew

The Battle flag never flew over a slave ship. Those ships flew the American flag. Those ships were owned by Northerners. Guess she better take that American flag down too.

So...Sassygirl3914..Please

So...Sassygirl3914..Please define THEY and WE. I'm a black person and I believe the lady has the right to do what she want's too. While I dont know the whole history of the flag I know there are some valid point's on both sides. I think the problem is that the flag once meant something noble and dignified. But what you have to realize is that it's the nasty and evil things certain groups have done with it, that's what people are upset about. It's not "our" fault the Ku Klux Klan flew it when they've done the things they have. Or the guys that rode around my neighbor hood with it flying in the back of a pick-up truck while yelling at obscenities at the black kids walking home from school. So before you say they and we, look at "us" as a whole and realize that some of "your" own caused some of this....

"Why did she move into this area of town especially since she wants to fly her beloved flag?"

Shstrong, are you suggesting that white people should live in white neighborhoods, and blacks should live in black neighborhoods- you know, as in segregation?

Funny, you talk about how you are the only blacks living in a white neighborhood. So I'm asking you-why did you move into that area of town?

See how that works?

Wow, I grew up in Southern California, I'm white, and white kids used to yell obscenities to white kids that were walking home from school.

How about it's about immature high schoolers acting like immature high schoolers?

She has every right to fly

She has every right to fly whatever flag she chooses in her own yard. There are many things that people find offensive, and we just can't cater to them all. This is her right, just like it's the neighbor's right to protest it. Their protest won't make it go away, though.

A little twangy for my taste but I think it's where her misquote came from.

I'm not black, but as a graduate from Midland Valley HS, where we had rednecks galore (and they were self-proclaimed rednecks). You had rednecks that loved black people and then you had those that hated them and hated mixed couples. You wouldn't believe the bullying that happened to a mixed couple I know where they were calling her a "N**** lover." Those same people supported the KKK and even had relatives in the KKK. The Valley has been the place where I've seen the most rebel flags in the CSRA as well. You would think you jumped back to 1945, but it's just the way some parts of the South are. I highly doubt you saw that same level of racism and as frequently in So Cal.

So Libertarianvoter, I agree

So Libertarianvoter, I agree with you on some points. I know a lot of "rednecks" more than alot of black people I know. love em to death. Honestly I've always said that if the U.S. were invaded they would be some of the best people to be around. Very resourceful. As a matter of fact I have more white friends than I do black. Color has never been a thing with me. It actually leads to alot of interesting and enlightening conversations. But I would have to disagree that a black guy in Ga would see less racism than in southern california. But I do thank-you for actually making more sense to me than alot of the other people on here. Like i said, I can care less what the lady does. I dont think a protest is necessary. I think what some of the people are doing is going directly against what they fought for in the 50's etc. Equality, free-speech and to be free from oppression and to live in peace with your opinions. To voice you're opinion is one thing. But don't let a flag define the lady. Get to know her. Then make a decision. And with that, im done commenting. Good day to you all.

If anyone has a complaint

If anyone has a complaint about flags flying it's the Native Americans
they also were killed moved off their lands and mistreated. So all you African Americans you'll have to take a number when it comes
to be offended.
And while we are on the subject...I've had these Africa-American flags
for so so long and you know I haven't sold the first one... Not much
Pride in the Heritage thing I guess.

usafvet says that this

usafvet says that this woman's yard is "probably the cleanest" in the neighborhood. He based this solely on the information that she is the only white person in the neighborhood. Pretty strong evidence of usafvet's bias. Get a job, usafvet, you are like so many welfare queens with their ridiculous lifetime government pension for non-combat military service. What a cushy life they have at the taxpayer's expense. Take your obvious racism somewhere else, usafvet, get your government entitlement check in some other town, maybe an all-white town. But then if it's all-white, you won't be able to predict who has the cleanest yard, right?

shstrong44: "Unless you are Black you would not understand the offense. Why did she move into this area of town especially since she wants to fly her beloved flag? I have read alot of ignorance by some of you folks." How do you know she moved into the area? Maybe that was her family home before any other group moved in. Besides, you cannot dictate who moves next door to you or to whom you sell your home to--it's illegal. I would think that in today's age, you would learn to exercise some tolerance yourself; stagnant attitudes do not promote growth or furtherance of knowledge, it does promote ignorance. As to who suffered what indignities of prejudicial thinking and bigoted acts by others, I can attest to the fact that others, even those within the 'majority', have suffered just as much. Therefore, no particular group of people has a premium on the prejudicial behaviors we all know exists. And one other thing: the phrase "you people," or "you folks" is just as offensive to me and many others as black people find it to be. In the future, please refrain from using this derogatory phrase so as not to offend the sensitivities of another person.

With respect to the KKK and

With respect to the KKK and the Confederate Flag. The KKK formed in the North (Indiana/Illinois area) and moved to the South during the Reconstruction Era. These KKK members were among the scalawags that came down South to "take over." And they did, at the expense of the Southerners who maintained their homes after the Civil War. So as not to tarnish the great North, the KKK adopted the Confederate Flag to promote their unbiased hatred of the former slaves. There was extreme prejudice in the North prior to the Civil War, during the Civil War, and continues to exist today.

Sorry Mable8; but I think one

Sorry Mable8; but I think one of our Confederate Generals and some Rebel solders along with others formed the KKK in the SOUTH after the Civil War when they all suffered under the Northern troop occupation/Re-Construction run by freed slaves, carpet baggers and other blacks appointed by the Northern politicians. The Klan help stem persecutions and injustices against whites and some blacks that was very rampant after the war, however as history notes, all too soon the KKK was overtaken by those who had or developed racial hatred against the black government fronted by the Feds and thus many blacks. The Klan today, no matter how much they say or may have changed are stuck, right or wrong, with baggage too heavy to carry.

Mable8, thanks for the 1:25pm

Mable8, thanks for the 1:25pm comment, but General Nathan Bedford Forrest, CSA, founded the KKK, but not with the modern day version of it in mind. People don't generally know that information. But in reality, most of the badness that has happened to the South has come at the hands of the North.

People, especially African-American people, also don't understand that slavery, while an important factor in the War of Northern Aggression, slavery was not the cause of that unpleasantness but rather a pivotal ancillary component of it. The cause, initially, was the attempted destruction of the economy of the South by northern legislators, mainly regarding trade tariffs.

Most people don't even realize that Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation--something all American do or should agree was absolutely right to do-- more as a political maneuver for his election campaign than because he personally felt strongly about abolishing slavery.

All that information hasn't been included government school textbooks over the past 50+ years, not even in the South itself. But it was well-understood by people of my parents' and grandparents' generations.

African Americans should not be expected to look back on the history of their ancestors' enslavement with undiluted pleasure. However, African Americans also should remember who actually is to blame for that slavery. Northern textile industrialists wanted a cheap, endless supply of cotton and hemp, and it was mainly them, along with British enterprising capitalists, who brought slaves to the United States.

It also should be remembered that the Confederacy was a sovereign nation with the fourth largest economy in the world at that time, and slavery was not only reason for that, not by a long shot. Despite what so many people have been led to believe and what some would try to have everyone accept as fact today, the South was not and never will be all and only about one racial minority.

It is the height of presumption that any one group claim the Confederate flag as the symbol of anything so small as racism. What social narcissism that is.

As long as there are Southerners, the Confederate flag will command honor and respect.

"Hey Corgimom, Did they fly a

"Hey Corgimom, Did they fly a Confederate Flag while they were doing it? And besides, I never said they were high schoolers...."

There are some people that never grow up.

Despite what you might think, shstrong, the only people who care about the Confederate flag are Southerners and blacks. There are millions of people in the US that don't give a flip about the Confederate flag. If you have a Confederate flag in California, people think "so what?" Nobody pays it any attention.

And, just for the record, ssstrong, I don't believe your story for one minute. Because if that is happening to you, call the FBI. They love civil rights violations like that.

We'll be waiting for the update.

*****************************

But this is the most stunning part, from libertarian voter-

" I highly doubt you saw that same level of racism and as frequently in So Cal."

You are truly kidding, right? In a county that bordered Mexico? Ask Hispanic people in California about racism. Are you for real?

I have news for you, Libertarian Voter, WHITE people have called me that "lover" name- I am white- and I am not part of an interracial couple. However, I am intelligent enough to know that there are stupid racist people in all parts of the United States. When I have been called that, I smile sweetly and say, "Yes, I am. Because it's better than loving racist XXXXXXXX. Like you. " Which shuts them up.

What do I care what a racist thinks about me? Who does? Who cares when some ignorant fool, a total stranger, yells things at them? Why would I spend a minute of my life being upset about what some stranger thinks of me, and a crappy person, at that?

You have a lot to learn about the United States and racism.

But if you REALLY want to go to a racist place- go to Alaska. It's terrible there, between the Natives and the whites. It makes the South look like a fairy tale.

I am a white person and have

I am a white person and have lived in the south all of my life. I am also a Christian and would never fly a Confederate Flag. Here's why: In Romans 14:13 Paul says, "Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother's way." I think a "stumbling block" can be many things including displaying an object that represents so much pain, suffering, and humiliation to my black brothers and sisters in Christ. Regardless of what I think about the Confederate Flag, it clearly is a reminder of a grave injustice to many black people and Satan has used it to sew seeds of hate in the hearts of blacks and whites in order to keep us divided because he knows that as long as we are divided we will never be as strong as we would if we were united. I posted this not to pass judgement on those who have said she can/should fly the flag because clearly she has the right to do so. I only hope maybe this perspective will make my white Christian brothers and sisters stop and see how this could be a stumbling block to others.

African tribes are who

African tribes are who STARTED selling African slaves to the entire world, not just America. They would raid competing villages, kill the men and rape the women until someone offered them more than a banana for a guy they were going to kill anyway. POOF an industry was born. Today the largest slave traders in the world are also the ones who sold the slavers all the African slaves first. AFRICANS.

Africans should be very happy they were sold. Half of my family on both sides were American Indians. They just killed us off. When are we all going to realize that was then, this is now? I just helped one of the coolest African American guys I’ve ever met start a new biz. Some of my best men in the guard were Black. I think the whole thing is silly. We should drive on and never look back.

All of U.S. should be able to fly anything we want on our private property that’s why we buy it. Leave the lady alone. Those who yell DIVERSITY the loudest are those who will not allow anyone else their “diversity” except theirs. It’s her way of exercising her right to free speech. We should all be glad we all have that right.

And as the Wise Walrus alluded, we have MUCH bigger fish to fry and we better get about doing it. Me, I’m going to Sunday school to pray for America She's REALY going to need it. I don't think you guys realize what is about to happen...
