THOMSON --- Two truck drivers were injured and Interstate 20 traffic was snarled for hours Thursday after a wreck just before the morning commute.

The drivers were identified as Jimmy Cody, of Thomson, and Samuel Hack, of Carrollton, Ga., according to Georgia State Trooper Ben Rollins.

Cody was the driver of a truck belonging to C&H Paving Co., of Thomson, while Hack was the driver of a tractor-trailer rig.

The accident happened about 6:30 a.m. near Thomson, between exits 172 and 175, and both eastbound lanes of the interstate were shut down as Hazmat workers with the Georgia Department of Transportation cleaned up more than 200 gallons of spilled fuel.

Rollins said the wreck happened when Cody went to merge into traffic and his vehicle was struck from behind by Hack's rig.

Both drivers were treated at the scene by McDuffie County first responders before being flown by helicopter to Medical College of Georgia Hospital in Augusta.

The interstate was reopened later Thursday afternoon.
