Why do Augusta planners not think about location? After seeing the outstanding government center in North Augusta, what a disappointment when I saw the new Augusta judicial building. Citizens of Augusta, please take a look at where your taxpayer money was used and, like me, say, "Why?"
This is a rave for all those people going green by driving without their air conditioners, but please turn your indicators off after you change lanes.
To the person who asked how we won World War II in four years and can't beat the Taliban now in nine: Then we were at war with a country and its leaders. Now the enemy is like fire ants, hiding under the ground, pretending to be part of a culture and blending in with the common people while hiding their weapons under their clothing. They come out only to blow themselves up into crowds of people who have their own religion. You let them be, and they multiply just like the ants do.
Another senseless death occurred last week. When are people going to act responsibly and wear seat belts each and every time they get behind the wheel? Enough is enough.
A man was robbed and beaten by thugs who "opened his unlocked (car) door," thus getting at the victim. Do not leave your car doors unlocked unless you're getting in or out.
Gubernatorial candidate Nathan Deal was asked where he stands on abortion. Rather than give a clear answer, Deal said: "The vast majority of people in Georgia ... are ... pro-life." That's not an answer. Why did Deal go to such trouble to avoid saying what he thinks of abortion?
It is a sad day for America when a Democratic federal judge decides that illegal immigrants have more rights than citizens do to protect themselves. No wonder the Mexican president, as well as the ACLU, loves this decision. November can't get here fast enough.
It was sad seeing pictures of the Miller Theatre in such rundown condition. My question is: Why spend $6 million on a facility that does not have ample parking for those attending events? If you are spending that much, why not a new theater? People don't want to have to hunt for a parking place and then maybe walk several blocks to attend an event.
It is extremely important that the baseball stadium be moved to the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame property. Not only is it a smart move, but it will be beneficial to all of the CSRA. Common sense will tell you that moving from an offbeat location to an extremely active location is nothing but a big plus.
Tell us what you think
"Common sense will tell you that moving from an offbeat location to an extremely active location is nothing but a big plus."
Now, here's what I'm wondering.
There have been sports teams downtown- arena football and hockey, just to mention two- and they folded due to lack of attendance.
So people will flock to downtown to a stadium, but they wouldn't go downtown to the JB Arena- just a few blocks away?
I think the logical thing to do is see what the yearly attendance is by month, now that the team has been here for a few years, and compute if this will be feasible to sustain in downtown Augusta. I think you would have to show some substantial profit at this point in your baseball franchise to justify moving from one location to another unless someone else is paying for the move on a gamble that "new stuff downtown" is going to sell.
Augusta does not own the Greenjackets, Ripken Baseball does. It's not the city's concern how many attend. Obviously Cal's research team thinks attendance will be sufficient to give them the revenue to repay the LOAN from the county.
Move the stadium from an offbeat location to a thriving one? What a joke!! First, downtown Augusta is anything but thriving. 99% of those attending will have to drive further, passing the current stadium to get to the new location if one were built there. At the very least, fill up the entire stadium each and every game to prove a larger one is needed, which certainly isn't at this time. We have a good stadium, a good team, etc. and if they need a new stadium and it can be supported by entrance fees, etc. then private money is more than welcom to build it. We have many more important issues in this community than spending one penny of tax money, even tourism tax money, on a new stadium. And, exactly how is this extremely important anyway when we are furloughing our teachers, fire fighters, police officers, etc. when Public Safety and Education should always be the TOP PRIORITIES of our government. 9-1-1 in Richmond County has a mere 15 phone lines to answer calls, is ofter understaffed and underfunded. Our Sheriff's Office does not have near enough deputies to do the job, the salaries are deplorable, even compared to other similar agencies in Georgia, one of the lowest paying states to begin with. We have many other public safety concerns and our school system can't even graduate 50% of their students. This city needs a lot of cleaning up in many areas from crime to criminals to the housing projects to most all of our streets, etc....a new baseball stadium is anything but extremely important.
Maybe an underperforming Sheriff's dept. could apply to barry and his goons for a million or so dollars to "turn it around".......and if the greenjackets do not do well this season WELL then just apply for an under achievers reward from the Gov. and get your stadium....
Morning T...looks everyone is having a bit of a sleep in.................good weather for it.
I have often wondered why planners won't pick better locations. New buildings go up, but most are hidden from view. You have to look for them to find them.
Okay, more coffee is needed this morning.
Something is eating my tomatoes.....on the vine...b4 I can get one.
Always lock your car doors.....had some punks try to get in my car on Greene St. years ago while stopped for the train......too bad I didn't have a 38 to show them.
Wear your seatbelt....could save your life one day.
Good am CSRA.......hello to the big town of Perkins Ga.-Appling-Evans-Harlem-Grovetown-Swainsboro-Martinez-Waynesboro

Ranter #3......In WWII, we didn't have these bleeding heart liberal congressmen telling our brave men and women, they can't shoot the enemy unless the enemy shoots first.
RK probably in TN now between Knoxville and Nashville on their way to Laredo, TX. (he has already got his lunch money ready for Pedro's Roach Coach mobile Mexican restaurant)
tumble did ya go to that mexican bar near furys ferry last night?
tumbleweed - I don't get it, what does knowing how to sing have to do with good karaoke? LOL
tumbleweed - I did ask him specifically if he had actual cash in his pocket. He is still crabbing about only being able to get a cheeseburger from the company cafe with the $4 he had in "real money" the last time he was there.
They get down to that freight terminal pretty frequently, it's a major drop off/swap location where they move freight from US trucks to Mexican trucks to cross the border. I'd tell you that they normally drop off raw materials and parts there and depart with finished products, but somebody would lose her mind. ;-)
The Kook-Aid is wearing off apparently:
Forty-four percent (44%) of U.S. voters still expect their taxes to increase under President Obama, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.
Just nine percent (9%) think their taxes will go down, and 39% expect them to stay the same.
The 2010 graduation rate in RC is 76%(four points below 80%).. Even the lowest performing high school in RC(Laney) graduated 58-60% of their students in 2009 and probably 64% in 2010......
The city already voted unanimously to slash two of it's furlough days....

Rant #1....The Judicial center's location was chosen in order to revatilize a vacant area of downtown.. 9th street/James Brown Boulevard is one of the main targets for revatilization.... The Hyatt Place, Tee Center, parking deck, and the 3 story office building are located near Reynolds street... The library and Judicial center were built in the middle of 9th street. The new Laney Walker developments are mostly located near Walton Way and Laney Walker Boulevard....
You don't come here for the hunting, do you?
#9.... I have to agree 100%, The Reynolds street corridor has plenty of new construction going on and planned. (Within a 2-3 mile radius of the GGHF property their is a $112 million dental school, $30 million Hyatt hotel, $3 million Emporium Condos, $30 million Saint Sebastian, $100 million Kroc Center, $70 million Judicial Center, $40 million TEE center, $37.5 million Laney Walker,$25 million library, $10 million parking deck, $5-10 million Holiday Inn Express, etc).. The current stadium doesn't have hotels, office space, retail, restaurants, and green space surrounding it, nor does it have the developer of Atlantic Station(Jim Jacoby) behind it....
The GreenJackets set a single season attendance record in 2007 and 2008. They missed the 2008 attendance recod in 2009 by only about 2k people.... In 2010 their expected to cross over 200k fans for the entire year...
http://www2.wjbf.com/sports/2008/aug/15/-jbf_2008_08_15_0008-ar-235940
The Greenjackets were currently 6th(May 2010) in attendance/game for the SAL league, while playing in the 3rd smallest stadium (14 total).
It would be nice if visitors coming into the city come get a better view. The scenic view from 13th St bridge will be good, but what about other corridors. And 9th St?
Let's see. US 25 north into RC, Trashed! Hwy 56 north into RC Trashed,
Sand Bar Ferry/ Laney Walker into RC Trashed, US 1 into RC, Trashed, Wrightsboro Rd into RC Trashed, Gordon Hwy into RC, Trashed. Yep that's exactly what I want to see when I enter a town and consider options on a residence! Downtown is not safe after Dark.
My thoughts exactly Coldbeer.....what would it take for the gov. leaders to invest a little in the areas you just mentioned....it is an eyesore....these roads are major highways into the "great" downtown countyman talks about all the time.
Take the rose-colored glasses off countyman.
We must realize, there are too many democrats is Augusta for it to prosper. Reparations may be dumbobama's second most important issue, but it is also being practiced in Richmond County. They take money from the areas of those who pay taxes and pump it into those blighted areas where the non taxpayers reside. Nothing will survive downtown as long as Republicans can't patronize those establishments for fear of purse snatching, robbing, and even murdering being a strong possibility. As for the previous statement about dumbobama, he is also using reparations as a main ingredient to accomplish his first goal, and that is to destroy America. Down with dumbobama, and GOD BLESS AMERICA, OUR TROOPS, AND OUR VETERANS.
''Downtown isn't safe after dark''... I live downtown and see people walking around after dark all the time....
Over 40k people showed up for the fireworks downtown and the monthly First Friday averages 10k..... First Friday during the summer months is much larger....
Riverwatch pkwy and Washington road head into downtown.....
Countyman, Face it most people use express routes to leave RC.
Oh yeah, I-520 to the VA medical center on Wrightsboro Rd is certainly an eye-pleasing (and suspension-breaking) drive. That little noise you just heard was not your imagination, it was the last of your credibility self immolating.
Where did I say Augusta downtown was ''great''.... People on here love to constantly put words into my mouth.....
I've always said Augusta's downtown is better than previous years, but far from being a ''great'' downtown as of yet.....
Wrightsboro rd in RC looks far ''better'' than the Wrightsboro rd in Columbia County.. The Gordon Hwy in Columbia County isn't more pleasing than Gordon Hwy in RC either..
I think most people use I-20, I-520, Riverwatch pkwy and Washington road to leave RC...
