Hospital moves husband accused in wife's death

  • Follow Metro

Dr. Henry Bailey, the retired surgeon accused of suffocating his wife to ease her suffering from dementia, has been moved to a psychiatric ward, Richmond County sheriff's Capt. Scott Peebles confirmed Tuesday.

Peebles would not name the hospital where Bailey, 84, is being treated but said that Bailey has not been released into police custody.

Bailey faces a murder charge. Investigators say he killed his wife, Gene, 84, then tried to commit suicide at their west Augusta home on July 15.

what a sad story that was. He thought in his mind he was doing the right thing. But only God can do his job. No one has that right to take someones life but him..If you want to kill yourself feel free to but, please lets leave the innocent people alone

He'll get probation. No purpose would be served by incarceration.

This is probably one of the sadest stories ever. My prayers are with this man and his family. Some cases just aren't cut and dry.

While this is very sad and our prayers go out to all involved, when you place a plastic bag over someones face and causes their death, it is "cut and dry"......murder.

Dr. and Mrs. Bailey were born on the same day at the old University Hospital. They were in the hospital nursery together, grew up together in Augusta, married, had two children, and were/are exemplary citizens. Dr. Bailey worked long, hard hours doing surgery to SAVE peoples'lives. They were being taken care of ,together, in their home, not a nursing home, by loving family, friends and trusted caretakers. I know for a fact that if Dr. Bailey could have seen any other way to end the suffering of the love of his life, he would have. He obviously meant for them to die on the same day, together, just as they were born. If he is tried for murder it will be a travesty of the judicial system. He deserves compassion now, just as he was trying to show compassion for Mrs. Bailey. I only wish, as sad as it would have been, that for their sakes he had succeeded and that they could have ended their lives together.
