Airmen, F-16s head to Nevada for training

SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. --- About 100 airmen and nearly 20 fighter jets from South Carolina's Shaw Air Force Base are heading to Nevada for two weeks of training with counterparts from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Singapore.

Air Force spokeswoman Airman 1st Class Alexandria Mosness says the men and women left for Nellis Air Force Base on Wednesday. The F-16s from the 77th Fighter Squadron are set to depart Friday.

Power plant missed chances to fix issues

GREENVILLE, S.C. --- Nuclear power plant officials in South Carolina admit they missed opportunities to discover issues that led to blockages in the plant's emergency water lines.

The Greenville News reports that Oconee Nuclear Station officials told the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Atlanta on Tuesday the missed observations shouldn't lead to more oversight.

One of Oconee's reactors lost power and cooling for two seconds during a scheduled maintenance outage in April 2008.

Oktoberfest returns to Myrtle Beach this year

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. --- Oktoberfest will return to a South Carolina beach town to attract visitors to the beach in the autumn.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports oceanfront merchants have received a permit for the Oct. 9 event. Last year the celebration attracted about 10,000 people.

Organizers want to bring in a German oompah band and set up a one-day sports bar in the center of Ocean Boulevard.

Gator found in surf at Hilton Head Island

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. --- It wasn't your usual tourist in the surf off a South Carolina resort island.

This surfer was a 9-foot gator.

Two workers for Critter Management Inc. caught the alligator after crews on personal watercraft forced the creature closer to shore so it could be snared and removed from the beach.

Officials say a gator turns up on the beach about once a month during the summer.
