Latonya Holmes (center) is helped by family members before the ceremony. Her husband was killed June 26 in Afghanistan.

He was killed June 26 by an improvised explosive device in the Sayed Abad district on a route clearance mission.

Of the 1,057 American service members killed in and around Afghanistan since the start of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001, Holmes is the closest loss to the Augusta area.

He spent the past four years living in Washington County, just south of Sandersville, in Tennille, with his wife and four children.

As a Patriot Guard Rider

As a Patriot Guard Rider (PGR) I attend funerals by providing an escort (and sometimes protection) for our fallen heroes, past and present and their families.
I am hoping that 'Speeding' comment that he/she was trying to say was: 'How many more men and women are going to have to die before this war is over? How many more funerals are we going to have to hear about?'
I would love to never have to attend another "KIA" funeral again!
May God Bless you, Sgt David Holmes and your family and friends.
And THANK YOU Sgt David Holmes for your ultimate sacrifice in order for our country to remain free!!!

Mansions of the Lord
-Randall Wallace

To fallen soldiers let us sing
Where no rockets fly nor bullets wing
Our broken brothers let us bring
To the mansions of the Lord

No more bleeding no more fight
No prayers pleading through the night
Just divine embrace, eternal light
In the mansions of the Lord

Where no mothers cry and no children weep
We will stand and guard to the angels sleep
All through the ages safely keep
The mansions of the Lord

SGT Holmes, Godspeed to you. You have honored us all. May God bless you and pour out His consolation and all the riches of His never-ending love and mercy upon your family for your sacrifice.

And may your sacrifice inspire all of us to live lives that are worthy of your example.

I served with Sgt Holmes

I served with Sgt Holmes during is tour in the Navy. I also got to know him as a friend. More then just a service member, Sgt Holmes was creative, artistic, and a family man. He never complained about our duties, During down time he spoke lovingly of his family.
I and our Navy Unit are proud and honored to have served side by side with Sgt Holmes. My thoughts and prayers are with your family and friends. May God Bless you, your family, and our country.
