X-Mart reopens on Gordon Highway

  • Follow Metro

The x-rated video store that cost the city of Augusta a $550,000 settlement and $137,000 to fight in court is now open.

The X-Mart on Gordon Highway opened its doors Saturday but won't be open 24 hours until the store is fully staffed, X-Mart attorney Gary Edinger said.

"They need about eight employees to do 'round the clock, and have about two shifts full at this point," Edinger said.

The retail store has been fortunate to be able to pick and choose from a large pool of applicants, some of whom had previous adult retail experience, he said.

The store has been closed since 2003, while Augusta and X-Mart owner Augusta Video have been fighting a protracted legal battle.

Since agreeing to the settlement May 18, Augusta has paid the full amount and expedited the issue of licenses the store needed to open, Edinger said.

well, I am glad that all the

well, I am glad that all the court fighting is over. Now I would like for all of us who are against it to go down there and take pictures of every customer that walks in the door and post it online. For all those people who happy to have the rights to have this store should not mind supporting it with their picture. You see if a politician or any other person is caught on tape going in there many people would want them to resign from their jobs. Why? Because we have a double standard in this world. On one side we say that porn has a right to be distributed and on the other hand we punish people caught using it. So how bout people? Get your cameras ready and lets go do a little publicity for X-Mart! LOL

how exactly is your remark even remotely relevant "big"sarge? you're obviously unaware that X-Mart will likely cater to the homosexual community as well.. you really think only heterosexual people choose to view adult videos?

The funniest thing about the

The funniest thing about the whole thing is that the people that made the biggest fuss about that business isn't in office now. We paid for their unnecessary fight against that business. As a tax payer in which my taxes has increased for wasted and poorly run government decisions, it will be worth the trip to see what some of my money paid for. I care less about that type of business and I couldn't understand why city government would spend that kind of time and money to have it closed. It was a fight that they couldn't win in the beginning because they didn't have the right legal team in place to fight that kind of fight. Yes, they were over paid but not confident enough to win that legal issue for the tax payers. We all lost from their bad judgment as governing of the city. We have to elect better people to serve so that we don't have to continue to pay for their inability to lead the city forward instead of making a free payday for somebody or some business when they file suit against the city.

"The x-rated video store that cost the city of Augusta a $550,000 settlement and $137,000 to fight in court is now open."
What a goofy opening statement! Wasn't it the city's effort to rewrite laws attacking one particular business that cost all of the money? The courts seem to think so.

I really don't care about the store opening. If people don't like it don't go. However I am not happy with paying this man over half a million dollars in settlement money. This city has got to do better. The tax payers money could be used in better ways than this. How about The Regency Mall...now that is really obscene.

This is a $700,000 example of

This is a $700,000 example of what happens when people put their religious and personal agendas above that of the LAW OF AMERICA.

It is so sad that some people wish this place would burn down or that others want to picket or take pictures of the store's patrons. Get a grip people. Nobody pickets or harrasses your churches just because they, for some reason, don't have to pay the same taxes as every other property owner.
