Comments from our readers:

U.S. TROOPS in Afghanistan could soon be awarded a medal for not doing something, a precedent-setting award that would be given for "courageous restraint" for "holding fire to save civilian lives." In Afghanistan, a civilian-looking person, even a woman or child, has a good chance of being an armed enemy.

THE COLUMBIA COUNTY Board of Education and Superintendent Charles Nagle want to cut teachers, some sports (because they aren't learning oriented), Spanish, etc., to save money. If you would simply go without a raise, Mr. Nagle, and cut one of your many, many associate or deputy or assistant superintendents, that alone would save hundreds of thousands of dollars.

SAW THE ARTICLE on restraint and seclusion in schools. I am very glad to see the state of Georgia finally doing something about the overuse and abuse of restraint and seclusion in schools. Regulations are long overdue, and schools for too long have played loose and fast in this regard. Maybe if this rule is in place it will deter the abuse and overuse of restraint and seclusion in schools. It will also force the schools to adequately train workers who are working with special needs children.

AUGUSTA, SOME OF your public schools are complete wastes of time and money. I know. I work in one. The kids come to be entertained. They disrespect and provoke teachers. Why? Because they can. They know that little or nothing will happen to them. For instance, a child is fighting and is handcuffed in the morning and back in class an hour later. Because being tough is good, being the toughest is the best. Compliance with rules is viewed as weakness. There are no consistent consequences to actions. Generally speaking, we teachers work to educate while the students actively work against us for their own aspirations of popularity and acceptance.

NORTH AUGUSTA is always worried about repairing the Greeneway while West Avenue has enough holes and rough sections to tear a vehicle apart.

I AM ALL FOR the very worthy cause the Columbia County fire department is raising money for. However, I have serious issues with them standing in the middle of the entrance and exit to Mullins Crossing and interrupting the flow of traffic. They might get more donations standing next to the stores instead of irritating people by backing up traffic.

President Barack Obama's

President Barack Obama's Kenyan aunt has been allowed to stay in the United States although immigration judges ordered her to leave the country in 2003 and 2004. Instead, she continued living in a Boston public housing project at the expense of legal residents and taxpayers. Due to her health now and other issues, she will not have to leave the US. I don't care if you are liberal or conservative if you aren't able to see what is wrong with this picture in so many areas you head is completely burried in the sand. Illegal Imigrants are not paying taxes, using our services from schools to hospitals to public housing, etc. and our government (Republicans and Democrats) aren't doing anything drastic to change it such as securing our borders, deporting all illegal imigrants who have other criminal charges against them as well, etc. For those working and crime free, figure out what to do that is fair such as long term work visas or something but any who are not a positive contributing member of our nation and crime free as well need to go. It is also pathetic when rich families allow the government (people who pay taxes) to take care of their family members in government housing and our President is a prime example.

The last thing the BOE or

The last thing the BOE or Superintendent wants to do is cut money from their budget but they are making the tough and necessary decisions that must be made. The CCBOE Administrative salaries are far better than most districts in comparison and so are then number of employees in the BOE offices. Could they do better, of course so but is there waste in the budget, teachers that do little to nothing, etc. - of course there area. If kids want to play sports, their parents will find the money or they can play rec league and if they need to learn spanish in elementary school since we live in English speaking America then they can get private education. Nagle and the BOE of CC are doing a great job in tough times.

As for the idiotic liberal "courageous restraint medal" for thinking twice before firing to ensure civilians aren't hurt...Lets just be glad our soldiers aren't doing their jobs to win medals or we would have a lot more dead soldiers on our hands due to this one.

w00t!

A note about today's avatar. It's an unmodified picture of an actual sign that Doc encountered on his journeys though the hood. The sign can be viewed in person in the lot of a business at MLK and 15th St (near Cherry Tree Crossing). At least somebody is trying....

Richmond County is not

Richmond County is not stalled by economy. It is a classic example of a ghetto. Nothing will change in this poverty stricken, crime ridden town until unionized labor exists. The workers need a voice.

Although there must be many

Although there must be many towns whose age is beyond the country's, they are still a minority compared to the number of total towns...often when a city has begun to age it's occupants of the new generations want to change it and the ones who remain from the older generations want it to be left alone...it's called progress...nothing gets done forward here that two or more steps backward are not required to balance the swing of the pendulum as regards the two opposing groups...also, when economies are hard hit the populace typically blames government when in actuality it is the people who need to take charge and get something done..don't depend on laws and courts to give you guidance cuz they will always fall on conservative sides of issues to avoid political blame...it's like the living constitution that is interpreted by the SC..it changes w the society it governs...if we become lazy it has to act strictly until the majority of the justices have become like the society it governs and the society agrees w their decision..RoevWade would not have passed today, but it did when it did because society dictated it to the lawmakers and the lawmakers were open to the adaptation of the laws...it's why there is no prayer in schools, illegal search and seizures have been suspended in the name of the National Security, our phones are tapped w/o legal permit, our military are forced to fight a non-war in the name of PC...and the media have been totally manipulated by the gov't to spin their agendas...all because society demanded the change when they saw fit to challenge the way the law applied to their case specifically...the gov't is of the people and by the people...we elect and support everyone in office until we don't like their decisions on our behalf..then we realize our mistake in putting them there and we blame them...it's our fault they got there and did that...live w your decisions or think intelligently before making one and the results will likely be favorable.
