U.S. TROOPS in Afghanistan could soon be awarded a medal for not doing something, a precedent-setting award that would be given for "courageous restraint" for "holding fire to save civilian lives." In Afghanistan, a civilian-looking person, even a woman or child, has a good chance of being an armed enemy.

THE COLUMBIA COUNTY Board of Education and Superintendent Charles Nagle want to cut teachers, some sports (because they aren't learning oriented), Spanish, etc., to save money. If you would simply go without a raise, Mr. Nagle, and cut one of your many, many associate or deputy or assistant superintendents, that alone would save hundreds of thousands of dollars.

SAW THE ARTICLE on restraint and seclusion in schools. I am very glad to see the state of Georgia finally doing something about the overuse and abuse of restraint and seclusion in schools. Regulations are long overdue, and schools for too long have played loose and fast in this regard. Maybe if this rule is in place it will deter the abuse and overuse of restraint and seclusion in schools. It will also force the schools to adequately train workers who are working with special needs children.

AUGUSTA, SOME OF your public schools are complete wastes of time and money. I know. I work in one. The kids come to be entertained. They disrespect and provoke teachers. Why? Because they can. They know that little or nothing will happen to them. For instance, a child is fighting and is handcuffed in the morning and back in class an hour later. Because being tough is good, being the toughest is the best. Compliance with rules is viewed as weakness. There are no consistent consequences to actions. Generally speaking, we teachers work to educate while the students actively work against us for their own aspirations of popularity and acceptance.

NORTH AUGUSTA is always worried about repairing the Greeneway while West Avenue has enough holes and rough sections to tear a vehicle apart.

I AM ALL FOR the very worthy cause the Columbia County fire department is raising money for. However, I have serious issues with them standing in the middle of the entrance and exit to Mullins Crossing and interrupting the flow of traffic. They might get more donations standing next to the stores instead of irritating people by backing up traffic.
