ATLANTA --- Georgia has joined a lawsuit challenging a new federal health law.
Gov. Sonny Perdue said Friday that an amended complaint was filed Friday that added Georgia to the 19 other states suing to find the law unconstitutional. He said the new health care law "will exact a huge cost on our state and curtail our economic growth."
Georgia is being represented by Frank C. Jones as special attorney general after Attorney General Thurbert Baker refused to sue on behalf of the state. Baker said the state lacked a viable legal claim.
The lawsuit was originally filed in federal court in the Northern District of Florida on March 23 after President Obama signed the measure into law.
Illegal immigrant in college freed on bond
ATLANTA --- An illegal immigrant college student who turned herself in to a suburban Atlanta sheriff who took out a warrant for her arrest is free on bond.
Jessica Colotl told reporters Friday that she plans to continue her education and hopes her case will help bring about immigration reform.
Colotl, a native of Mexico, was arrested about six weeks ago for driving without a license and was turned over to immigration authorities. The 21-year-old was released from immigration detention last week and given a yearlong deferral on her case.
Cobb County Sheriff Neil Warren on Wednesday obtained a new warrant for her arrest, saying she lied about her address when she was booked into jail after her initial arrest.
Woman faces charges after unborn baby dies
DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. --- A 21-year-woman who police say led officers on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash that killed her unborn child will face feticide charges.
Jessica Bruce remains at Grady Memorial Hospital. She had an emergency C-section Wednesday night after being cut out of her wrecked Pontiac.
Douglas County Coroner Randy Daniel says an autopsy showed the child died from crash injuries. Bruce was about six to seven months pregnant.
Police say the chase began on Interstate 20 in Douglasville when an officer clocked Bruce doing 86 mph. She got off the freeway and continued to speed. Police say she finally hit a car and another car struck hers.
