Rants & Raves

Comments from our readers:

I hope the pilot who flew over the Augusta National golf course flying the banner during the tournament will make this an annual event.

This is a rant for Diamond Lakes Elementary School. I think it's a shame how a teacher can grab a child by the back of his neck and drag him to the office. Then the child has to hit the teacher to get the teacher off him. It's wrong for the child to hit the teacher, but don't you think it's wrong for the teacher to grab a small child and try to take him to the office? Isn't that the job of the parent? It's the job of the teacher to instruct the child, not put his hands on him.

I like the job the Richmond County sheriff's department is doing, but I would really like to see deputies in my neighborhood more often. Please come to Spanish Trace off Tobacco Road. Let's get rid of the drugs. There's a bunch of drugs being sold there.

This is a RANT to The Augusta Chronicle for taking out the comic strip Overboard. This is enough to make me cancel my subscription to the newspaper. Please bring back Overboard!

The Pepperidge gangs are just the tip of the iceberg. We've had major gang activity here in the neighborhoods off Meadowbrook Drive for years now, but it keeps getting ignored by authorities.

A question from a Pennsylvanian: Do cars that are sold in Augusta not have turn signals?

This is both a rant and a rave for the ASU students whose picture was in the Thursday paper making T-shirts for the Take Back the Night rally. Their hard work, time and effort to participate in this event is commendable. But if you are going to protest sexual violence, you should consider dressing a little more modestly. Two of the girls were exposed above the waist, while the other flaunted a rear end decorated with what appeared to be tattoos. I personally do not feel that flaunting your bodies while protesting sexual violence gets across the message you intended.

This is a rave and a high five to the folks at the James Brown Arena and Bell Auditorium. I am well past my concert days, but I do like seeing that this venue is coming back into play locally. Maybe some of this proactive environment could rub off on the city fathers in other ways than free tickets.

People, the parking lot of the Lowe's on Knox Avenue in North Augusta is not a highway or roadway. It is a parking lot. If you are passing through that area to get from Martintown Road to Knox Avenue, or vice versa, you are violating the law. North Augusta Public Safety needs to have this checked out. After all, the parking lot is under police jurisdiction.

Keystone Driver: Augusta cars

Keystone Driver: Augusta cars do have turn signals, but they're not used. I did when I first moved here, but the local police --ignorant of their use-- kept stopping me to tell me I had a short in my lights, or to threaten to ticket me for impersonating an emergency vehicle because of the flashing red and yellow lights. One thing is certain: No one in Augusta has ever gotten carpal tunnel from using them.

Rant #2- "but don't you think it's wrong for the teacher to grab a small child and try to take him to the office? Isn't that the job of the parent?"

It's the JOB of the parent to raise their children with manners and self-control and respect for others. And if you, Parent, would DO YOUR JOB, your ill-behaved, out of control, disrespectful and disruptive brat wouldn't have to be taken to the office by anybody.

Since you feel that it's your job to take your child to the office- which is absurd, by the way- start attending school with your child, so that the teacher no longer has to do YOUR job.

If the banner flies again

If the banner flies again next year, will we (posters on this page) have to endure the complaints/compliments for another two weeks again after the tournament? Let it go please.

I think Corgi scored an "A" on that rant...nuff said.

Remove the dealers and no more drugs....right. Don't think another dealer will just step into the same market right away? ...right. Good luck w that.

I've never even seen this comic Overboard and based on the number of whiners who miss it I recommend the ACES quit going overboard to let us hear from them and just let it go....redundancy is against news writing instruction...didn't ya'll learn this in college?

Gangs aren't ignored, the cops are paid off...don't you know anything about the neighborhood you live in?

Turn signals don't exist...it's just an imaginary fairy tale...every kid who drives knows this...oh, kids don't drive in PA?

Good cause, bad representation...college kids are still kids...

Noted.

I know the problem exists but do you really think cops will sit there and write tickets to violators? Good luck.

Today is the first day of the week, to weeks after Easter so don't forget to celebrate by attending your local house of worship...this is the day the Lord has made so be glad and rejoice in it...as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord...now go find the time and remember it's always time to make a rhyme and seek to be calm, cool and collected. We love ya folks...now go out there and get 'em. G'day.

morning all, to the second

morning all, to the second rant, what was it that your child did (besides refusing to take him or herself down to the office when instructed to do so by the teacher) that required him or her to be taken to the office? were you setting right there in class to escort him or her there at the time? did you expect the teacher to allow your child to cause problems for the entire class until you magically got the message that you needed to go to the school and escort your brat to the office yourself? i have many more questions, but we will stop there for now.....

Sounds like if you were doing

Sounds like if you were doing your job as the parent, the child would not have required a trip to the office. The best way to make sure your child's teacher will not need to physically assist them in following directions is to teach them how to follow directions at home. Better yet, do the teacher, administration and the remaining students who are there to learn a favor and home school him/her if you feel you can do it better.

To the second ranter, if you

To the second ranter, if you had been performing your job as you should have for previous years, chances are your child would not have been taken to the principal. So far as a teacher being there to teach, you are correct. But if a teacher is to teach all, they must first address problems with brats, bullies, and punks whose parents think that teachers do not have disciplinary responsibilities and that their children do no wrong.

Sorry, previous posters, I did not read posts prior to my post. The ignorance of the second ranter caused me to post before I read any further. I hope all have a good day. dstewartsr, sorry, but you lowered your posting standards somewhat this morning. "This is both a rant and a rave for the ASU students whose picture was in the Thurs day paper making T-shirts for the Take Back the Night rally... do not feel that flaunting your bodies while protesting sexual violence gets across the message you intended."

This is what is called victim-blaming. A woman should not have to cover her body to protect herself from sexual assault. It's sad that in our society that this point of view is pervasive and acceptable. There are people who actually believe that because a woman was dressed provocatively, she is to blame for being raped. "Well, with a skirt that short, she was asking for it." No woman asks for it.

There are certainly things women should do to protect themselves, but these are things we are aware we do because others are dangerous - not because it's our burden by rights. We don't walk alone in dark places at night, we take self-defense classes, we use a buddy system when out at parties. We shouldn't HAVE to do any of these things, even though society says we should; because if we don't, "we're just asking for whatever happens." These are concessions WE make to keep ourselves safe from those that would commit acts of sexual abuse and rape. We're compensating for their lack of control and human empathy.

I hope that you can adjust your puritanical world view and put the blame for sexual abuse where it belongs: on the abusers.

Kinda sends a mixed message when the ladies are scantily clad doesn't it? I am not saying that they should wear long dresses and bonnets, but women should know that if they are gonna show it, guys are gonna look.
