Augusta is in the running to be the big cheese among American towns.
The city was recently named one of 10 finalists in the Kraft Singles America's Single Best Town contest. The winning community will receive a block party -- presumably cheese will be served -- featuring contemporary country act Love and Theft and stars from the ABC soaps All My Children, General Hospital and One Life to Live .
Love and Theft recently opened dates for Taylor Swift and Jason Aldean and is prepping to open shows for Lady Antebellum and Tim McGraw.
Other towns in the running include Three Lakes, Wis.; Bell Buckle, Tenn.; Richmond, Mich.; Hamburg, N.Y.; Girard, Ill.; Gastonia, N.C.; Lexington, Ky.; Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Twinsburg, Ohio.
Anne Field, the senior associate brand manager for Kraft Singles, said finalists were chosen from nearly 400 customer submissions. Submissions included photographs and a paragraph explaining why their town was the "single best."
"Our selection process, in the end, was about being original and inspirational," she said.
The idea, Field said, was not to find the most famous or iconic American cities, but rather communities that champion those things that are uniquely America.
"We are campaigning Kraft Singles as the American cheese and, in conjunction, celebrating the American town," she said.
Augusta's ballot, submitted by an anonymous four-year resident, touts the golf connection, gardens, history and charitable programs. Other towns cite recent restoration projects, an old-fashioned soda fountain and natural beauty in their campaigns.

Voting concludes April 11. Augusta is currently in ninth place.
I thought from the headline that it must be April 1; but reassured myself that it was in fact March 16. When I got to the list of other cities being considered, I realized that Kraft did not have their sights set very high; so maybe. Then I got to the last line and it makes sense. Augusta might look good on paper to an inexperienced new-comer, four years just isn’t long enough to really get to know how rotten this area really is. There is nothing here that is “uniquely America”…..it’s not called DisGusta for nothing!
AC, find the letter submitted by Deke. Where does this stuff originate? Will this event coincide with the opening of the new stadium or Masters Week?
Jimmy Buffett said it best, "Augusta is no where to be". Did J.B. and Jimmy ever get together?
Erskin Caldwell had a few thoughts about Augusta as well.
