Memorial Day weekend promises to bring a lot of banjos and barbecue to North Augusta.
The inaugural Papa Joe's Banjo-B-Que is scheduled for May 28 and 29 at the Hippodrome in North Augusta. The festival, benefitting the Joseph R. Pond Memorial Foundation, will feature a professional barbecue cook-off, music, rides, a Friday night steak cook-off and antique tractor show.
Artists scheduled to perform include country singer Daryle Singletary on May 28 and Ricky Skaggs, Old Crow Medicine Show, Chatham County Line, Crosstie Walkers, Peachtree Station, Little Roy & Lizzie and Doug & the Henrys on May 29.
The barbecue cook-off on Saturday will be a Kansas City Barbecue Society-sanctioned event, with 49 teams competing for $30,000 in prize money in four categories.
Other Banjo-B-Que attractions include draft horse demonstrations in the Hippodrome's outdoor arena, a variety of arts, crafts and food vendors and pig racing.
The Joseph R. Pond Memorial Foundation and Banjo-B-Que were established in memory of Joseph "Papa Joe" Pond, the late owner of A.B. Beverage, who died in 2006.
The idea was to continue Pond's legacy of giving while celebrating the bluegrass and barbecue he loved. The foundation will give proceeds to the CSRA Community Foundation, with a focus on cancer-related causes. Tickets are $15 for May 28, and $20 in advance and $25 the day of the event for May 29. Weekend passes are $30. See www.tixonline.com, banjobque.com or call (803) 278-4849.
Sounds great!!! Wanta be there!!!! But I wish they could wait until The Deke Coperhaver-Boardman Stadium and Multi Use Convocation Center was built. Maybe next year. Why is this event in N.Augusta, Deke? The Common, The Riverfront and Olmsted Stadium are available. Could you not have taken these sponsors to First Baptist Church for a "sit down and St. Matthew fallen brother session"?
If only the "TEE Center" were ready. My, My, My. Where are the "concrete trucks" when you need a "really big load of it"?
Didn't we used to have something like that at the Lock and Dam Park? Hum. That was not "downtown". Not downtown "bad". Downtown "Good".
Ricky Skaggs, "Country Boy At Heart". Greeeeaaaat!!!! Kansas City Bar B Que, way too much molasses , brown sugar, granulated sugar, honey.... More like a desert. North Carolina Bar B Que, good. KC Bar B Que, bad.
Does KCBS only judge Kansas City style BBQ?
No. KCBS judges are trained in a manner that allows them to appropriately judge ALL types of barbeque, from St. Louis and Texas styles to Memphis and Carolina styles. Our contests are held in every region of the country, and as a result receive the same fair, unbiased, trained judging process.
