Rants and Raves

Comments from our readers:

Why on earth are we still discussing any kind of apology for slavery? All the victims and the slave-mongers are long dead and gone. Expressing regrets is one thing, and education about slavery is one thing. But talk about apologies and reparations is pointless.

Sunday afternoon on Washington Road, a red car, a black truck. Did you think you were on a racetrack, weaving in and out of traffic. Your driving scared me. Please think twice before you drive that way again.

You people are unbelievable. If I wanted wall-to-wall golf with Tiger Woods, I'd buy Sports Illustrated. You're impossible.

I voted for and campaigned for Deke Copenhaver. I do not understand why he wants to move the stadium from Lake Olmstead to downtown Augusta. That's a waste of money. We need much more done with the schools, and we need to update Lake Olmstead. That's a nice family-oriented place and we need to keep it.

The HOPE scholarships are draining the lottery funds. Every year of college should be backed up by a low-interest loan in the person's name. If the student passes that year, HOPE pays that loan off. Too many are going a year, failing, then dropping out. If that happens they owe for that loan.

Heart disease and cancer are not the leading causes of death in women. Abortion is. One and a half million babies are aborted every year, and one-half of those babies are girls who will not get the chance to grow up into womanhood.

Someone needs to look into the pay for your public service employees (EMS/fire/police). People at McDonald's get paid better then the people who are going to come and save your property or life.

A rave for the Wall Walk event at the Augusta waterworks. We enjoyed the scavenger hunt and talking with Utilities Department employees, artists and Cindy O'Brien of The Art Factory. The wall provides art, history and science lessons all in one.

The White House Economic Council says unemployment will remain around 10 percent and it may take seven years to get the number back to around 5 or 6 percent. What jobs do they think will come back? Many high-paying manufacturing jobs will never return to the U.S., and we'll never return to the glory days of high employment and the resultant prosperity. Of course this same White House said 90,000 in the U.S. would die of H1N1. Hopefully they are wrong again.

Thanks to the Morris Museum of Art for showcasing the bluegrass concerts at the Imperial Theatre.

Since the economy seems to be

Since the economy seems to be a common rant today did anyone else hear Ben Bernanke say yesterday that there was no way the gov't could keep spending money at the same rate it is spending now. Either spending has to be cut or taxes raised. Seems the new health care proposal is leaning toward the latter. A little explaination on a "tax credit" If you have a home mortgage you get a tax credit for the interest paid on that mortgage. A lot of people think that that amount is deducted from you taxes. It doesn't work that way. I pay over $5000 in interest each year, the tax credit I get reduces my taxable income by less than $500. Think about it.

Cut out the government waste,

Cut out the government waste, stupid studies, trips across our country to "learn" absolutely nothing you couldn't learn by picking up a phone, etc. and you could give our fine Public Safety Officers a decent wage. Teachers who work 180 days a year, 7 hours per day on average are paid $45,000 in our area while those who are sworn to save and protect us often don't even make $30,000.00. Richmond County has the worst salaries and little to no benefits inlcuding the pathetic retirement plan. On the other hand, the turnover rate far exceeds other area departments thus costing the county many good officers and fire fighters as well as the cost to train new employees. They simply have asked for and DESERVE a DECENT wage - nothing crazy, nothing like Atlanta but at least comparable to other nearby agencies.

All Presidents could stop

All Presidents could stop waste with just one word.....VETO. If congress sends the president a bill for say, military spending, and there is an attachment/amendment for a museum in it, veto the bill. Then let the American public know which rep/sen added it.

Obviously there are many

Obviously there are many folks interested in the Tiger saga based on the coverage it's receiving in the major news sources and sports pages. So far I have not seen any misleading headlines in the AC that would trick you into looking at a "Tiger Story" by mistake. You have the option of ignoring them, but every whiny comment about "too much Tiger" reinforces the point that the articles are newsworthy. It's all about readers seeing advertisements. Thank you for doing your part to keep the online edition free for all.

Latest Gallup poll. Job

Latest Gallup poll. Job market down, consumer spending down, economic indexes down. Things sure are changing. And as a side note, the presidential approval rating is down also.

I have tried to adjust to the changes of the AC online, but for the life of me, the new format is a pain. This morning, I clicked on Across the Area, and there was yesterday's news. Must I read the date attached to every article to read the paper each day? At least with the old format there seemed to be some logical flow. That's gone. Thumbs down to the AC.

I wouldn't be weaving in and

I wouldn't be weaving in and out of traffic if I didn't have something to do besides talk on my doggone cell phone...c'mon folks...hang up and drive...it's so annoying to get behind a weaving driver who constantly hits their brakes with nothing in front of them or they begin driving slowly after abruptly braking to reach over in the back seat to grab their phone....I have work to do and don't enjoy the obstacles your slow, erratic and dangerous driving habits create for me...pull over or hang up...one of these days law enforcement might take notice and start ticketing you imbeciles...

Get this. So instead of

Get this. So instead of raising the cigarette tax to be inline with the rest of the country, the lawmakers of SC are going to reduce funding for medicaid for children. These morons should be removed from office. What a disgrace. Let's just spend our money on people who elect to destroy their bodies by smoking, instead of helping innocent children who have no choice about their physical health. Way to go SC.

We have little or no say as

We have little or no say as to the many retreats the commission goes on, or the studies financed by the same but if the mayor continues to push putting a ball field downtown , when there is a perfectly good one at Olmstead then we need to let him know that this will be a voting factor. Build an uneccessary ball field downtown and you will NOT be re elected...yes there are more important factors but they divide the county up so much that we need to pick a focal point.

Good Morning CSRA, from the

Good Morning CSRA, from the Ellis St. Canal Coffee, Donut and Psychiatric Center. Todays special is Apology Coffee brewed especially to speed up cell phone left lane campers, and served with our special Hope Scholarship Biscuits. They'll leave you hoping that the state would stop giving scholarships to every unqualified person they can register at the Tech Schools who drop out as soon as they get the check!! These Biscuits can double as hockey pucks or can be thrown against the windows of the cars of fast lane campers who are too obliviously talking on their cell phones to notice they aren't the only people in this world!!

Unpublished

The KKK is a terrorist group and should be considered just that, so in view of that, any association with, financial aid, or tacit support should be viewed as "aiding and abetting" the violent extremists. Like Hamas & the Taliban, this bunch is up to no good and their violent history proves it.
