Second man charged in December slaying

A second man has been charged in a fatal shooting Dec. 28, and investigators are looking for a third.

Richmond County sheriff's Lt. Scott Peebles said Tuesday that Marqueem Jermaine Mays, 25, of Cranbrook Drive, is charged in the death of Henry Stokes at 1931 Cleveland St.

Mays, who was already in custody, is charged murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Bennie Lorenzo Bell, 22, arrested earlier this month, faces charges of murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Authorities are also seeking Dominique Demario Ellis, 22, of Murphy Road, on charges of murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, Lt. Peebles said.

Man who damaged office pleads guilty

A man suspected of breaking into a University Hospital office building and causing $284,000 in damage pleaded guilty this week.

The Richmond County Superior Court jury trial for James M. Allen, 50, was to begin Monday afternoon, but Allen pleaded guilty, Assistant District Attorney Adam King said.

Allen pleaded guilty to burglary and received a seven-year prison sentence to be followed by 13 years' probation, King said.

Judge Carl C. Brown Jr. also imposed restitution on Allen, who admitted he broke into the Professional Office Building One on May 19, 2007.

He plugged a sink and left water running, causing extensive water damage.

Woman indicted in man's stabbing death

An Augusta woman was indicted on murder charges Tuesday.

The Richmond County grand jury issued the indictment against Anna M. Barrett, 45, in connection with the Nov. 27 slaying of Jimmy Finley Jackson, 44.

Jackson was found bleeding from stab wounds at the Augusta Super Inn.

He died at Medical College of Georgia Hospital.

Jackson residents ask to keep middle school

A busload of Jackson residents asked Aiken County school board members Tuesday to make sure Jackson Middle School remains in their community.

As part of the board's discussion on upgrades to six schools, the two options include consolidating Jackson Middle with New Ellenton Middle.

But one option keeps students at the Jackson facility with $12 million in renovations, instead of constructing a new site at Silver Bluff High for $24 million.

The school board will vote at the March 9 meeting on whether to pursue a bond referendum to fund the upgrades, with a public vote likely coming by September.

Man cons money from victims to buy TVs

Deputies are trying to identify a man who has tricked at least two people into giving him cash to buy TVs at Sears at Augusta Mall.

The thief, identified only by his nickname "Man," tells the victims he can get expensive TVs at cheap prices from the store, according to Richmond County Sheriff's Investigator Aaron Hannsz.

When they hand over the cash, the thief pretends to go inside and purchase the TVs but leaves the store.

Evans man arrested for seeking sex with teen

An Evans man has been arrested in an Internet predator case that was investigated by the Aiken County Sheriff's Office, the South Carolina Attorney General's Office said Tuesday.

Joshua David Taylor, 21, of the 4600 block of Holly Hill Road was arrested last week, according to a statement from the attorney general's office. He is charged with one count of criminal solicitation of a minor, a felony offense.

According to an arrest warrant, Taylor used MySpace in January to solicit sexual intercourse from someone who identified herself as a 14-year-old girl.

Taylor was assigned a $5,000 bond.

My wife experienced her first

My wife experienced her first "panhandling incident" at the Greater Middle Georgia Metropolis Augusta Richmond Mall. As she exited the lower level of Sear she was preceded by an African American mother and several children. Once outside she was approached and surrounded by the African American mother and several children who wanted money for food. She felt intimidated and contributed.

Armed robbers just hit

Armed robbers just hit Rhineharts on Washington Rd about 12:15am. At least 1 shot was fired from a 9mm semi-automatic handgun. There is a twist to the suspect descriptions on this one though. 2 young blacks of course, both wearing blue jeans and dark jackets, both armed with handguns, both had their faces covered with black shirts/doo rags. Here is the twist - one is male about 6'2" tall with a medium build, the other is approx 5'4" tall with a thin build and is possibly FEMALE! I suppose the couple that robs together .....
