Rants & Raves

Comments from our readers:

Your guest columnist suggests a switch from the Democratic Party. He makes lots of good points, but why not an even better one: Switch out of both parties. Switch to nonprofessional politicians who will hold office one term, then return home to their regular jobs.

The Richmond County school board wants to "use staff and other resources (meaning tax money) to intervene ... (with) students who have attendance problems." Why can't politically correct people think? The board should notify parents after one unexcused absence. That's it. Make the parents responsible. Anything less is absurd.

I see the Georgia legislature has voted itself another two-week vacation on the bad news that money wasn't as much as expected. If everyone did this, there would be no one working. Why don't they vote to give that two-week salary back?

To the lady who got behind me on Skinner Mill Road and blew her horn all the way down the road for doing the speed limit: Not the first time this happened.

I wanted to say thank you to the two city workers that came all the way out to the county line to pick up three mattresses that some lazy individual decided to dump in my yard in the middle of the night.

This is a Rant for the Richmond County Board of Education. $25 for our students to park in the school student parking lot? Come on! Our students have to be there just like the teachers. I pay more than enough to the school for lunches, student fees, etc. Give these kids a break. Heck, give us parents a break because ultimately that is where the money is coming from.

You showed a measure of class in your public apology, Tiger. Now how about returning to golf and show us more class on the golf course, and start acting like a responsible adult.

Those women are just as much to blame as Tiger Woods. They knew he had a wife. Why would they put themselves on him? They should be punished severely because they knew he was married.

This is a rant for Tiger Woods. Golf was around a long time before Tiger, and it will be around long after Tiger's gone. He's just another overpaid athlete that got caught with his pants down. Who cares?

- Parking in a school parking

- Parking in a school parking lot is a privilege, not a right. Frankly, ALL student parking lots should be fully funded with parking fees vs. any tax dollars. A mere $25.00 to have the right to park at school for a year is nothing to rant about. Tax dollars should pay for educational facilities, books and teachers. User fees should pay for stadiums, tracks, parking lots, etc. and in order to park in a lot such as that for a year, the cost would easily be upwards of $100.00 which by the way, many Atlanta area high schools charge.

- Parents should be notified via e-mail and/or an automated call upon request at the beginning of each school year anytime their son or daughter is extremely late or absent. With technology already in place, students who are noted in the computer systems as missing homeroom or first period could have their parents automatically notified at little to no additional expense to the school system. The real problem is that the few parents who would care enough to participate are the ones with the children who show up and attempt to learn, often times in environments that are not conducive to learning. However, it would be a step in the right direction and a way for the schools to communicate more with the parents.

- As for Tiger, he is a great golfer and his personal life is of no concern to me nor should it be worthy of major news outlets 24/7. I do agree with the rant however, that he should get back to work as most of us would if we were placed in a bad situation. Although he was wrong, it is ridiculous for any of these women to even be allowed to file a law suit for having relations with someone they knew from the start was married with children – they are pathetic and these suits should be dismissed. The only persons who truly were harmed were his wife and children and now of course his sponsors and fans. This case goes to further show just how badly our country needs major tort reform in all areas of our lives, including health care. However, with so many politicians being former attorneys, nothing positive will most likely happen in this area. With the laws as they are, maybe his fans and/or sponsors should put forth a class action law suit againt each and every one of the ladies since their actions have effected all of us.

Petey, it won't be Spring for

Petey, it won't be Spring for about a month...but foggy warm morning in Feb is nice if ya have privacy...took on a boarder recently...it ain't working out...got up at 420 and had no hot water for a shower....really shot my quiet time and roused my ire...time to move on. As for the Tiger BS, let those folks work out their private lives and let the chips fall where they may...as for state employees taking vacations...you'd think vacations would be on hold until some of the economic problems have been dealt with satisfactorily. Us working joes don't even know what a vacation is....Oh, and good riddance to Bedden...our school system won't ever get any better than the efficaciousness of our city leaders...as long as they squabble over BS and never make good decisions about the city, you can expect more of the same.

With owning a car comes

With owning a car comes certain expenses including the car, insurance, gas, maintenance and yes - school parking fees if the child wants to drive to school. The comment "give us parents a break" is part of the problem. Teach your child responsibility and let him/her pay their own parking fee. $25 for the school year is minimal. You could blow $ 25 on parking in one day in some areas. Try to go to a baseball or football game in Atlanta. And since you want to mention breaks..... most RC teachers are spending their personal money for simple things like pencils and paper, all because students who claim they can't afford them but have cell phones, cars etc. show up to class unpreparred.

Teachers need to teach

Teachers need to teach children they have a responsibility to learn, which includes coming prepared for class, pencil/pen and paper minimum...In college if you come to class unprepared I have seen professors send the student home the minute they show up and have to borrow one or the other...no excuses...that's my motto. Excuse= an attempt to justify my failure to be prepared.

Tiger was using professional

Tiger was using professional women. It was their job to supply what was paid for, no questions asked. Apparently everyone was satisfied with the arrangement.
Whining about the parking lot fees is like whining about gas prices. If you don't like it, don't pay it.
When someone tailgates and horn honks to make me speed up, it forces me to slow down ... a lot. (I have a gun)
I would love to see the primary government school agenda move to return to education. It can't happen at the local level alone.
The two major parties are different in their approach and apparent agenda, but the effect on the tax payer is the same.

Here is an Obamaesque Govt

Here is an Obamaesque Govt Nanny State idea - Forbid any student who lives along an established RCBOE school bus route from driving to school as long as there is even one empty bus seat available within legal capacity. Once all the buses are running at 100% full, hold a lottery for those students wishing to drive their POV's to school. Charge about $5 a ticket for the drawing to offset the parking lot construction and maintenance costs.

RC Schools and especially

RC Schools and especially teachers are doing everything they can to ensure students learn. If a teacher sent away the students who weren't prepared, were late to class etc., there would be very few students remaining but there would be a line of parents, community members, newspaper writers etc ready to hang the teachers for failing to educate the kids. It's a double edge sword and while teaching responsibility makes sense to us, try actually doing it in one of the classrooms in RC.

If they come unprepared

If they come unprepared Martinez, then just flunk them when it's quiz time and they don't have paper or pencil to take the test...that might get their attention...and if parents want to complain, tell them to put up or shut up...pencils are cheap and so is paper. If our society wasn't such a gimme-gimme group we'd have better parents acting responsibly on behalf of their children.

This boarder I took in is

This boarder I took in is from NY state. I overheard him telling a friend he was talking to over the phone that he'd like it here, slower pace, laid back attitude to work etc...perhaps we should take a hint from that observation and pick up the pace more and demand a little more from our non-involved citizens....instead of just letting things unfold naturally we might try not baby-sitting the ignorant and lazy folks who have jobs and hire those who are willing to work for the sake of having something productive to do each day...instead of watching soaps and Judge Judy crap all day on their fat butts while they whine about long lines at the DFCS office.

RANT: To the Tiger-haters who believe that he owes U something...he does not and should NOT have apologized to anyone outside his family. He gets paid to win at golf, not satisfy the perils of a sick and prejudice society. Again, Tiger DON'T NEED golf, golf NEEDS Tiger. Look at the rating fool! Get over the hate.

Nice to see someone thanking

Nice to see someone thanking the city workers occasionally. God knows, I wouldn't want their job.
Don't care about golf, don't care about Tiger and don't care what bunker he finds himself in.
Gotta echo a previous comment, if your kid balks at paying $25 bucks to park at school, put the midget mongrel on the bus. Bet he finds the money real quickly. You are paying for the busses too.
Kids don't have a right to an education. They have a right to the OPPORTUNITY for an education. What they do with that opportunity is between them and their parents.

I can certainly identify with

I can certainly identify with Oprah. For the kids who maintain the $25 is a hardship, let them mow the grass, wash the windows, work in the lunchroom, etc to offset the fees. Gotta get past the excuses. When I was a kid many folks worked in the book storage office to offset damage charges to their books.
