Rants and Raves

  • Follow Metro

Comments from our readers:

RICHMOND COUNTY middle school starts late in the morning, which has been proven the best for that age group. Why can't Columbia County do the same? My seventh-grader is on the bus at 6:45 a.m. That is too early!

PARKING METERS downtown will only drive people away and make life harder for the people that live and work there. Why not buy some land nearby and pave it? Then provide shuttle service to the downtown area? We should be able to do that for under a million dollars. We might even be able to build several satellite parking lots.

WHERE DOES the Downtown Development Authority come up with these baseless ideas? A million dollars worth of parking meters? The parking meter company is the only one benefiting from that idea. Trolleys? How about an overhead monorail? Why not a multilevel parking garage or satellite parking lots with shuttle service?

I'VE GOT A RAVE for the parking meters. It will be an increase for the cab drivers. They'll pick up more business, so bring them on.

RANT ABOUT Richmond County Sheriff's Office patrol cars not using turn signals or turning headlights on when it's raining. Another concern is that the public is encouraged not to use cell phones while driving, but I see deputies using their notebook computers while driving.

BRING BACK Ann Coulter. I miss her liberal bashing. Nobody does it better.

THE CHRONICLE suggests we need a "bipartisan solution" to health care. Wrong! The only solution that can ever work is to get government out of where government has no business and no authority. Until government is 100 percent out of health care, we will continue to have problems.

A NEWS REPORT says Georgia's "employers have yet to ramp up hiring." Clearly, if employers are intelligent enough to not hire more than they can afford, employers are doing their part by not sinking us farther into the hole we've been forced into by governments at all levels.

I JUST HOPE that our country can survive until November 2010, when we can elect people to Congress that care about the people of this country. I am still hopeful and praying daily that this government takeover of our health care will fail in the end.

TO THE RANTER who threatened to move from a downtown apartment if he or she had to pay to park. You are cheap. Someone with more class will move in your vacated apartment. Good riddance!

MY RANT INVOLVES some of the pictures posted in the Spotted section. Some of these pictures look so trashy. Some of these girls should just go ahead a get a job in a strip joint.

Ranter #1 - Can you please

Ranter #1 - Can you please provide data showing the optimum time for young teens to go to school? The standardized test scores would suggest that Columbia County's "early to bed, early to rise" method is more effective. I will go out on a limb and say that I think the problem may be that you don't want to be inconvenienced by rising early (you know who gets the worm). A 7th grader should certainly be able to set an alarm, get dressed and fix some breakfast and get to the bus on their own if that is the problem. I also believe that developing the habit of sleeping in as a teen contributes to
slothfulness later in life.

I think some people confuse

I think some people confuse being "cheap" with being "frugal" or even better... living within one's means. I hope the 2nd to last ranter got a big 'ol property tax increase. After all, if they can't afford the hike, they're obviously classless!

The Ranter who wants health

The Ranter who wants health care out of the government's hands is clearly out of touch with reality.

Um... yeah, I'd be pretty

Um... yeah, I'd be pretty [filtered word] if I had to start paying to park outside my apartment. The only time that'd be acceptable is if it's a parking garage with a monthly fee. Has nothing to do with having "class."

G'mornin, Bubbles. Here is

G'mornin, Bubbles. Here is one just for you: HAVANA (AP) - Cuba's foreign minister called President Barack Obama an "imperial and arrogant" liar Monday for his conduct at the U.N. climate conference, a reflection of the communist island's increasingly fiery verbal attacks on the U.S. government.

Bruno Rodriguez spent an hour and a half lambasting Obama's behavior in Copenhagen, telling a news conference, "at this summit, there was only imperial, arrogant Obama, who does not listen, who imposes his positions and even threatens developing countries."

Another one of President "We

Another one of President "We can talk it out" Obama's buddies speaks out- "Iran's president dismisses a year-end deadline set by the Obama administration for Tehran to accept a U.N.-drafted deal to swap enriched uranium for nuclear fuel." What a freaking clown we have as Pretender in Chief.

RC start times have far more

RC start times have far more to do with busing limitations then what's best for the child. High school students would struggle to find after school jobs if they had the later schedule. Elementary student parents would struggle more with before and after care, especially for those who employ high schoolers to watch their children. So the middle school kids get the late start. I have experienced both and find the earlier starts MUCH better. Many parents have to be at work between say 8 - 8:30 am. With a 9:45 start time, buses pick up between 9 and 9:15. I can't count the number of times I had to leave work @ 10 to take my kid to school because the bus was running late or didn't show up at all. I can also recall my child not getting home until 6 - 6:30 pm at night, long after the admin offices closed so no one was available to call, again because a bus ran late. In defense of RC, this experience was not in RC but none the less - I would much prefer to know my kid is safely at or in route to school before heading to work each day.

Parking meters or no parking

Parking meters or no parking meters have very little to do with the survival or should I say, "resurrection" of Augusta. The development authority, commissioners, or even mr. cure everything, (dumbobama), will never be able to help Augusta, because they won't address the real problems. As long as Augusta is plagued with pants below the butt, gangsta, stealing, stabbing, shooting, crack heads, the people who have money and are ready to spend it, will go elsewhere.

Strom, you're an idiot. what

Strom, you're an idiot. what do those quotes have to do with anything? So Cuba and Iran leaders don't like our president? What does that have to do with Bubbles' comment and the fact that healthcare, auto, credit card companies, etc need government regulation so they can stop screwing over the public? and to that rant post --- soooo you want someone to take care of your sorry behind but you're hoping the best idea this country has had in awhile fails in the end? LOL back away from the computer. remove head from arse.

naturehazard, have you ever

naturehazard, have you ever had a gun pointed directly at your car while driving in downtown Augusta? I have. Regardless of what goes on in other cities, something needs to be done about the BS. The same goes for any city. Speaking of, where are these supposed statistics that show Augusta is safer than most cities its size? And what were you trying to type when you typed "unsafvet"?

Y'all are so spoiled. In

Y'all are so spoiled. In other cities, unless you own offstreet parking, everyone pays to park (even in some residential areas) and not just in the downtown areas! Cities have money problems and have to make it some way! And, if you want to rent a parking place or garage spot it is usually at least a grand a year!

rather than individual

rather than individual parking meters why doesn't augusta look into getting the ticket machines...they could get 5 or 6 machines that dispense a ticket for minutes...people park and get a ticket and place it inside the car on their window...it shows the time the ticket was purchased, how much they put in, and when their time expires...these machines are used in europe and work just fine

Truth, they have those at the

Truth, they have those at the Gastonia NC courthouse. They are the BIGGEST pain. You walk all the way through the parking lot, get a ticket, walk back. Get done, go all the way out in the parking lot, go get your ticket, walk back, walk back. If you're way, way out in the parking lot, it's awful. If you're elderly, it's awful. If you have small children, it's awful. If you have to do it in bad weather, it's awful. The only reason why people do it is because it's constantly patroled by the police.

And Truth, if you are late by ONE MINUTE, they call the wrecker. And if the wrecker starts on the call, they get a minimum of $110.00. As soon as the wrecker leaves the lot, it's $110.00, regardless of when you come back. Charlotte is the same way. Enforcement is key.
