Rants and raves

Comments from our readers:

A BIG RAVE to all our soldiers that are away from their families this holiday season. You are not forgotten. Thank you for defending our freedom. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your families.

RANTS TO PEOPLE who go to the drive-through at the bank and don't have all of their paperwork ready. Don't get in line until you have everything filled out! It is rude to make other people have to wait on you!

MANY RAVES to the organizers of the "Merry Krunkmas" concert downtown, who used the funds to buy toys for children at MCG. Those children will have a better Christmas thanks to the efforts of those young men and all who attended.

THIS IS A RANT for the United States Congress. Why is it you can create and pass a bill filled with earmarks and pork barrel spending, yet when it comes time to find money to give medically retired veterans concurrent retirement disability pay, it's nonexistent?

TUCKED AWAY in the $1.1 trillion bill passed by the Democrats last weekend was a provision to end money for private schools in the inner city. It was a very popular program, and test results were very encouraging. And it was designed not to take away money from public schools. Only three Republicans voted for it, but the Democrats, who supposedly are for minorities, voted overwhelmingly for it and were the ones who sneaked it in.

IT'S HARD TO AGREE with anybody in political office these days, but if the story is correct that the South Carolina budget oversight board decided "to cut 5 percent from state budgets," then good for that board. Now cut another 5 percent. Then another and another till you get it right. Then stop sending anything to D.C.

THE DENIAL of speedy trials for traffic-ticket misdemeanors is absurd, especially when a judge claims the defendants are at fault for not filing a motion to get their constitutional rights. We're supposed to have those rights without having to ask for them. When a court, whether it's the judge or the DA (solicitor), lets a misdemeanor case drag out for over a year, that just shows the complete incompetence of those in charge. Replace 'em!

HEADLINE: "SALES TAX crucial to Columbia schools." If they can't live inside a reasonable budget, the wrong people are controlling the schools. Look at the results of public "education" these days. Maybe it's time to close public schools.

I agree with the last ranter.

I agree with the last ranter. Perhaps if administration was pared down, all unessential jobs were eliminated, more parents got involved, the schoolboard could manage to live within their means. I have never understood why graduation coaches, parapros, teachers aids are necessary. Nor do I understand all of the administration jobs. Why are so many secretaries, advisors, vice-principals, etc necessary? Seems jobs are created just to be creating jobs.

4th ranter. Obama said on

4th ranter. Obama said on January 6th, "We are going to ban all earmarks -- the process by which individual members insert pet projects without review," he explained. "We will create an economic recovery oversight board made up of key administration officials and independent advisors to identify problems early and make sure we are doing all we can to solve it." Yes, the Congress just approved legislation that contains over 5000 earmarks. But, our president will not sign it. Unless of course he is a liar.

Rip America, it would be considerate if you don't have your paperwork ready for the teller to stop by the counter where all the bank slips are and complete your paperwork there before you get in the teller line, that was the ranters point.

I agree seenitB4, it's about

I agree seenitB4, it's about time someone gave some to the schools in American instead of wasting on these other countries, that might go to take 1 in 5000 kids out of poverty in 10 years.

sometimes the slip you need

sometimes the slip you need is not at that little counter...they only put the regular deposit and withdrawl slips there...if you have a different type of account or they are a partner for a credit union or other activity, you can only get that slip from the teller...and for the drive thru ranter...do you yell at those in line in front of you at mcdonald's to get out of your way if they don't have their money ready at the window too?...i mean after all, how dare they order food and not have their money ready to pay for it......grow up, get a life and just be thankful places have drive thru's since you are too lazy to get out of your car

for once the dims did

for once the dims did something right...private schools should not be getting government funding period....if they do then how can they be called a 'private' school...if they receive government funds then they should be considered a public school and open for everyone...and yes it did take away from public school funding and everything else in the budget that needs to be funded such as ssn and medicare

Using recipient report data

Using recipient report data from Recovery.gov and economic and political data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Census Bureau, GovTrack.us, and others, we have compiled a series of facts about stimulus spending. Democratic districts have received nearly twice as much stimulus money as Republican districts and the cash has been awarded without regard to how badly an area was suffering from job losses, according to a new study. "You would think, right, that if the administration believes in its theory that government money can create jobs, they would spend a lot of money in districts that have high unemployment," study co-author Veronique de Rugy said. "We found absolutely no relationship. It just kind of shows that the money is spent kind of randomly." Rather, the study found that Democratic congressional districts received 1.89 times more money than GOP districts. The average award for Democratic districts was $439 million, while the average award for Republican ones was $232 million. "We found no correlation between economic indicators and stimulus funding. Preliminary results find no effect of unemployment, median income, or mean income on stimulus funds allocation."
