Rants and raves

  • Follow Metro

AS A TEACHER HERE in Richmond County I have informed my husband, children, family and friends that this year for Christmas they are to forgo the usual presents for me. Instead I am asking them to buy me copy paper, toner, ink cartridges, chart paper, pencils, erasers and other school supplies that I cannot afford to buy for my class and the county cannot afford to buy. Merry Christmas, everyone.

I CAN SEE IT NOW, Sarah Palin running for president. Maybe she could have Dick Cheney's daughter to be vice president. Really doesn't matter; the Republican Party is finished.

A RANT TO THE KILLERS at Westside High School for killing a nonpoisonous snake. The snake was only looking for a place to stay. Once the snake was out of the classroom, why kill it?

GEORGIA ETHICS PANEL for school test-tampering says charges are routine. To even require something like an ethics panel is a sign that things are terribly wrong, when public schoolteachers, who are first and foremost supposed to be examples of honesty to kids, cannot be trusted. And even the panel speaks with purposeful vagueness when it uses terms like "intentional" cheating. What other kind of cheating is there but "intentional"? An "unusually high number of wrong answers were erased" and changed to correct, yet the state director for "educator ethics" says "most of them are not deliberate cheating cases"?

TO ALL OF YOU who are so anxious for the government to be in charge of our health care, I refer you to the recent government task force recommendations on mammograms and breast exams, which recommended that mammograms be delayed until after age 50 and self-examinations be eliminated. Welcome to the world of government-run health care.

ENOUGH ABOUT the person that referred to the old fogies not paying their own way. Let's talk about the person who is really against Social Security and the senior citizens, our President Obama, who didn't give us a raise this coming year.

BIG RAVE FOR ALL the seniors' responses to the person who ranted about Social Security and Medicare. The person is probably upset that his grandparents will not give him any more money so he can do nothing and decide not to work to earn Social Security and Medicare.

THIS IS IN REGARD to the Board of Education wanting to take minifridges away from teachers. Next thing you know they will be getting rid of all the actual teachers, and the kids will all just get their lectures from the same few people over a television screen.

Just for jollies I checked

Just for jollies I checked the Corruption Perceptions Index for the year 2007, a Bush year. We all know Bush and his cronies were more corrupt than Obama and the Index reflects this. The US occupies the 19th position under Obama in 2009 but the US was in the 20th position in year 2007, a Bush year. You studious researchers will also notice that France was less corrupt than the US in 2007. France was in the 19th position while the US was in the 20th position.

The US is no longer the

The US is no longer the superpower it once was. Is it in the US' long-term interests to build better relations with other countries, or continue being arrogant and insisting that we are #1, when we aren't any longer? What's best for the US? For all those who insist that we are still #1, make a vow to not buy anything that is imported. You will have a tough time, from appliances, to food, to cars, to shoes, to clothing.

corgimom - Germany needs good

corgimom - Germany needs good relations with nations westward but since the days of Frederick the Great, the Germany people's interest have always lay eastward, toward the vast expanse of mother Russia. The World Wars were an upset but Germany's back on track moving toward resource rich Russia. While on the other side of Europe, the British are in a dilemma. They can't seem to integrate with Europe but they know their old trans-Atlantic relationship with the US will not serve their future interest. On the other side of the world, Obama went with his hat in his hand to Asia. Rising China will see Asia as their sphere of interest and quietly but surely work to exclude the US from the region. America's future seems to lie on the American continent, not abroad. We may have to learn to speak Spanish.

To the first ranter. Why

To the first ranter. Why don't you try doing without most of those school supplies and try simplifying your teaching method instead. Tell them to bring paper and sharpened pencils to school and then just teach. I know. That isn't going to happen.

Amen to ranter number 1. And

Amen to ranter number 1. And to SusieQ, your taxes are paying for superintendant Bedden's atrocious salary. How can he collect over 200, 000 per year when our kids don't have paper, pencils, or heat in their classrooms? Your money also goes for salaries for Julia Stein's useless position, to pay the overpaid office sitters at central office, and to pay for trips for some of the staff in the special education department. Bedden and the rest of his cronies should be ASHAMED. However, like mom says, what goes around comes around, and it looks like he'd better keep his head up and watch out for what's going around! Hopefully the rest of the public will wise up to his nonsense as will the few teachers who still profess his greatness. I FEEL BAD FOR BOTH OF YOU!!!
