Rants and raves

Comments from our readers:

I CAN'T UNDERSTAND how anybody can make a comment raving about Obama cutting Medicare. First of all, I've worked all my life, and I have paid my bills; I have paid my taxes; I have paid my Social Security; and now that I can't work anymore and I have to live on Social Security, it just tears me up inside to think that some person thinks that I have money stuffed in a mattress.

THIS IS IN RESPONSE to the rave that was in the paper concerning cutting Medicare. To the idiot that said the old fogies have been living off the system too long and now we needed to get off of our duffs and go pull the money out of the mattresses: We paid for Medicare. We still pay for Medicare. He probably doesn't even have a job period, so he can't look at his check stub and see where you get so much taken out of your salary from the time you go to work.

THIS IS A RANT to the person referring to the old fogies getting their free way for so long. Those people you are referring to are our grandmothers and grandfathers. They've worked their whole lives to earn what little bit of health care they get. Obviously you know nothing about working your whole life and paying taxes.

WITH ALL WE NEED in Richmond County, we keep getting these idiots coming up with things. Now they want a parkway from Blythe to Augusta. Who on this planet do you know that would walk or ride a bicycle from Blythe to Augusta? That is a joke.

NORTH AUGUSTA would have done themselves well to elect Andy Cheek when they had the opportunity. Augusta is a lot worse off without Andy. At least he tells the truth.

I WOULD LIKE to say thanks to Applebee's for what it did on Veterans Day. I am a regular there, and there were a lot of new faces. Support the area, and maybe more will come. Don't just come out when it's free.

THIS IS A RANT for Calvin Holland. Why are you wasting Augusta/Richmond County funds ($2,200) to attend the four-day National League of Cities Conference in San Antonio when you have only seven weeks left in office? This is just another example of why we are in the red for this city. We need responsible leaders representing our city government.

THANK GOODNESS our commissioners were able to go to San Antonio so that they can spend even more of the money this county so desperately needs. School nurses are being cut back; teachers are being furloughed; school bus drivers are having to bite the bullet; but we surely don't want the people who control these funds to cut back on their own little perks. That would be crazy, wouldn't it?

The commissoners spend almost

The commissoners spend almost $10,000.00 in order to allow 4 commissoners to go to San Antonio and at the same time we the citizens are being informed the Sheriff's Office Budget will be cut by $1,000,000.00 next year. We are short on deputies in our area, crimes continue to rise, the deputies are THE LOWEST PAID in the CSRA from the Campus Police to the North Augusta Police to the Aiken and Columbia County Sheriff's Office and their salaries are a joke compared to any comparable department based on size. We just spend $40,000.00 to study and see if we could afford a 50 million dollar asinine 6 mile trolley system downtown. Our commissoners can't find the money to provide adequate public safety for our area and at the same time some of them continue to spend money ridiculouslly.

To all of you complaining

To all of you complaining about President Obama Health plan. You've explained how you've worked and now on social security. I truly understand what you are going thru, but you know what? I truly believe that God has a way to make us pay for our misdoings. If you are old enough to draw SS then you were around working on the good jobs that poor people could not get because our government had laws that did not let some get the education in order to get the jobs. Its a sad situation but think about it.

cajunnana: Why are you

cajunnana: Why are you blaming individual recipients of SS for what the gov't conspired? Yes, they were working and paying into the system. But no, they did not personally take jobs from poor people. Blame the government, not the individuals who supported their families.

Asitis: this is one of the reasons why the area is referred to as 'Disgusta'. the richmond county taxpayers may as well just forget about this latest debacle and drive on because you will never see that money again, ever. nor will you see any 'benefit' from their 'attending' this latest 'brainstorming' event in s.a. the only brainstorming they did and the only 'new' ideas they got were where to find the latest skin bars and the best rita's and carne guisada in s.a.

OK cajunnana, how long ago

OK cajunnana, how long ago was your head injury? Medicare and Social Security are safety net programs that are run by the government and funded by we the people. Deductions for these programs reduce my take-home pay. It is inconceivable to me that my journey thru college, sacrificing and eating ramen noodles for years, and then starting at the bottom and working my way up to a decent living is a 'misdoing'.

this is a rant for the AC.

this is a rant for the AC. just last month we got inundated with the breast cancer thing. a whole month of pink ribbons and survivor stories and entreaties for all us wimmenfolk over 40 to go get our modified sweat glands crushed in a machine, just so we can save the beasties from possibly being lopped off at some point in the future. now, today, one of the headlines in the paper tells us that the 40 thing was just a bunch of bunk, that we don't have to have the first one until we're 50. so where was this story two or three weeks ago? and just how trustworthy are these reports we receive? a few years from now, the story will probably change again. they'll be telling us we don't have to have a mammo until we're one foot away from the grave.

To the last ranter - although

To the last ranter - although it seems stupid for the commissioners to spend some of the money they do it has nothing to do with funding for the schools. Your taxes are split up between the school board and county. They each have their own budget. The commissioners aren't screwing up the education funding, the school board is.

For the 1st commenter. You

For the 1st commenter. You say Social security should take a hit in the budget with the Obama healthcare plan because they have worked all of of their lives. With that logic we should do away with Welfare completely because many receipients don't work at all.

the SnObama death squads are

the SnObama death squads are getting cranked up deciding what medical care is "really" necessary. now mamograms for younger women are not necessary because they cost too much. as soon as SnObamacare is law we will see more and more of this across all age groups, even the small children, and all forms of medical care.

why don't we just stop giving

why don't we just stop giving Isreal 3+ trillion dollars a year....use that money to pay off some of the debt. They shouldn't be a real country anyway, and then we wouldnt have to cut SS, Medicare, or anything else.. Done

Why don't people stop buying

Why don't people stop buying overpriced cars, jewelry, clothes, cell phones, and big rims, and buy some medical and dental care instead, or put some money away so their children can go to college?

i'm with andy on that one.

i'm with andy on that one. amazing how you see people out spending money on all kinds of 'extras' but when it comes to 'necessities', they are suddenly poor-mouthing all over and whining how they can't make ends meet. go see what these people have in their houses and in their driveways; check out the 'extracurricular' activities their kids are involved in, then tell me they can't afford healthcare.

I agree with you xanadu. I

I agree with you xanadu. I was completely floored when I read and heard of the new report. Especially when the Dr said that we put to much emphasis on Early Detection?? What that doesn't make sense. And canjun::: what are you talking about?? That doesn't make sense to me. Of course I am slow to get things sometimes. I think your comment was very shallow and ignorant.

You still have the power of your vote. Of the commissioners who went to San Antonio, how many will be reelected? How many have already done this numerous times and been reelected? Whine less and vote more.

I wasn't surprised to see the report on no detection needed after age 75. So now we know the age when we become only an expense item. The "right-wing nuts" might be right about the health plan letting the older people die after all.

dani, surely you joke. There

dani, surely you joke. There are no plans for death squads or lack of treatment at 75 for all of us. That would not only be immoral but criminal. The plan is based on health issues and starts at age 72 for those with significant earnings and age 50 for those with no earnings. Everyone else is calculated on a sliding scale based on income. How utterly foolish of you to think we will all be treated equally.

There is this myth that a 75

There is this myth that a 75 year old person can withstand surgery as well as a 20 year old, or a 40 year old. The truth is that surgery at that age is very dangerous. Nursing homes are full of elderly surgical patients- for most of them, it's the beginning of the end. The same guidelines are true for prostate cancer. There reaches a certain point where no treatment is better than treatment, and they would actually live longer without treatment.

At a local Dr office

At a local Dr office yesterday- woman with 2 children, all (2 boys and her) had very expensive basketball shoes on but she was using Medicaide to pay. Those shoes on the baby alone would have payed for the toddler's visit. I am amazed each and everytime I see this! I remember thinking when our boys were babies "why put shoes on them if they can't walk?"- what an extreme waste of money that could be used for something important.

corgi. Wouldn't it depend on

corgi. Wouldn't it depend on a person's health and not the age? Some 75 years old are in better shape than many younger people. One size doesn't fill all when it comes to health care.
