Fry's lawyer steps down

  • Follow Metro

An attorney asked to represent a retired lawyer rumored to be involved in a bid to solicit commissioners' votes for the proposed trade, exhibit and event center is out of the case.

Attorney Robert Mullins said Monday that he thought it was best to step aside from any potential litigation involving David Fry.

Mr. Mullins said he was hired late last week to litigate a possible civil action for defamation of Mr. Fry's character.

"I felt like I was not the right person to protect his interests," Mr. Mullins said.

Mr. Fry, who has represented and belonged to citizen action groups in Augusta, is a TEE center supporter.

Commissioners confirmed to The Augusta Chronicle on Friday that they had been interviewed by the FBI about a possible bribe offer to two commissioners, Corey Johnson and Alvin Mason, both of whom voted against the TEE center in the past.

Commissioners told The Chronicle that Mr. Mason and Mr. Johnson were allegedly offered management positions involving the parking deck that would be built for TEE center's visitors.

As The Chronicle has previously reported, commissioners voted in 2007 to build the TEE center and fund projects to improve inner-city neighborhoods through the city's $1-a-night hotel tax.

Augusta residents voted in 2005 to use $20 million of the special purpose local option sales tax to build a TEE center, but the cost of the center alone is estimated at $38 million, according to prior reports.

Interesting. Any parking deck

Interesting. Any parking deck built in downtown would be under the control of the Downtown Development Authority which operates under the direction of the City Commissioners. Does this mean the City Commission is offering bribes to itself or is this someones attempt to sabotage the expansion of the Center City Trade & Exhibit Center?

It was interesting that the

It was interesting that the deal offered to Johnson and Mason involved parking deck "management positions." The briber could not offer shares in the parking consessions (profits) because there will BE NO profits. There is no way a parking deck for a convention center will make any money because the convention center will be dark and cold most of the time.

City taxpayers will

City taxpayers will underwrite a department to operate the parking deck. There will be employees to sit in booths collecting parking fees, accountants to cook the books, and scads of "managers" to collect fat salaries for doing nothing. Please, Augusta. Tell your commissioner to kill this TEE center now.

The TEE center is now tainted
Unpublished

The TEE center is now tainted with the hint of corruption. The setup was to drag the minority commissioners into the mud and have them appear as the bad guys and that goal probably remains, so they gotta be aware of their surroundings. Don't trust anyone with envolopes and report any contact with individuals that say,"This is just between you and me."

Yesterday I spoke with Mr.

Yesterday I spoke with Mr. Palmer on Kings Way. He said that as it stands now that he is NOT for the Tee Center but if certain corrections (laws) were passed in Augusta he would favor the Tee. He has plans to move Augusta forward. I like these ideas. Please get behind Mr. Palmer because we need to make ARC government functional: www.butchforaugusta.org

Again, the story here is who

Again, the story here is who was Fry working for? Who wanted the TEE built more than anyone? Who would make money off of it? We will never be able to trace things that high, but we could possibly get one or two in the food chain higher than Fry. The sad thing is that it looked like the TEE was about to happen with the Mayor's committee. There's only a week left for the committee to present to the Commission. I can only imagine the meetings going on now. It must be hilarious.

The mayor was attempting to

The mayor was attempting to railroad the Tee center. One of the few times that Deke showed leadership skills and it was shady. Sad.

REAL leadership would be for

REAL leadership would be for the commission to acknowledge that the TEE center has become so tainted that the entire concept needs to be re-visited. The commission should spend no more money on the TEE center or the parking deck until a referendum can be put before the citizens of Augusta on the general election ballot in Nov. 2010. The referendum should be clean - - "Do you support building a convention center (and an associated parking deck) in downtown Augusta for no more than $70 million dollars; with convention center's operating costs and the parking deck's operating costs to be funded by taxes?"

Anybody who believes mason

Anybody who believes mason and johson are not involved in this is crazy...NOBODY would offer bribes to them knowing they would turn around and spill their guts....their lying...looking for drama and trying to discredit others and the TEE center.
