Rants and Raves

Comments from our readers:

I RECENTLY moved to Augusta and attend Academy of Richmond County as a senior. I had to go pick up some paperwork from the Board of Education downtown and was dumbstruck. How can the BOE have marble floors, automatic hand sanitizer dispensers and ambient music throughout when ARC does not have enough books for the students, major roof leaks and gaping holes in the floors of portables?

A RANT TO the Richmond County Board of Education. The transportation office should be ashamed of letting high school kids ride the bus full of students. I pass by school buses and see students standing up. Suppose the bus driver has an accident. Then it's going to be too late.

TO ALL PARENTS who send their child to school knowing that the child is sick. You need to keep the sick child home not only for your own child's sake but for the sake of all the other kids at school. My 5-year-old grandchild (in a Richmond County school) is sick because someone sent a sick child to school. There's a lot more to being a real parent than making a baby or giving birth.

IT IS SO SAD when parents make negative comments, especially about the school their child is attending. That's why we have students disrespecting administrators, teachers and staff, etc. You make negative comments about the school and the staff in front of your child, so what can we expect from your child? Discipline problems. Parents, please support your child's school and teach your children how to do the same.

RECENTLY, I WAS ticketed in Columbia, S.C., for not wearing my seat belt. Guilty as charged. $25 and a lesson learned. As I pulled away after receiving the ticket, I immediately noticed a motorcycle rider with no helmet. I'm at a loss. Would someone explain the rationale of this?

MR. PRESIDENT, please stop trying to work with the Republican grand old poohbahs. They do not want health care reform in any way, shape or form. Ignore the Republicans and get it passed, public option and all.

U.S. JUDGE Randal Hall "departed from the federal sentencing guidelines to impose a longer sentence ..." on convicted bank robber D.B. Kelly. Good for Judge Hall. Now, if this judge can "depart from sentencing guidelines," why do so many judges hand out wrist-slapping sentences and then claim they had no choice because of those same guidelines?

STEPPING BACK and looking at the big picture, it appears our local government officials consider the money in their coffers to be their own personal spending money. They want to build stuff we don't need, instead of fixing stuff we do need. The economy is in the toilet and they still don't get it.

Last ranter, if you even look

Last ranter, if you even look at the bigger picture, you will see this goes all the way to our federal government as well and the waste or our tax dollars is pathetic. Taxes should be reduced by as much as 50% and all social programs cancelled except for those few that are for those not capable of helping theirselves. Tort refrom would be a great start to solving many problems including wasted money on health care but when most leaders in DC are attornies, I doubt that will happen anytime soon. Educational issues could be solved through the use of vouchers and school choice as the private sector does a much better job at educating our youth with much smaller class sizes at half of the expense compated to public schools. Even our post office looses 8 billion this year and yet congress approves bonueses for the USPS CEO to bring his salary in excess of 800k, almost triple the salary of our president. The republicans are not doing a great job of curbing thier spending and are certainly wasting our money but the democrats are completely out of control and have no concept of money at all. It is time for major CHANGE in government but not the kind of change Obama is providing.

Bedden has made some positive

Bedden has made some positive changes but the RCBOE has a very long way to go. The spending within vaiious accounts is unacceptable, the BOE Administration to teacher ratio is unacceptable, the hiring of new people for vaious poisitons while keeping the person who should have been fired employed by the BOE and just reassigned is ridiculous and a huge waste of money to various positions at the central office to the shifting of the do-nothing public safety director into internal affairs where her job will now be done by other employees with much lessor salaries. The BOE has a long way to go in cleaning up their huge mess and trhing to improve their graduation rate.

Why do we need instructional

Why do we need instructional teachers. Don't our teachers go to college to learn how to teach? This is a waste of money and bring down the moral of those teachers in the class room. Instead of instructional teachers, why not spend the money on more books?

ARose - Have you never had a job that required OJT? I think the continued mentoring process is very important. I had the same job for 20+ years and learned something new every day, often with the assistance of someone that had encountered the same challenges previously.

NEWS FLASH - Students and

NEWS FLASH - Students and teachers/staff get sick when they get back to school and are exposed to everybody elses germs/viruses. It's a normal thing and will pay dividends later with the increased antibodies/defenses that result from minor illnesses. It's best just to go ahead and get it over with.

Another milestone for the

Another milestone for the lost one Millions of older people face shrinking Social Security checks next year, the first time in a generation that payments would not rise. The trustees who oversee Social Security are projecting there won't be a cost of living adjustment (COLA) for the next two years. That hasn't happened since automatic increases were adopted in 1975.

The reason some kids go back

The reason some kids go back to school sick is the stiffer absent penalties....A kid who is excellent in school misses sick days and they can lose out on graduating with their class!

School Policies don't promote

School Policies don't promote parents using their own judgment on when to send their children to school and when not to. Some schools have gone as far as to say Parent Notes won't be accepted at all. So if my kids are sick but not sick enough to take to a doctor - they will be going to school. Sad that it has come to this but maybe if enough kids go to school sick - heck puke all over the place, the Admins who write these rediculous policies will rethink their position.

To the observant first

To the observant first student ranter - I could not agree more - there is a gross disparity between the downtown Taj and the schools. At the same time, IF they turned the Taj over and made it a school, how long do you think it would stay nice? Not sure where you moved from but there is definitely a large population of students and parents who lack personal accountability and respect for themselves, the school, the community etc.

To the Mr. President ranter,

To the Mr. President ranter, wake up and smell the coffee. Obama can't even find enough Democrats to pass his Communist Healthcare. It' aint the Republicans. You guys own the House and the Senate and still can't find enough support to pass it. If Obama wants any healthcare reform at all he had better start de-Communising his proposal and negotiating with the Republicans because he certainly hasn't been able to get his Democrats to vote with him. Besides, Friday evening's "news flash" that the Obama administration had "miscalculated" and that the deficit is really 9 TRILLIOn instead of 7 TRILLION should pretty well kill Obamacae since it automatically adds another 1 1/2 TREILLION to the deficit. There ain't enough working Democrats to pay off that kind of a deficit and any Republican worth his salt will move their money to Tax Free bonds before the new taxes kick in.

This is the tip of the

This is the tip of the iceberg - the wheels are falling off of the train. We are not going away. "You aren't in Chitown anymore Barry". "Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is trailing a top Republican challenger by 11 points ahead of next year's election, according to a new poll. The Mason-Dixon Polling and Research survey, reported Sunday in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, showed GOP candidate Danny Tarkanian leading Reid by 49 percent to 38 percent in Nevada. The new poll also showed Sue Lowden, chairwoman of the Nevada Republican Party and a possible candidate, leading Reid by 45 percent to 40 percent."

I can't believe it!! But

I can't believe it!! But then again why am I surprised. Just read where now we have coming to a store near you....$50 to $200 for energy efficient washers, dryers, refrigerators, stoves, etc....from our government. The clash for clunkers program went so well, why not do it for appliances. You got it! And you don't have to get rid of your old applianaces either. When will this spending madness end?
