Rants and raves

Comments from our readers:

"KICKSTART" IS A recent politically correct, super-vague buzzword that is supposed to explain where money is spent, even when the money goes down the drain and into the pockets of pols and their pol pals. E.g., Augusta City Administrator Fred Russell wants several million to "kickstart redevelopment" of some city areas. Government never built a successful town, and it never will because it can't. That's the work of private initiative and investment.

THE KROC CENTER fundraising leaders include a "leadership awareness chairwoman." What on earth is that? Somebody to make the public "aware" of "leadership." Shouldn't good leadership be evident from its results and not need somebody to advertise it?

NEWS STORY re: South Carolina students' tests. The first-year test replaces the 10-year test, which replaces the Challenge Test which ... Hold it! Just let competent teachers do their own testing and get government out of education. Government, after all, killed it.

OBAMA SAYS the current medical system is paid for by "employers, government and individuals." Whoa! Employers pay the individuals less so they can hand the money over for medical care; thus that money really comes from the individuals. Meantime, the government taxes those same individuals and claims it is paying a share. Again, all that money comes from individuals.

FRIGHTENING CHRONICLE sports section headline: 'Former Tide QB gets shot.' Zowie! That's scary! Then we find he got an opportunity to play. Don't worry, the QB didn't get shot.

NO MORE BASEBALL PLACES. How about more money for city buses.

THE PERSON who wants a full-time nurse in every Columbia County school should get ready for a big increase in taxes. I believe nurses make a very nice salary. Who pays her/him? The taxpayer.

A RANT FOR President Obama's U-turn on releasing the latest round of prisoner-abuse photos. After touting transparency in government he's now playing politics by using the old canard of "you don't need to see this because of national security concerns." We need more accountability, not more cover-up.

HEADLINE: "More passing graduation test." But are more learning anything?

City Buses are already more

City Buses are already more than supported by the taxpayer. Raise the price of the bus fare as previously discussed by around .50 cents and at least it would help reduce the amount of taxpayers money needed. Nurses, while a nice addition to schools are not required to keep the schools safe and secure or educate our youth and therefore with budget cuts necessary, these positions should be eliminated. As for the baseball stadium, any time discussing it is just as much a waste as any money given. If it isn't self sufficient, the government (we the people who pay taxes) can't afford it. Furthermore, the current stadium is rarely 1/2 full and is in good shape.

Removing the school nurses

Removing the school nurses sounds like a financially responsible thing to do. But who will do their medical job? So many kids have asthma, need doses of medicine for ADHD each day, have cramps, headaches, the flu, need their temperature taken, etc. And whose job will it be to guarantee the kids are current with government-mandated immunizations and the associated record-keeping? I can only conclude that the ranters against nurses haven't a clue as to how they spend their days. I've never seen a school nurse with nothing to do.

As far as school nurses go,

As far as school nurses go, the ranter doesn't realize that school nurses don't make any where near what a nurse in the hospitals make...which still isn't that much considering their responsibilities. A school nurse probably makes around $20K a year. For future reference when the topic comes up, a school parapro makes maybe, at the most, $14K a year! Now, how's THAT for paying someone who will be considered a substitute teacher next year (when a "real" teacher calls in sick) for the Columbia County System?

I already posted about this.

I already posted about this. Sick kids scare us to death. Our biggest worries are adverse medicine reactions and diabetics. If you give a child too much insulin, you can kill them. Under any other circumstances, giving medicine to children not your own, is practicing medicine without a license and is a felony. Would you be ok with a stranger giving your child medication under any other circumstances, especially one that doesn't know your child or their medical history? We have to take care of post-op surgical patients, too, "because I don't want little Johnny to miss school". It is frightening, because we know we are not trained to do this stuff. Do you call a secretary when you're hurt or injured? If you went to the doctor, and he said, "You need a shot, my secretary will give it to you", would that be ok?

I think the problem with some

I think the problem with some of the testing at school, is the teachers are evaluated by the test results. The test results are the product of the teacher teaching the test, instead of giving the children the well rounded education they need.

para-pro's are expected now

para-pro's are expected now to sub for teachers, next year will not be any better. They will have to cover a class if the teacher calls in sick or has a meeting to go to. I don't think it's fair to have a non certified employee in charge all day of a class. Never was there any talk about paying the para-pro extra to compensate what little they do make. More and more is being expected of them and all they can do is do it or quit!

Reality, teachers are not

Reality, teachers are not evaluated on test results only. They are a part of the evaluation process, however. Teachers also do not "teach the test", they teach the standards and the tests are based on the GPS (Georgia Performance Standards). To the ranter about school nurses, they are very much needed in schools, especially at the elementary and middle school levels. If you don't believe it, spend just one day with a school nurse and then see if you think they shouldn't be there.

Gotta' love this

Gotta' love this Obama...General Motors is going under so Pres. O is calling for stricter emissions...Maybe he leaned back in that chair in the Oval Office put his feet on the desk and demanded quiet for a little while so he could think clearly...I can just see everyone twiddling their thumbs while he, Pres. O, waits for a clear answer to a question...:-)

"Government Never Built a Successful Town" A little cart-before-the-horse there..... I'll go you one better....Most Towns Never Build a Successful Government. They just spend reams of other peoples money trying to prove they can. Most Governments are tools crafted by the affluent to maintain wealth, power and dominion. Three very important machines of the Industry of Subjugation.

colcamp1 if you would seek to

colcamp1 if you would seek to see the whole picture of Obama as one huge hypocrite then you might possibly view my statement in a less condemning light or maybe not...:-) Sort of like Obama putting out the word to corporate heads not to head down to Las Vegas for their conventions as it would not be seen as proper but is heading down their for a fundraiser for one of his fellow politicians...Millions of dollars have been lost for his "sweet" remark...Sort of making this man the pinnacle of hypocrisy...:-)

colcamp1 - Well lets see what

colcamp1 - Well lets see what I can come up with - vehicles that achieve these standards are typically smaller, less safe in a crash, underpowered, cost more to engineer and purchase, have absolutely no impact on global warming (even if you believe it exists and is man made) because similar rules do not apply globally, require more expensive fuel mixtures and limit our freedom of choice on what we drive. Aside from that, nothing I can think of now. It comes down to federal meddling in private business - if folks wanted these - they would be bulding them already.
