Rants and Raves

KEN LEWIS, head of Bank of America, says former Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Fed head Bernanke threatened to fire him if he did not go through with an absurd deal for Bank of America to buy a lousy company. Is that not a felony on the part of Paulson and Bernanke? Why does nobody even mention that possibility? Is everybody corrupt?

FIRST, A RAVE for beginning the new North Augusta ramp on U.S. 1, as this has been a need for several years. Second a rant for the planning, or lack of, in creating a temporary exit for the residents of River North. This detour takes us down a poorly marked gravel and mud road with a sharp veer to the left that is not clearly marked and a dropoff that you cannot see. When coming into this entrance after dark it is very dangerous and somewhat frightening. SCDOT or City of North Augusta, please help!

MY RANT is about the Richmond County Tax Commissioner's Office. Are these people so secure in their jobs that they can be rude?

COLUMNIST EUGENE ROBINSON writes that "torture is immoral and illegal, and it unquestionably must be punished." Reading Robinson's Marxist columns surely falls under the definition of torture; will he be punished?

OFFICIALS OF THE G-7 countries "promised to move swiftly to provide the necessary fiscal tonic -- tax cuts or increased government spending -- to turn around their own troubled economies." Tax cuts, yes. But "increased government spending," wrong, wrong, wrong! Lies, lies, lies! Increased government spending sends us deeper into the hole. That's the opposite of the cure and these corrupt government people bloody well know that.

GEORGIA GOVERNOR hopefuls are "already kicking into gear with more than a year to go until the primaries next summer." This is shameful and destructive to our whole political system and freedom. With Obama, et al, we had nearly three years of campaigning when we should have had no more than three WEEKS campaigning. A smart and ambitious pol wanting to be Georgia governor should announce he will begin his active campaign three weeks prior to the primary voting day. Then he should stick to that promise. Odds are a whole lot of voters would thank him for it.

THE ELEPHANT PARTY is not welcome in Augusta and next time arrange your Tea Party protest in Columbia County.

OBAMA'S ATTORNEY GENERAL would like to imprison Bush's legal advisers about a definition of torture. Clearly, Obama is at least dreaming about later jailing Bush, himself. But has Obama considered that, once such an unconstitutional and criminal idea gets used, the president who follows Obama could very likely imprison Obama?

A BIG RAVE FOR Tony at O'reilly's in North Augusta. Thanks for your help!!

Ness, We don't really know

Ness, We don't really know about torture as we were not there, how ever think about it. Arguing with you will not make you think the same way I do, and by the same token only pleading will do no good at all! The ONLY chance would be to crack some heads. It's the same with the terrorists. If you ask what they are planning with no penalties, they will say nothing, I'm innocent. So you have to MAKE them talk. Which is worse forcing them to answer or losing a lot of really innocent lives just because you are worried about what some others think. Hopefully, you will read this after you've read it all and decided lunch is over. Probably tonight.

I hope that during my

I hope that during my lifetime I'll see the U.S. Government have to tell the Country, "Sorry, we just don't have any more money to give away for welfare, EBT, etc." At least illegal immigrants have skills that can earn a dollar other than laying on their backs making babies to earn a paycheck. I'll fight for any immigrant's rights before I'll defend a bunch of lazy butt good for nothings.

Yonce, if you'd get your head

Yonce, if you'd get your head out of where the sun don't shine, you would have read the credible sources that stated that not only Pilosi and other members of Congress were briefed, but approved and said if the CIA needed further help and IF these methods were ENOUGH? That is participation in the planning and if I helped you plan a bank robbry, yes, I'd get arrested. Geez, you're dumber than my shoe.

jack i'm sure pelosi knows a whole lot about torture especially coming from an agency who's motto is "lies, and deceit". why is it always congresses fault when bush gets caught?he's the one who signed the directive, just like he did when sent troops to iraq.the buck stops with him anyway you try to spin it.rabbit not one trial has taken place that we know of from those detainees, when will they be released?oh i know! the gov't is begging other countries now to take them in since they can't beat anymore info out of them.and the others knew nothing to start with.

Peter Heck - Guest Columnist

Peter Heck - Guest Columnist - 4/14/2009 7:50:00 AM
As I was sitting in church waiting for the start of the service, my
grandpa came walking towards me pointing his finger. No matter how old I get, and no matter how long he has been out of the U.S. Navy, that's still an intimidating sight. As he approached me, his voice quivered as he said...."We saved that continent twice...how dare my president apologize for this country's arrogance." My grandpa is right. Americans need not apologize to the world for their arrogance; rather, Americans should apologize to their forefathers for the arrogance of their president.Barack Obama's first foreign trip as President of the United States has confirmed the naiveté so many of us feared during the election cycle. But worse than that, it has also demonstrated that our president suffers from either a complete misunderstanding of our heritage and history, or an utter contempt for it.Neither is excusable.

Garnering cheers from the

Garnering cheers from the French (of all people), President Obama declared:"In America, there is a failure to appreciate Europe's leading role in the world.Instead of celebrating your dynamic union and seeking to partner with you to meet common challenges, there have been times where America has shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive."Consider that Obama spoke these words just 500 miles from the beaches of Normandy, where the sand is still stained with 65-year-old blood of arrogant Americans.Indeed, columnist Mark Whittington observes, One should remind Mr.Obama and the Europeans how America has shown arrogance by saving Europe from itself innumerable times in the 20th Century. World War I, World War II, the Cold War, and the wars in the Balkans were largely resolved by American blood, treasure, and leadership. But all that appears lost on the president's seemingly insatiable quest to mend fences he imagines have been tarnished by the bullish George W. Bush. If Obama wishes to continue trampling the presidential tradition of showing class to former office holders and publicly trash Bush for his own personal gain, so be it.

But all Americans should make

But all Americans should make clear that no man even if he is the president will tarnish the legacy of those Americans who have gone before us.Ours is not a history of arrogance. It is a history of courage, self-sacrifice, and honor. When abusive monarchs repressed the masses, Americans resisted and overthrew them. When misguided policies led to the unjust oppression of fellow citizens, Americans rebelled and overturned them. When millions of impoverished and destitute wretches sought a new beginning, Americans threw open the door and welcomed them. When imperial dictators were on the march, Americans surrendered their lives to stop them. When communist thugs threatened world peace, Americans bled to defeat them. When an entire continent was overwhelmed with famine and hunger,Americans gave of themselves to sustain it. When terrorist madmen killed the innocent and subjugated millions, Americans led the fight to topple them. This is the legacy that generations of Americans have left.

If President Obama seeks

If President Obama seeks stronger relations with the world community, perhaps he should begin by reminding them of these very truths, rather than condemning his own countrymen on foreign shores. This obsessive need to put down his own country, has caused blogger James Lewis to call President Obama a stunningly ignorant man who has evidently never spoken to a concentration camp survivor, a Cuban refugee, a boat person from Vietnam, a Soviet dissident, or a survivor of Maos purges.Unfortunately, I can no longer bring myself to give Mr. Obama that benefit of the doubt. Not after looking at the pain in my grandpas eyes...a man who still carries shrapnel in his body from his service to this country. As a student and teacher of history, I recognize that America has made mistakes..plenty of them, in fact. But one of the great things about our people has been their courage and humility in admitting and correcting those mistakes.God willing, they will prove that willingness again in four years and correct the mistake that is the Presidency of Barack Obama.

Ness, as far as the

Ness, as far as the “detainees” goes, trying them will only result in ME supporting them if they are judged guilty and they will still keep secrets while in jail. What part of enemy do you not understand? Do you REALLY think they will come clean if they are gently asked???? Turning them loose will allow them to help kill more of our young men and women…….Maybe it’s better to just adopt the old philosophy of “Kill ‘em all and let God sort ‘em out”
