Rants and Raves

Comments from our readers:

STOP THE FREE GAS for city officials. That's fuel that could be used where it is needed much more, like an ambulance or fire truck. And let them pay for their own cell phones, too.

IF EVERY STATION in the CSRA had gas, and IF every driver tried to get gas at the same time, there would still be long lines! Go get gas in the middle of the night. The lines are shorter.

GEORGE, BAIL ME OUT. I don't need that much -- $500,000, will work for me.

TO THE MILITARY PERSON who can't find Southern hospitality in Augusta -- that's because it's now hard to find a real authentic Southerner due to such a conglomerate of cultures here, and who have no hospitality whatsoever.

RANT FOR ALL the morons who want a baseball stadium. You can't even keep the city clean. We need a drag strip.

THE CHRONICLE'S coverage of boxing and hockey are pathetic.

FOR THE AUGUSTA Symphony on the Cirque De La Symphonie: BRAVO.

THE REASON witnesses in the Troy Davis case are recanting their testimony is simple. They are being pressured to recant. Troy Davis is a convicted cop-killer and should be executed without delay.

A HUGE RAVE TO RN Nurse Lindsey of University Hospital emergency room! What a compassionate and caring spirit.

FOR ALL YOU arrogant, self-righteous Georgia fans: Thanks to the Crimson Tide, you can forget about your grand illusions.

WHY DOES THE Richmond County Sheriff's Department allow officers to bring their cars home. Especially when they LIVE in Harlem?

RANT TO THE reader comment section on Rant & Rave online. Get rid of it all together. It's not a chat room and no one is responding to the rants.

RANT FOR THE Coliseum Authority for paying big bucks for attorney fees for Fennoy. An out of court settlement should have been rendered to prevent the small incident from escalating into such an expensive situation for taxpayers.

RAVE FOR Sylvia Cooper's excellent article on the Iris Club.

Here's a rant for those

Here's a rant for those firemen who have to drive their fire truck to the store to buy coffee or lunch or whatever. Can't you just send one fireman in his personal vehicle to pick all the stuff up for the station? Why must we taxpayers pay for your lunch trips at diesel prices? To the military person who can't find hospitality in the south...go back up north where there is plenty of it! NOT! Just go back into the army or whatever so you'll be surrounded by your 'comrades'. Does your drill Sgt show you any hospitality? If you don't like the paper coverage of sports, get a subscription to the paper you like and quit dribbling on our chat board with such trivial BS. This rant is to our beloved city leadership. Do us all a favor and resign so we can hire somebody who knows what they are doing and is honest....never mind. No such people exist. Just quit spending our money like it was already yours. Ya'll have a stupid Monday and don't let Sunday bite you on the butt on your way out the door. DUH-HUH.

zeno, the fire department

zeno, the fire department drives their trucks to the store so that if they get a call while they are there they can respond quickly personally if it were my house on fire, i would want not want them to have to drive ack to the station, park their car, then get into the truck and go, i want them to respond right away.

Good Monday morning

Good Monday morning all...Ya'll have a great and safe day...:-) Jack234 I am not going to leave you out no matter what you say...Good Morning ..:-) Oh and to the ranter complaining about the Officers taking their cars home with them, two words..."Stuff it"...That was said in a nice a tone as I can possibly come up with so early...These police officers make no money as it is but do a job you would not want...They are expected to serve and protect just so someone like yourself can complain until it comes times for one of them to be 'johnny on the spot'...All this for very little compensation...If you don't care for them to do this then lobby for better pay that will allow them to live better when they are not on duty...Living better as in food, shelter and medical for themselves and family...They have the barest in many cases...

Since every agency with a

Since every agency with a take-home policy requires officers to handle any situations they see while in the police vehicles, the officers often handle an accident, drunk driver or other problem encountered while going on or off-duty. And finally, by adding to the number of patrol cars in a department’s fleet and assigning these cars to all patrol officers who keep the cars at home, this dramatically increased the department’s ability to rapidly deploy officers in an emergency state. During civil disturbances or natural disasters a department only has to call its officers and they are almost immediately en route, in uniform, equipped and in their vehicle. This research has clearly demonstrated costs and benefits to both a take-home fleet and a rotating fleet. This research clearly demonstrates that take-home fleet benefits far exceed the benefits of a rotating fleet. http://www.policedriving.com/article46.htm

One more thing factchecker,

One more thing factchecker, it has been proven out time and again that hotseating cars or parking them in a pool type system causes them to be replaced more often, usually every 2 years, with higher maintenance costs. By assigning a car to an officer they usually last for 4 years with a lot lower maintenance costs.

Why do we need a drag strip

Why do we need a drag strip or a race track? We already have an energy crisis, and you want to waste more fuel racing cars. I’m not one to worry too much about the environment and pollution, but I’m sure racing cars contributes to air pollution as well as noise pollution. Try to clean that up! Augusta doesn’t need a ball park or a race track.

Zeno as someone stated

Zeno as someone stated earlier the firefighters use the vehicle to keep that unit in service, They are required to be staffed to a certain level for safety reasons. Also it is a part of vehicle maintenance that they are driven periodically to keep the fuel from breaking down and the tires and parts in shape. Just like anything else if you don't use it, you'll lose it!

I'm wondering how much an

I'm wondering how much an officer makes. Last ad I saw for officers was to pay over 30K annually with perks etc added to that. Someone please tell me you can't live off that and I'll eat their hat. I lived off less than 10K last year. Also the ad said no experience necessary. No educational requirement either. These officers that do such a great job should be ticketing drivers who are constantly weaving in traffic while eating breakfast, putting on make-up, reading a book, balancing their checkbooks, talking incessantly on their cell phone or any other of the myriad things they are doing besides driving. Also they should ticket the speeders, stop sign/light runners, and those who are not using the signal to turn. When the cars are parked at the Krispy Kreme or somewhere like this, I can almost bet their not responding to anything except their appetite. And if officers drive from their branch station to another county, it seems ridiculous to argue they are saving fuel. Gov't employees should not have perks. They are public servants, so serve the public already. LE starts where local teacher pay does. Who works in the war zone more than teachers?

Zeno the yard boy - Here is a hint - most folks with skilled jobs make more than $30K a year and pay taxes. I know both those notions might be difficult for you to grasp.

ZENO - the State of Georgia

ZENO - the State of Georgia requires peace officers to have at least at HS diploma or GED. And before they can go to work in the field they have to successfully pass the Basic Peace Officer Course which is currently 10 1/2 weeks (going to 14 weeks soon) and must pass 12 written tests with at least 80% and numerous performance based exercises like marksmanship, emergency vehicle operations (high speed courses, threshold braking, skid correction), felony and traffic pullovers, searches and seizures, defensive tactics, etc. In this area they start at a little over $27,000 a year.

ColdBeer has done only half

ColdBeer has done only half of the math. He says that if police departments "hot seat" patrol cruisers (that is, return the cruisers to the depot at the end of the shift and use the same cruisers on the next shift) versus allowing officers to commute in the cruisers (letting the cruisers sit at the officers' homes) that the cruisers will not "last" as long. That is true, but ColdBeer doesn't mention that you would only have to purchase and maintain HALF AS MANY CRUISERS if you hot seat and make the officers commute in their own vehicles.

Unpublished

I work for a company with 50+ truck drivers. Those that have assigned units keep them spotless- inside AND out. They take much better care of them than the drivers that do not have an assigned unit. HOWEVER.... they are required to park them at the same location every night and are not allowed to take them home. Perhaps if the officers live within a 5 mile radius of where they work they could be allowed to take them home- otherwise leave them parked at work.

Little Lamb that is almost

Little Lamb that is almost true but you have to take into account replacing those vehicles every 2 years so you wind up buying the same amount of vehicles, but your maintenance costs will quadruple. I do have experience in this and currently manage a small fleet and it proves out on a daily basis!
