Rants and Raves

LET'S ELIMINATE ALL shootings by eliminating all guns. And, while we are at it, let's eliminate: highway deaths by eliminating vehicles; drownings by eliminating swimming pools and boats; drug addiction by eliminating needles; obesity by eliminating eating utensils; and alcoholism by eliminating alcohol. Oh, wait, we tried that with alcohol.

TO THE COMMENT of the Augusta Commission meeting in Aiken, why not? Augusta sucks. Maybe while in Aiken the commissioners can gain some insight and learn how an effective government works.

RAVES TO THE Richmond school board and Dr. Bedden for demonstrating intelligence and courage in recruiting an out-of-state auditor to help them revamp the Richmond County School System.

LET ME ASSURE YOU -- NO ONE you work around wants to hear you popping gum!

IN REFERENCE TO the MCG student who was killed by the city bus. I worked for MCG Public Safety for many years and this is not the first problem concerning pedestrians. Attempts were made years ago to improve pedestrian/vehicle conditions. Some of the problem was with local government, which was uncooperative at the time, and with certain MCG administrators. Also, many foreign students are not familiar with traffic congestion.

SYLVIA COOPER'S COLUMN does cover "Dixie Like the Dew." Early in the morning and mostly all wet!

RAVES TO DR. BEDDEN for his willingness to cooperate with the sheriff's office and the Augusta-Richmond County Transportation Department to reduce school disruptions and the costs of hauling students and municipal bus passengers.

COME ON, HARRISBURG. Get moving and get some things done. You are letting HONG KONG get ahead of you. Get rid of some of the bad business places. Get rid of some more of the drug houses. Start fighting for what we need.

Ha! Popping gum has never

Ha! Popping gum has never ever bothered me...actually, I have seldom noticed anyone that's had this habit. Try to focus on something less troublesome. Life's too short...I'd much rather have someone popping their gum (which freshens breath) than someone talking in my face with wicked breath.

The reason why aiken, north

The reason why aiken, north augusta, and evans. Never have any problems is because their goverments are made up of all old white men. Who are old white conservatives. In augusta we have blacks and whites in positions of power so their can be problems at times. But the united states was built on people with diffrent opnions not all people agreeing. With the new commission and the mayor augusta goverment is moving along great. All i know the census had to go back & change richmond county population. Because in 2007 its up to 198,000. So they had to go back and change 2005 and 06 estimates. Which mean instead of a dip in population in 2010 which was expected. Richmond population will be higher and is about to recieve a even greater boost. The whites building and the watermark will increase downtown residency by 30%. And with all the new homes on belair rd/jimmie dyess and tobaccord/hepzhibah area. Augusta population could be at 210,000 by 2010. Even though hephzibah and blythe are not included in augusta census. Richmond still gain people in 05 and 06. The metro population is still 530,000 in the census 2007. They just took 1600 from aiken and 1200 from columbia and added to richmond county population.

Great news nobody from

Great news nobody from augusta is moving to columbia and aiken county anymore. In fact they have lost residents to richmond this time. They are still growing counties but not at the expense of richmond anymore. Core counties such as aiken, and columbia are slowing a little bit. But outer counties such as lincoln, oconee, mccormick, and mcduffie are starting to sprout. This is terrifc news for the whole csra. Every major city in america has a vibrant urban core. The james brown townhomes will help alot also in bringing more residents to richmond. In the next 2 years richmond will gain twice as many residents as every other county. Aiken and columbia will be second and third and grown at good rate. But they will start slow down in the next 2 or 3 years after. And all the major growth will start going to counties like lincoln, burke, mcduffie, barnwell, mccormick, oconee, washington, and jefferson.

PTHS yeah the point was the

PTHS yeah the point was the city of augusta is growing again. And the census had to change its estimates for richmond county popluation now. And with the whites building, and the watermark downtown. They probably will have to go back and change the population again for 2008. Every major city in america has a vibrant urban core. Cities don't grown by the suburbs growing and not the central city. When people are in atlanta fulton has alot to offer. Dekalb, gwinnet are growing but atlanta wouldnt be . What it has become unless it had a vibrant central city. In its core fulton county just likes augusta needs in richmond.

It is me or has the AC gotten boring to read? Esp. on weekends. They don't report anything that is going on in the city. Could it be that they are toning down the real stories because the Masters is coming?

jonnneee, Augusta still sucks

jonnneee, Augusta still sucks regardless. As long as there is a handful of people who own most of Augusta businesses, progress will not happen. The villages at Riverwatch. Idea, busted. Xmart, Idea, busted. The new wing of the mall still has empty suites. You call that progress or growing?

In reference to the student

In reference to the student that was killed by a bus. On the farm we learned a rule early. The big one has the right of way. It doesn't make any difference whose turn it is, to avoid being squished, yield to the larger "person, place or thing" that's about to occupy the same space as you. (it's a survival thing)

PT, these foreign students

PT, these foreign students would not know the difference between a big thing that has the right of way and how to watch for it. My guess is, everyone tries to "run" across the street so as to make it to class on time. They don't watch too much about their surroundings either.

With all the real estate

With all the real estate available on the Hill, now would be a great time to buy. Augusta seems very much on the move and housing prices and interest rates are at the point where you can get a once in a lifetime deal. With all the exciting develoment and opportunities coming to Augusta, I am happy that we got rid of the cut and run to Columbia County crowd. Now, stay up in your little slice of surburban utopia and strip malls, while us Augustans move into the 21st century.
