Rants and Raves

Comments from readers:

THIS IS A RANT FOR THOSE who think it's OK for the Dixie Chicks to accept money for a performance, then use that venue to make a political statement. When you buy a ticket to an entertainment venue you expect to be entertained, not to be subjected to the performer's political opinions. No one has the right to push his or her own political views on anyone else unless it has been made clear in advance that the performance will be a political forum.

IF YOU DON'T WANT TO get anything done online, go to the library on Greene Street. As I write this, the woman to my left is constantly talking to the two men standing behind us, both of whom are talking to her. The security guard is nowhere to be found, probably sitting up front on his perch. If the perfume doesn't get me out of here, the fear caused by two big men looming over me will.

I WAS THINKING about the James Brown statue and memorial downtown on Broad Street. Instead of a jukebox to "play when you pay," how about a sound system built into the stage, which plays I Feel Good at the press of a button or at timed intervals? Just a thought.

THIS IS A RANT TO the Dixie Youth in Columbia County. Fifteen-year-old ballplayers were turned away because they did not have enough teams for a season. Understandable that some years players are fewer. But these players could have been told that Martinez-Evans Little League had space for them. New teams would have been developed to accommodate. Now instead you have some kids not playing baseball at all. This is terrible. I know there is some sort of Dixie Youth/Little League rift, but sometimes you have to put the youths first. Isn't that why we do this?

MY WIFE IS AN ASSISTANT to a couple of people, and I hear of the actions of those she assists every day. So I send out a big thank you to all secretaries and assistants on behalf of their non-acknowledging bosses. If it were not for secretaries and assistants, the bosses would not be able to play golf on company time.

THIS SHOULD BE BROUGHT to the attention of the county engineer so that corrective action may be taken. Is there any way that the traffic signal at Gordon Highway and Dyess Parkway can be regulated so traffic can move at a normal pace and does not have to wait on the left-turn signal when there is no left-turn traffic?

The thing is, the Dixie

The thing is, the Dixie Chickie made her controversial remark overseas. Stateside, the Ranter might have a good point. Some say it wasn't right for them to put down our Prez overseas, either, as though our freedom of speech only extends to our borders. I think it is important for the rest of the world to see us using our freedom to disagree. Maybe before we go around imposing democracy in other countries, we should work on perfecting our own.

The Dixie Chicks can say

The Dixie Chicks can say anything they want, anytime they want, no matter what!! And I hope they do it while they are kicking the shrub and Toby Kieth in the teeth!!!! At least they have the guts to say something rather than be the "we know what's best for everyone" arrogant, money hungry, earth destroying, media hound losers that you "shrubmongers" are.

In response to "THIS IS A

In response to "THIS IS A RANT FOR THOSE who think it's OK for the Dixie Chicks to accept money for a performance, then use that venue to make a political statement." I disagree with you on this one! They are entertainers and can use their songs, performances etc to support whatever opinion they want. If you really want to be offended, talk about all the politicians, being paid with public money, elected to represent "ALL" the people but who use their position to publicly promote their own religion!

You act like the Dixie Chicks

You act like the Dixie Chicks are the only entertainers to voice their political opinions. John Lennon, Rage Against the Machine, Pearl Jam, Joan Beaz, and the list goes on. Besides, the last time I checked...about 70% of the country agreed with them.

So Natalie Maine's, Ann

So Natalie Maine's, Ann Coulter's and Bill Mahr's comments are all free speech...right?

It's all free speech,

It's all free speech, localman. But sometimes I wonder whose side Ann Coulter is on. She talks as though she loathes liberals, but her words and attitude sure don't make conservatives look good. In reality, I think she's in it for the reason most are: the money. Personally, I have no respect for her, but she's got the right to say what she wants and I have the right not to listen.

no matter who is in power

no matter who is in power someone is going to have something bad to say that is life. no one person is to blame for the war, the economy or any other problem in this country or the world--it is a group effort and it will take a group effort to resolve the issues. No one party can make a change--all parties must make a change--no one group but all groups--you get the picture. As for the Chicks--who cares what they say or anyone else for that matter. But I do have to say that Natalie looks like a real and would probably complain about whoever was the president.

Natalie is a cluck she was

Natalie is a cluck she was just trying to be cute to an audience in europe. By the way most entertainers get a large proportion of their money overseas. The clucks are just like the rest of the HOLLYWOOD crowd, most of them don't have a clue as to what is really going on in the world...

Actually TIGGER2, Natalie

Actually TIGGER2, Natalie knew what was going on from the start... and is still right! They took a stand against something they knew was wrong & crooked and sacrificed money to stand up for what they believe... they can only be commended!

When an entertainers voice

When an entertainers voice their opinion on an issue, they know it will affect their bottom line. They know it might cost them some fans, some sales, some gigs. What they are doing is putting their money where their mouth is, just as if they were writing a check to a charity. Fact is, folks, Shrubya is and has always been very unpopular around the world. The Chicks probably made up elsewhere what they lost here at home. The fans that buy country music would probably end up with nothing to buy if they knew the politics of all the performers. The fan base is probably ultra conservative and entertainers tend to go the other way. The Hollywood crowd has more insight into the rest of the world because they get out and travel more than the average person.

Shrubya was an idiot before

Shrubya was an idiot before 9/11. He is still an egocentric idiot after 9/11, and he will be until the day he dies. 9/11 saved his bo-hunkus politically, but people are finally waking up. His die-hard supporters will never wake up, and they are all he has left.

First of all, TIGGER 2, every

First of all, TIGGER 2, every President in the 20th century has, in your words sold " The Lincoln bedroom for their personal gain. " Ask Rush what did he do to spend the night there. They had a special Grand Jury look into all of those things you mentioned and the only thing that came from it was 6 seasons of the series 24. As for Vince Foster, I can just as easily say the George Bush and Ronald Reagan had him and Ron Brown killed.

Let me specify what is meant

Let me specify what is meant by a solution. Offer an idea that is not based in hate of a person or political party, to do so only shows that no real thought went into the solution making process. Then explain how the solution would impact the community positively. See the cool thing about free speech is that just because you have something you want to say, you are not guaranteed an audience.

I suppose if he had commited purgery like his predecessor, he could be impeached. You can't impeach a president for being a bad president. Besides, do you really want Cheney to be president?

Well, true about Cheney. I

Well, true about Cheney. I really think Clinton was cornered and his little bit of hanky-panky was none of our business. Maybe Bush has not lied under oath, but anyone who thinks Presidents don’t lie is being naïve. Lying is their job. It’s just that Bush is better at it than most. I don't see where it is my job to offer solutions to problems created by the government. People are paid big buckaroos to do that. I just want a different group to have a go at it. I would say it can't get much worse, but then I realized that if we don't change, it will keep getting worse. Tigger, we could not hate Bush as much as you hate Clinton and his family. I wish you were like the "real"' Tigger, when he sings about being the OOOOON-LYYYY one.
