Rants and raves

Comments from readers:

THE COLUMBIA COUNTY Commission is going to waste $75,000 on a feasibility study on a new arena. We are getting to be just like Richmond County and I don't like it.

WHAT IS THE Georgia law on dogs or pets? The Georgia law used to state that it was against the law to have an unleashed pet running loose.

I HAVE A RANT FOR George Bush. He talks about supporting the troops, and then he said that he is going to cut their medical benefits as soon as they get back from Iraq. Nice plan and thanks, George Bush, for so-called supporting the troops.

I'M AMAZED AT why a local radio station that professes to be the leader of local news, was 30 minutes late announcing the death of Congressman Charlie Norwood. Obviously they had to wait and hear the news on the national newscast before they broadcast the passing of Norwood.

THIS IS A RANT FOR whomever votes on the Grammy awards. It was a waste of a Grammy to award the Dixie Chicks anything except a one-way ticket to nowhere. I don't personally know anybody that likes them and I don't, either. I am embarrassed that they are from the United States of America and I'm not ready today or tomorrow to make nice, either.

IT'S A REAL PAIN when some dog owners leave their animals' deposit where they drop. That's on sidewalks and worse of all, on your lawn. It is simply not good manners to let your dog leave its waste in places where people live. Droppings can spread disease and parasites to other pets and even to humans. If you see someone doing this, please call animal control and they will take care of these people.

DID OUR CITY LEADERS offer the Norwood family the use of the civic center for public viewing and to show our respects?

THIS IS A RANT FOR the person responding to Richmond County officers being allowed to drive fast. At 3:30 a.m., with no signals, lights, or sirens, I saw one going 65 miles per hour down Wrightsboro Road. He shouldn't have been going that fast to get doughnuts. Augusta is not a 24-hour town.

I AM SICK AND TIRED of the way Columbia County treats kids with ADHD. Because they score too high on tests, they are denied assistance in school. Teachers keep saying little Johnny needs to behave like the rest of the class. That's like telling a mother of a paralyzed child that their child needs to walk like the rest of the class. Believe me, if these children could be like everybody else they would. If Columbia County won't come up with a solution on helping these children, then they need to stop punishing them for something that is out of their control.

jeez....what did we do with

jeez....what did we do with all of these little trouble makers back in the day before we labeled them with all of these disorders and started drugging them? A lot of these children are just that way because they weren't disiplined as a younger child when they did wrong because everything was just so gosh darn cute. Now that they are older it isn't cute or funny anymore and the parents don't know how to handle them. They score high on the test because they are really intelligent, they just have a behavior problem and are smart enough to know how to keep up this behavior to break everyone down to get what they want. I've seen it many times.

I'm almost 50 years old and

I'm almost 50 years old and we didn't have ADHD when I was in school. Must be caused by video games because we didn't have those, either...or maybe it's caused by parents who won't discipline their children? Every kid I've seen with this "disease" had limp, disrag mommies and daddies who allowed them to rule the house.

To the ignoramus who still

To the ignoramus who still doesn't understand the concept of patrol cars going faster than the speed limit: You're joking right? Do you honestly think that a patrol car would need to have its lights and siren on at 3:30 AM? Lights and siren are to warn others in traffic - to alert drivers that an officer needs to get to a call in a hurry. If you say there was no traffic on the road at that time, who would the officer need to warn? I would add that there are some calls that require an officer get there without alerting the suspect(s). Unfortunately, the use of lights and siren would be imprudent. Officers are trained to always use due regard, and to consider the safety of the general public first - whether it's the safety of the victim of a crime, or other drivers on the roads. So go ahead and lob your jokes (unoriginal ones, at that), and think about the fact that any one of us could one day be the victim of a crime. Wouldn't you want police to respond as quickly as possible, and to catch any perpetrator? Oh, and just to add, I am a deputy, and I can tell you for a fact that a lot more goes on in this town under the radar than most would want to know about.

A paralyzed child can not be

A paralyzed child can not be made to walk, but he can be given the correct equipment and coping skills to function in an educational setting so that he can succeed and even excel. Those motivated can even participate in sports modified for them. The student with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder can achieve as well as others if the PARENTS have pursued the appropriate treatments early on and have taught them coping skills to deal with their problem. I have taught many adhd students who managed their disability well and knew how to cope. Others have parents that are not well read on the subject and do not take responsibility for their children's discipline problems. ADHD becomes their excuse for explaining away their child's lack of discipline and poor academics. ADHD can be managed. Stop blaming the schools for your ignorance.

Everyone got that the joke or rant about the civic center was a dig at James Brown. I guess it was meant to be funny, but it only showed that when sisters and brothers have children together, the end result is the person that wrote the comment.

To the person ranting about

To the person ranting about the Dixie Chicks: You just spoke your opinion and we listened. Maybe we don't agree with your opinion so I guess that means you need a one way ticket to nowhere. Remember, this was your rule... If I don't agree with you then you shouldn't be allowed to be here anymore. We all have the right to speak our opinion. Doesn't mean that every other person will agree.

To the parent who whined and

To the parent who whined and cried about their child with adhd, discipline your child and stop hiding behind adhd. There are children who really have this disorder and then there are the parents who make excuses for their child. All of these disorders are a money making scheme for the doctors and drug companies to exploit children whose parents need an excuse as to why their children do not behave. When parents used to discipline their children back in the day we did not have all of these crazy disorders that some child psychologists came up with to take the blame off of the child and their parents as to why their children can't behave in a public setting. To the parents of children who really have something wrong with their child these remarks are not directed toward you. These remarks are for the crybaby parents who use adhd as a crutch.

I have taught adhd children

I have taught adhd children and still do. It is amazing what medicine will do to help these students. I have one student right now and no one likes him. He does not have any friends because he is a constant trouble maker. He won't shut his mouth for 2 minutes and he will not stay in his seat. It takes 2 - 3 times longer to get through a lesson because of redirecting his behavior. All strategies have been implemented. When this child is ignored, he proceeds to throw chairs or kick tables. Teaching takes a second hand to babysitting. A little does of medicine which is approved by the fda makes a world of difference.....

ADHD is a made up disease.

ADHD is a made up disease. These behaviors are normal in children, and have never been proven to be anything else. There is no such thing as a psychiatric or psychological "disease." All things psychiatric and psychological are entirely subjective. The teachers go along with it because they can turn hyper children into zombies with the mind altering drugs.

Back in the day when I was in

Back in the day when I was in school, if the teacher said she wanted to hear a pin drop, she heard it.Kids were not allowed to misbehave. If my parents told me not to leave the yard, I didn't. If they said I could go to a friends house for an hr, I was home in an hr. These kids today misbehave because they know they can get away with it.

To Rose, enough said.

To Rose, enough said. Society is different today. However, there are concerned parents that understand the importance of an education and will choose meds so learning can happen.Georgia is at the bottom. It seems the parents of adhd children that do not have academic problems will not put their children on meds, but they do not seem to understand how their child's behavior henders others that are not as bright as their child from learning. It is really kind of selfish. And today with the NCLB act we have to watch attendance and suspensions closely so we have deal with it.

Rose, you are so correct

Rose, you are so correct about back in the day! If our teachers contacted our parents to express their concerns about our behavior, you had better believe, that behavior would not be behaved again! The government makes it hard for parents with more than one child to discipline their children today. When you have other children in the house, you can't afford to really discipline one child for fear of being arrested! Who will care for your other kids with you in jail? I think the government should stay out of the homes unless they are paying the bills! With some corporal punishment in the homes, crime rates would drop. You wouldn't have to worry about elementary schools forming gangs as stated on the news last week. It's pathetic! Parents can't really take a strong-hold on the situation, because of law enforcement. The burden is now on the system to correct the problem since parents aren't allowed. Time out doesn't work at this stage of the game. Kids committing grown folks crime needs grown folks solutions. That eliminates using no tv,phone, time outs, and other childish methods.
