Rants and raves

Comments from readers:

WASHINGTON, D.C., and the state of Maryland have a solution for those who run red lights. A ticket is automatically sent to the registered owner of the vehicle that commits the offense. This is something that should be instigated in Georgia.

IF A FORM OF CERVICAL cancer is caused by sexual activity, then the male is the one who passes the germ to the woman. Why don't health professionals treat all young men instead of making young girls take a shot to prevent the possibility of the disease?

THIS IS A RANT ABOUT the article on the murals downtown. I think the murals are very appropriate, and although some do need to be touched up, I think that would be a better way to go than removing them completely. As for the comment that the paintings aren't needed to spruce up the downtown area, I think that's completely wrong. I think they are a really added touch for visitors as well as people who live here to look at.

A JUKEBOX and flashing lights at the James Brown statue downtown would be so tacky. Please, Augusta, do not do that.

DEKE COPENHAVER and former Mayors Charles DeVaney, Bob Young and countless others would've acted in the same manner as the mayor of New York when the twin towers were attacked. Does that mean these gentlemen have what it takes to be the president of the United States?

IN RESPONSE to the comment about disrespectful punks torturing elderly people in a local neighborhood: That's another good reason we shouldn't outlaw guns. We senior citizens can't duke it out with young, insolent thugs, but we can still shoot. Senior citizens need an equalizer, like a handgun, so that we aren't at the mercy of people who have no mercy.

I'VE NEVER SEEN ANYBODY politic so early before election. But then, everybody's not for Hillary Clinton, and I certainly wish they would leave her off of there for a while and let us have a rest.

RAVE FOR CAL RIPKEN JR. He's supporting the Augusta area; now it's time for the Augusta area to support the GreenJackets.

Murals on downtown buildings

Murals on downtown buildings are wonderful accents. There are many cities with this concept. Here's an idea...There are many talented young kids in our area who could do fantastic things. Could even help some kids stay out of trouble. Our city leaders should get together w/youth groups or even school officials. Of course would have to set guidelines.

I seem to recall complaints a

I seem to recall complaints a few years ago regarding automatic ticketing at traffic signals. Wasn't the argument against the cameras based around the possibility that a guilty speeder would recognize the camera and, in a futile maneuver, slam on the brakes, possibly endangering other drivers? I thought that was the silliest, most irrational debate I'd ever seen. Patriciathomas, math & logic training would have kept the inept thinkers from even voicing their ridiculous notions.

Cameras at traffic lights

Cameras at traffic lights (esp. at the intersection of Bobby Jones and Washington Rd.) are a wonderful idea. Imagine how many accidents would not occur and how much money this would mean to Richmond and Columbia Counties. I think we as citizens should pressure the counties to put them up. The people that come up with the lame excuses against this, and think that this is a violation of their civil rights will be the first people to receive tickets. Sounds like a better idea than a dragstrip!!

Yeah, let's put cameras in

Yeah, let's put cameras in everybodys bathroom too, to make sure they wipe properly. How 'bout we follow and record every move of every congressman and government official. After all, if they aren't doing anything wrong, what have they got to hide? Get real people. This is America, the more power we give the government and police the closer we get to losing the freedoms we have. They are never going to stop pushing their adjenda and the more we give in the weaker we become.

Why are you folks talking as though cameras at intersections are a new idea? I'm sure it's been at least 10-15 years since cameras were put at intersections in MANY cities across the country, and it has been successful. Oh wait I forgot this is Augusta and it's still 1960 here.

Yeah BBsouth, resort to name

Yeah BBsouth, resort to name calling to show your ignorance. How about making cars that just do the speed limit? That would save lives. But the government and insurance companies don't want that. They want more laws to charge people with more crimes. They aren't worried about your safety. They are worried about how they are going to charge you more for insurance. They are worried about getting more laws passed to further monitor and track us. No cameras at red lights was good enough for our parents, it's good enough for us.

seatbelts and traffic lights

seatbelts and traffic lights prevent death if they are used properly. I wear my seatbelt for safety reasons, not because I'm afraid of getting a ticket for not wearing it.

Right there local. Noone

Right there local. Noone cared about seat belts or DUI's before there was a law requiring insurance. Lives aren't what the insurance companies want to save. It's money. They don't care if you die, they just care about having some law on the books that gives them an avenue to deny liability. How 'bout we install a chip in every car that automatically tickets anyone who breaks the speed limit or runs a stop light? Let that happen and it's only a matter of time until we are all fitted with an electronic chip to monitor everything we do. NO MORE COPS and NO MORE LAWS!!!!

So if my spouse is deployed

So if my spouse is deployed and the vehicle is registered in his name, he gets charged with running a red light in good ol' Augusta? How will that hold up in court?

Traffic signals prevent

Traffic signals prevent NOTHING. Drivers do! Traffic lights are tools to control law-abiding citizens, but are themselves subject to failure, and when they do-watch out. Drivers simply ignore all the regulations/rules/standards about treating lights that are out of order (not functioning) as a stop sign. Whoever gets to the intersection goes first; get there at the same time, driver on the right goes, unless at a traffic circle, etc. This is only an example, and drivers themselves must accept responsibility, and obey the traffic regulations set forth in each and every state!

I think the cameras should be

I think the cameras should be illegal due to the fact that the driver should be ticketed and the registered owner may not have been driving. If the cameras employ facial recognition technology and the system can match to a drivers license photo then OK!!

Lets make the deputies get out of there comfy patrol cars and do their jobs. I have seen so many Richmond Co. and Columbia Co. deputies let offenses go by. It is just unbelievable.

I think everyone knows that

I think everyone knows that the astronaut thingy is being blown WAY out of proportion. It's just another example of overzealous, media hungry law enforcement making outragous charges any and everytime they can. If she worked for Ronnie Strength and done this, she'd get a reprimand similar to that of the officer that made those threats against a local reporter for breaking their myspace account stories. Imagine, attemted murder charges for someone packing a BB gun. Does anyone think this lady will get a fair trial anywhere in America now? I don't.

Red light cameras have been

Red light cameras have been done before in many cities. I have never received a ticket based on one, but have heard that the cameras are pretty good. You can even make out the driver in the picture. There is always the thought that someone else that you let drive your car might run the light, but the registered owner would then get the ticket. Well, that's when the registered owners should go to traffic court and defend themselves. If they have proof that they weren't driving then the case should be thrown out. Anyone on deployment obviously can't go to traffic court, so the person who drove should go and explain that to the judge.

gary I couldn't agree more.

gary I couldn't agree more. Yes there are traffic cameras in other cities but the majority of those tickets are disreguarded and dead docketed because the DA's know that they are very difficult to hold up in court with even the slightest defense. Every time we surrender one of our freedoms we spit in the faces of the heroes who have fought and died for them. By the way did any of you ever wonder why the biggest buildings in any major city are either banks or insurance companies. Follow the money and you'll see insurance companies couldn't give a small rodents rear end about policy holders. We already know what banks are there for and it's not the average guy with a mortage and a savings account.

I moved here from Maryland 8

I moved here from Maryland 8 months ago. The red light camera's are a terrible idea. The red light camera's are dangerous and cause accidents due to drivers either trying to beat the yellow light or slamming on their brakes in anticipation of the yellow light. What you don't know is they reduce the amount of time of the yellow light, making it almost impossible to stop safely. Another issue is that the "ticket" is signed by a police officer that was neither at the scene or watching the camera at the time of the incident.
