Program targets HIV in black women

  • Follow Health

Georgia has one of the nation’s highest rates of HIV, the virus that can develop into AIDS, and many of those infected are African-American women.

In fact, the rate of black women with an HIV diagnosis in the state is 12 times that of white women, according to the CDC.

An Augusta program, though, is helping African-American women get treatment for substance abuse and mental health problems, two factors that increase the risk of getting an HIV infection or spreading it.

The program, SHE PREVAILS,  is funded by a three-year, $1.6 million federal grant.

“We want to help women become empowered to take care of their sexual health, to protect themselves, to negotiate complex relationships,” says the program’s director, Lara Stepleman, a psychologist at the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Regents University. “The idea behind all of this it to help reduce HIV spread.”

Stepleman talks about how the program works, its challenges and successes, in the above video interview, courtesy of Georgia Regents University.

HIV/AIDS is Augusta's hidden

HIV/AIDS is Augusta's hidden epidemic.

This program is sorely needed, nobody deserves that hideous disease.

The article states that Georgia has one of the highest rates but it does not say why.

Why don't they target the

Why don't they target the people infecting them?

I know, the Feds think the solution is always to throw money at the results, not the cause.

and comment on why the Black women end up with HIV in GA 12 times more often than white women, according to the CDC?

The DOJ won't allow this

The DOJ won't allow this because it is racial profiling. Even though blacks have an epidemic with AIDS and all STDS, you can't isolate this group it would be like profiling people of who appear "muslim". You can't have a patch work of logic in the DOJ-well I guess you can.

Blacks generally start having

Blacks generally start having sex younger than whites , and often have multiple partners (fact one report over 50% of blacks from 15-21 have a STD), however apparently behaviors can't explain the discrepancy with higher rates of AIDS in blacks.

Women should know this

What Black Women Should Know About HIV/AIDS

Without question, there is a higher rate of HIV and AIDS in the Black female population in the United States than among any other group next to Black men. Recent reports fromthe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention document the devastating fact that black women account for nearly 70 percent of the female cases, while whites made up 18percent and Hispanics 8.5 percent. The disproportionate number of HIV and AIDS cases among Black women as compared to their representation in the overall female populationof the United States is compelling evidence of the scope and depth of this problem in ou rcommunities.

Often buried within the statistics of the general AIDS population, or lumped togetherwith Black men, the statistics on how this disease affects Black women are startling. There is an epidemic of AIDS among us and it is poised to wipe out a generation. AIDSis the No. 1 cause of death for black women ages 25 to 44, beating out heart disease, cancer and homicide. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, black women made up 69 percent of AIDS diagnoses among women in 2004 and of all women living with AIDS, 64 percent are estimated to be black.

Heterosexual transmission is now the most commonly reported mode of HIV transmission among women. Although non-Hispanic blacks constituted 13% of thepopulation of the 32 states during these 4 years, they accounted for more than half(51.3%) of the HIV/AIDS diagnoses, including 68.8% of diagnoses among females and 44.5% of those among males.

Discrimination

Why doesn't SHE PREVAILS help ALL WOMEN to "become empowered to take care of their sexual health, to protect themselves, to negotiate complex relationships."

If there was an organization to help white women do the same, they would be accused of discrimination for targeting "white" women.

It is believed that because

It is believed that because homosexuality is not well=accepted in the black community, many men are on the down low, and then the innocent women get infected.

There may also be a genetic

There may also be a genetic predisposition to it, too, similar to sickle-cell genetic predisposition. Nobody knows at this time, but scientists are pursuing this hypothesis.

GodissoGood, that would be

GodissoGood, that would be like targeting the black community for cystic fibrosis.

There are some blacks with cystic fibrosis, but it's very rare- nearly everybody that has it is white.

Race is irrelevant

Cystic Fibrosis, however, is not caused by the actions of the infected person. Most of the time, HIV is. The point I am trying to make is that no group should be targeted for assistance based on race. To do so would leave the minorities in an uproar.
