A rabid fox attacked one person and tried to attack another before being killed Feb. 27.

The attack occurred at a business in the area of Mike Padgett Highway, Goshen Industrial Boulevard and Doug Barnard Parkway, according to the Richmond County Health Department.

Environmental officials began notifying businesses in the vicinity Friday, asking them to report any human contact with wild animals to the health department and contact between pets and wild animals to Augusta Animal Services.

The dead fox was tested at the Georgia Public Health Laboratory where it was confirmed Thursday that the animal was rabid.

The victim was notified and began treatment for rabies.
