Woman is accused of scamming her friend
CHARLESTON, S.C. --- Charleston police say a woman who claimed to be a cancer patient and allegedly scammed a friend of more than $50,000 has turned herself in.
Charleston Police spokesman Charles Francis says 41-year-old Brandi Michelle Reeves surrendered to police Thursday. Francis says Reeves turned herself in after seeing and hearing news accounts.
The victim says a woman moved into her house last September, saying she had cancer and no money to pay for treatment. The victim says she wrote checks for $53,000 before discovering the woman was not ill. Reeves is charged with obtaining goods by false pretenses.
$10 million in cocaine found hidden in truck
FLORENCE, S.C. --- Florence County deputies say $10 million worth of cocaine found hidden in a tractor-trailer full of furniture is the largest drug bust in the agency's history.
Authorities say a drug-sniffing dog alerted deputies to the drugs during a Thursday morning traffic stop on Interstate 95.
Investigators say there was about 233 pounds of cocaine. The 18-wheeler was registered to a Florida moving company.
Deputies say they released the driver and a passenger because they don't think they knew someone hid cocaine in their truck. Investigators are still trying to determine who put the cocaine in the 18-wheeler and where the drugs were going.
