Haley skips governors' meeting

COLUMBIA — South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley doesn't plan to attend the National Governors Association meeting in Washington this weekend.

The State newspaper reported today that Haley is skipping the meeting because she decided not to pay the $100,000 annual dues for the policy and lobbying group.

Haley will attend a meeting of Republican governors.

Haley spokesman Rob Godrey says the governor didn't think South Carolina could afford the dues as it the state grapples with a shortfall of hundreds of millions of dollars. He says the Republican Governors Association is covering Haley's lodging and her transportaiton is being dontated.

Governors often skip the national meeting. The Republican governors of Texas and Idaho also are skipping this Naitonal Governors Association meeting.
