2 suggested for State Court vacancy

Gov. Sonny Perdue's Judicial Nominating Commission has submitted recommendations to fill a new judgeship on the State Court of Richmond County, according to a press release this morning.

They are:

  • Benjamin Allen -Judge, Juvenile Court, Augusta Judicial Circuit
  • John Flythe - Associate Judge, Grovetown Municipal Court

The vacancy was created by the resignation of Chief Judge Gayle B. Hamrick. Hamrick stepped down and took senior judge status on May 1. Judge Richard Slaby will become chief judge and the governor will appoint someone to fill his vacant seat. Hamrick's term expires on Dec. 31, 2012, according to Lynn Bailey, director of the Richmond County Board of Elections.

"What it would mean is that whenever a decision is made on the exact appointee, that person would assume the seat and would continue to service throughout the unexpired term," Hamrick said.

An election will be held for the seat in November 2012, she said.
