Sheriff, 12th District runoff will cost Richmond County $68,775

The runoff for Richmond Coun­ty sheriff and the 12th Con­gres­sional District Re­publican nomination won’t come cheap.

Like any election, the Aug. 21 runoff means paying for poll workers, printing, rent and other expenses.

In Richmond County, the cost will be $68,775, including $45,000 for poll worker salaries, $5,000 for printing, $3,950 for building rental and $1,300 for Board of Elections salaries, according to a worksheet provided to Augusta Commis­sion members for approval at a committee meeting Monday.

Local governing authorities are required to pay for the runoffs, which are not budgeted expenses, according to the proposal to the finance committee.

Early voting for any reason starts soon. The sheriff’s runoff between Scott Peebles and Richard Roundtree is the only item on the Demo­cra­tic ballot. The 12th District runoff between Rep. Lee An­der­son and Rick Allen is the only item on the Repub­lican ballot.

The commission has five committee meetings and a legal meeting set for Monday. The meetings start at noon in commission chambers, and most items that receive committee approval require approval by the full commission later.

Other items on committee agendas include:

• Approval of an equal employment opportunity plan for the sheriff’s office, required after receiving about $333,000 in federal grants for a mobile data terminal project. The plan shows black men as “significantly underutilized” as sworn officials, sworn officers and administrative support; white men underused as administrative support; and black, white and Asian females underused in sworn patrol officer positions.

• Approval of a list of properties to demolish or have under contract to demolish by the end of the year using $500,000 in city funds.

• Approval of an emergency bid award to Beam’s Con­trac­ting for $569,025 to close a collapsed abandoned sewer line under Doug Bar­nard Parkway.

• Hearing options for design and funding renovations at the Municipal Building, a project that City Administrator Fred Russell said exceeded its earlier budget because of delays and the cost of meeting code requirements.

• A vote on transferring Tyrone Davis’ liquor, beer and wine license at Cloud Nine Sports Bar & Grill from 3156 Wrightsboro Road to 2064 Gordon Highway. Cloud Nine was shut down earlier this year for serving alcohol to minors and other violations.

Runoffs cost money..

DUH....why yes they do but so does EVERY runoff...why is this one any different.....
I'm thankful that the voters had a choice in the election....many good men wanted to run.....did that cause a run off ...well yeh but so what..live with it.....our dear gov. waste MILLIONS every year in crap......if some has to be spent on runoffs ...big deal!!
