With a couple of days to go before all four Republican candidates for the District 12 congressional seat meet for an Evans debate, two of them already are tangling.

Maria Sheffield’s campaign on Tuesday accused Wright McLeod of “going negative” and “using the Democratic tactic of tracking” after a McLeod staffer videotaped Sheffield’s recent speech to Greater Columbia County Republican Women.

The campaign accused the staffer of taping Thursday’s speech in an “attempt to intimidate and go negative,” an e-mailed announcement stated.

Noting that McLeod recently acknowledged voting in the Democratic presidential primary in 2008 and donating more than $7,000 to a Democratic candidate in 2010, the e-mail said McLeod’s campaign “is openly using Democratic attack tactics to stalk and try to intimidate his ‘fellow’ Republicans – notably, Maria Sheffield.”

McLeod’s campaign didn’t take the charge seriously.

“Would you like to meet the tracker?” asked McLeod staffer Holly Croft, laughing. “It’s me.”

Croft said she’s a member of the Columbia County group and admitted taping Sheffield’s speech.

“Every single candidate, including folks from Sheffield’s campaign, have taped other folks talking just so you have a record of what they’re saying,” Croft said. “To single our campaign out to say, ‘Oh, they’re doing this to intimidate me’? No. Not at all.”

Croft added that she personally has never voted on a Democratic ballot, “and I vote every time.”

Sheffield and McLeod will meet fellow Republican candidates Lee Anderson and Rick Allen at a debate Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Jabez Sanford Hardin Performing Arts Center in the Columbia County Library in Evans.

If it is true that Wright

If it is true that Wright voted for Obama and contributed to the DImocratic party, then he should quietly bow out of this race,,,we don't need anymore R.I.N.O.'s and it appears that is what he is....
I was actually considering him until I read this...
Barry, can you confirm he is a closet DIM?

mudslinging is good for your skin

its hard to put a lot of stock in what lawyers say... esp when it comes to talking about other lawyers.

This unwarranted attack by Sheffield's campaign manager only reflects poorly on her. Its obvious the Republican political machine is backing Rick Allen, and Sheffield is their #2. Don't know what McLeod did to garner so many attacks from the establishment, but aside from hiring a not-on-top-of-things campaign manager I don't know what.

i am not a fan of mccleod. i think he is a democrat in disguise. BUt jbartley...really....we all know that you are Maria Sheffield yourself. kind of low for you to be posting on yourself. nobody cares about sheffield running. shes not even from nor does she live in the district. she lives near atlanta.

Dont vote mccleod but even more so dont vote sheffield. that vote would be a wasted vote that could otherwise help either of the other 2 guys beat mccleod.

when it comes to donations to

when it comes to donations to democrats. lets not forget that Rick Allen donated to former Sen. Charles Walkers campaign. I dont think McLeods high school buddy ended up behind bars.

Like another poster said on another McLeod attack article, there are too many questionable connections (for me) that Allen has with his business. No smoking gun, however.

Rick Allen gave to Champ

Rick Allen gave to Champ Walker, too.

But let me get Mrs. Sheffield's complaint right. She was videoed giving her talk here in Columbia County and she thinks black helicopters are following her around? I was beginning to like her because she comes across well and apparently she is another attorney with deep pockets. Now...not so much.

I'n not pulling for either

I'n not pulling for either one, but if Sheffield thinks that only Democrats send staffers to video or track opponents' speeches, maybe she's too naive to be in politics.

Rick Allen gave to Champ!

Just about every businessman I know makes contributions to political parties, I have seen many of my friends, and I personally have done the same, give to both candidates, because they are personal friends, or business related friends. You cannot read more into this than it is!
I have know Rick Allen for many years, as a person of high morals, great business skills and ethics! I have never had any business dealings personally, but would not hesitate to do so.Judging from the reputation he has in the community, He is the best man(person) to send to Washington!

Mr. Capes, your justification

Mr. Capes, your justification of Rick Allen's support of Champ Walker as a business thing perfectly reveals the problems with Allen's candidacy.

Riverman it is clear you have never run a business in Augusta,or you would know you had to give to the Walkers in the day.

Jbartley, Explain More

I'd like to hear more about having to give to the Walkers. Now understand I know Augusta politics and understand the implications. MCG used to honor Charles Walker, the sidewalk contracts and so on. But you tell me why Allen was giving to Champ's congressional campaign? What did he think Champ would give him? Go ahead and plainly explain it. Now why is Allen running for Congress?

Techfan, Nice Link

I'll only add the "stalker" is also a woman who lives right here where the talk was given. She wasn't even following her to other sites. This is simply a bizarre charge.

Bizarre

What is bizarre is Wright McLeod saying he voted for Bill Richardson after Richardson had withdrawn from the Democratic race for president. If you waste your votes like that, how much more will you waste your votes in Congress?

Again, if he VOTED DIMocrat

Again, if he VOTED DIMocrat for a President last time, he is an idiot and NOT a TRUE Republican!
The last Democrat I voted for was Doug Barnard, back when we had true conservative Dems....there are NO SUCH things anymore!

Do NOT VOTE for WRIGHT IF HE VOTED FOR A DIMOCRAT PRESIDENT last time....proof enough for me that he doesn't have the common sense NOR the backbone to standup for what is right! He should drop out of the race....

Let the TRUE conservatives who would NEVER think the DIMS in Congress and THE POTUS should be run by the same party! Haven't we seen enough of what they have done? And HE voted for them?
Wow!
WRIGHT IS WRONG!

Photos

I find the newspaper's choices of photos to be slanted in favor of McLeod and against Sheffield. There is the large professional photo of a smiling McLeod with not a hair out of place pitted against the small candid photo of Sheffield with her mouth open talking to an unidentified person.

And the person quoted in the story, one Holly Croft, doesn't even get a picture at all. Odd.

Couldn't the newspaper use equivalent size and quality of photos for fairness sake?

I positively don't like

I positively don't like conservative voting for Democrats. However, many switched from the Democratic to the Republican Party in Georgia as we all know. I don't give McLeod a pass on that, but I do find this charge of stalking by Sheffield...BIZARRE.

Barrow?

Let's not forget that the Rep. winner still has to face Barrow, and please do not underestimate his resilience. He is calm, crafty, seasoned, and stocked up with cash. And you know what they say about money -- it talks.

Videotape

From the story:

Sheffield and McLeod will meet fellow Republican candidates Lee Anderson and Rick Allen at a debate Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Jabez Sanford Hardin Performing Arts Center in the Columbia County Library in Evans.

Maybe they could all agree to have only one videotape machine going and just copy the tape and share it between the four candidates. That way, there won't be four "tracker/stalkers" there.

:-)

Just trying to be helpful.

Dangerous

Hey, avidreader, have you seen the new Barrow ad running on TV? It is very slick. He claims to have voted against the dangerous healthcare bill. That's right, he uses the word "dangerous." He never calls it Obamacare, but that's what he's talking about. He says his vote against the dangerous bill rescued Medicare.

Spotted Barrow?

Let's run a thing like the radio stations do. If anyone spots John Barrow in town run up to him and get a pic. No reporter or news people ever interview him. Whatever happens, we need to get a Republican in that House seat. It's embarrassing to have a Democrat there. No offense to my Democratic friends.

Where is Wright's No. 1 fan?

Where is Wright's No. 1 fan? I figured he would be trolling the Chronicle Web site so that he would have something to talk about on the radio later.

By the way, Barrow just made his first major political move of the campaign. He announced that he will vote to hold Holder in contempt.

If you are saying that Austin

If you are saying that Austin "I am Superior to anyone" is supporting Wright, that's even MORE reason not to vote for him?

Do people still listen to him? The only reason he has an audience is because he follows Boortz and Rush....

I switched to Powers of the People on AM 1380--MUCH better and Tony has NATIONAL people call in--those with a brain....and then we locals get to comment..if you haven't given Powers to the People a try, you should consider switching the dial..and he NEVER insults his callers!

According to some old time political insiders around town if you are running for any office you don't want Austin Rhodes in your corner. They say ANYONE he ever supports doesn't stand a snowballs chance in hell of winning. Let's not invite him to the horse track.
