Richmond County voters to be notified of district changes

About 122,000 registered Richmond County voters will be mailed state-issued postcards next week notifying them of any changes in their state and congressional representation that resulted from state redistricting.

Board of Elections Executive Director Lynn Bailey estimated that about 75 percent of voters will see a change in their congressional, state House or state Senate districts, although voters’ polling places will not change.

The largest shift was in the expansion of the 12th Congressional District, currently represented by Augusta Democrat John Barrow, which now covers the entire county. The 10th Congressional District, represented by Athens Republican Paul Broun, was drawn out.

Senate District 22, currently represented by Sen. Hardie Davis, also saw substantial change, Bailey said. An additional shift, expanding a third Senate district into Augusta, awaits approval by the U.S. Department of Justice and will not go into effect this year.

The cards also will indicate new House district numbers assigned by the Legislature when it redrew the district lines:

• House District 119, currently represented by Republican Barbara Sims, becomes House District 123.

• House District 120, represented by Democrat Quincy Murphy, becomes House District 127.

• House District 121, represented by Democrat Wayne Howard, becomes House District 124.

• House District 122, represented by Democrat Earnest Smith, becomes House District 125.

• House District 123, represented by Democrat Gloria Frazier, becomes House District 126.

The new districts will be in effect for the July 31 general primary, and all eight affected posts are up for election Nov. 6, although only three are contested.

The cards will not reflect new Augusta Commission and Richmond County Board of Education district lines ordered into effect Monday by U.S. District Judge J. Randal Hall, Bailey said. Voters will be notified of those district lines at a later date, she said.
