Over 18,000 have voted early in Columbia County

Columbia County voters are expected to reach an all-time turnout record in the Nov. 8 election, with 18,146 casting ballots during the first two weeks of advance voting.

The number is well above the approximately 11,000 who had voted early at this time four years ago in the fast-growing county, said Nancy Gay, the executive director of the Columbia County Board of Elections.

"Having the room to put up 30 voting machines has been wonderful," Gay said. "The vibe and the energy from voters is so exciting."

The suburban county is well ahead of Augusta-Richmond County, where 10,503 had voted early as of Friday afternoon in the presidential election at the Augusta Municipal Building. Both had their busiest voting days yet Friday.

Gay said the board mailed out cards to all households a month ago reminding them of the deadline to register to vote.

"It's a younger crowd than normal," she said.

The cards probably helped turnout, as did having a new early voting location in building G3 at 610 Ronald Reagan Drive by Zaxby's, she said.

Voting has been steady in downtown Augusta. Richmond County Board of Elections Executive Director Lynn Bailey said voters were getting in and out of the Beazley Room used for voting at the Municipal Building in 10 to 15 minutes.

Both counties have Saturday voting today. Richmond County will have its second-ever Sunday voting session at the Municipal Building. Advance voting continues on weekdays at the seven sites next week.

"We felt that a big election certainly warrants every convenience we can put out there," Bailey said.

Bailey said Augusta voters are on par to meet or exceed turnout four years ago in the last presidential election. By this point then, 10,117 had voted.
