New Augusta-Richmond County sales tax package doesn't have majority support, poll shows

  • Follow Elections

A poll on Augusta’s next sales tax referendum found supporters holding a lead, though lacking a majority and with many voters undecided.

The telephone poll of 449 likely voters conducted by InsiderAdvantage on Thursday found 42 percent in favor of the special purpose local option sales tax package and bond issue and 35 percent against, with a 4 percent margin of error. Twenty-three percent were undecided.

InsiderAdvantage CEO Matt Towery said he chose words to use in the automated poll carefully – “a little bit of sweet and a little bit of sour” – because voters of every stripe generally have a tough time approving any tax.

The poll question, which mentioned funds for public safety, roads, bridges and economic development, found the most support among younger and white voters. Nearly half of those ages 18-44 supported the package, and 47 percent of white voters favored it. Only 31 percent of white voters opposed the sales tax extension and bond issue.

Among black voters, 38 percent supported the new 1 percent sales tax, which would replace the current tax in 2016. Thirty-nine percent were opposed.

Genderwise, male voters were more in favor of the sales tax package (46 percent) than female voters (38 percent).

POLL RESULTS

InsiderAdvantage asked whether likely voters would vote for (yes) or against (no) the new special purpose local option sales tax package.

Yes 42 percent

No 35 percent

Undecided 23 percent

Unfortunately, It'll Pass

The SPLOST will pass and Hardie Davis, the supporter, will be mayor.

Stop a Property Tax Increase - Vote Yes on SPLOST

We're going to pay one way or another. SPLOST helps keeps Richmond County property taxes down.

Everybody who spends money

Everybody who spends money pays with a SPLOST and not just the property owners. I like that idea.

Vote NO on SPLOST

This SPLOST is fatally flawed with large sums of money going into private pockets. All arranged in a rush behind closed doors where quid pro quo was the order of the day. Vote NO on this SPLOST. There is a whole year left to approve a SPLOST which will be of real benefit to the people of Richmond County. Lets start over and insist on some public input this time.

SPLOST

We are already paying the 1 cent tax so this is not a new tax but if it fails you can rest assured there will be a new property tax increase. This tax brings in money from Columbia County and North Augusta residents as well as all visitors to Augusta compared to property taxes. No SPLOST package is perfect but this one has a very large portion going towards Public Safety for the many needs of the Sheriff's Office, Fire Department and 911 Center. SPLOST needs our support.

That shell game has been played many Splosts in the past. Maybe ya'll need to come up with a new gimmick. Tax payers are wise to the games being played in RC to get free money.

Thank you for the numbers.

It lets us know us, we are on track for defeating this Handout TAX.

IF in NOV they STRIP out the PORK and Handouts.
I'd vote to support County Wide needed repairs and maintenance even build more centralized Government buildings out in the South Side.

Maybe a new SOUTH SIDE COURT HOUSE near the Jail already out here.

But the PORK & Handouts MUST Go, before it has my support.

Means nothing

Phone polls are not statistically significant and the results are all but useless.
