SPLOST Question: Has a tax package ever failed in Augusta?

  • Follow Elections

Augusta voters are set to vote on the consolidated government’s seventh special purpose, local option sales tax package by a referendum that appears on the May 20 ballot.

The Augusta Chronicle addresses the 1 percent sales tax collection in a continuing series until election day.

Q: Has a sales tax referendum ever failed in Augusta?

A: Yes. On Nov 2, 2004, 79 percent of voters rejected Augusta’s fifth attempt at extending the special purpose, local option sales tax.

The $478.7 million proposal, expected to take a decade to complete, included $94 million for buildings and $174.7 million for infrastructure, in addition to an $81 million sports arena, $18 million performing arts center and $40 million amphitheater as well as numerous allocations to charities and outside agencies.

A year later, 66 percent of voters approved a revised $160 million sales tax package that included $125 million for a new courthouse, jail expansions, main library and a convention center and $18.5 million for infrastructure.

Yea it sounds as if they are

Yea it sounds as if they are starting high and will settle for less on the next vote if it fails. That way we will think we have won but yet turn around and vote yes on the next one and feel better about it. Vote no on May 20th and no in future efforts. Please quit voting yourself a tax increase Augusta!

Billy Barn

Yep the last time a SPLOST failed was due to The Billy Barn. Then immediately the next year a SPLOST was put together that included the TEE center. So in the end Billy got his after all. let's make sure this one fails on May 20
