School board District 3 incumbent Alex Howard was the only candidate to qualify Wednesday, according to Lynn Bailey, the executive director of Richmond County Board of Elections.

Wednesday marked the third day of local nonpartisan qualifying in Augusta.

Howard joins Richmond County Board of Education incumbents Jack Padgett of District 6 and Frank Dolan of District 7, and newcomers Frank Beckles of District 2 and James Swanagan of Super District 9 for the Nov. 4 election. None has opposition so far.

Qualifying for the local offices of mayor, Augusta Commission, school board and two judgeships began Monday. Candidates must pay a fee and swear they are qualified to hold the posts to be included on the ballot. Qualifying continues in the board of elections office, 530 Greene St., through noon Friday.
