Residents in Grovetown and Harlem head to the polls Tuesday to fill seats on their respective city councils.

Three people are vying for two open seats on the Grovetown City Council currently occupied by Lee Briggs and Bruce Stoddard. The election is non-partisan.

Briggs is a John Deere operations manager. He was appointed to fill the more than four months remaining of former Councilman Sonny McDowell’s term. Briggs is seeking a full term. Stoddard, who has served 12 years on the council, is not seeking re-election.

Retired Columbia County teacher Sylvia Martin and hairdresser Vickie Cook also are running. Martin previously was considered to fill McDowell’s seat.

Four people qualified to seek one of two seats on Harlem City Council. Seats currently occupied by John Thigpen and Rudolph Dixon are up for re-election.

Thigpen, a chemical senior engineer at DSM Chemicals in Augusta, served on the council since 2003 and is seeking a fourth term. Dixon, a retired Methodist minister, is vying for his seventh term.

Newcomers Dan Bellavance and Lee Ann Meyer are challenging the incumbents. Bellavance is a blackflow technician with Akima and works at Fort Gordon. Meyer is an owner of Red Oak Manor, a bed and breakfast in Harlem.

Mayor Bobby Culpepper is running unopposed for a third term. Culpepper was originally appointed to fill the remaining term of Scott Dean in July 2008 and was elected to a three-year term in 2010. He’s the former owner of Culpepper Ford in Thomson and lists himself as a realtor on the affidavit form filed during qualifying.

Voters must live inside the city and be registered to vote in the non-partisan election.
