Add Augusta Commission member Marion Williams to a list of hopefuls considering a run for the Georgia Senate District 22 seat in 2014.

The outspoken commissioner said he is “contemplating” a run. He won’t make his decision
based on whether Sen. Hardie Davis, D-Augusta, runs again.

Former Commissioner Joe Bowles revealed last week that he’ll announce plans to seek the Senate seat when Davis reveals plans to run for Augusta mayor, something he has yet to officially do.

“We need somebody in Atlanta who’s going to support Augusta. Get Augusta up on the map. Some of the state services need to be done in Augusta,” Williams said, mentioning the need for more state government offices to be in Georgia’s second-largest city.

Williams ran for the Senate seat in 2008 and was trounced by Ed Tarver in the Democratic primary. Tarver resigned the following year after being appointed to be U.S. attorney. Davis resigned his House seat to run for Tarver’s Senate seat and defeated former state court solicitor Harold Jones in a January 2010 special election.
Williams, who defeated Jones in November for the Super District 9 seat, said his outspokenness is an asset that voters appreciate and that it “made no difference” what party affiliation he chose, though a Democratic run was likely.

“It’s about right and wrong for me,” he said. “We don’t have enough people standing out, calling it like it is. That’s what God gave me, the ability to tell it like it is.”

Williams, a pastor and CSX retiree said it didn’t matter that Democrats were in the minority in Atlanta because he’ll speak out.

“You can’t stay on the fence. You’ve got to be either on or off, up or down,” he said.
Though Williams acquired a reputation as argumentative during his first two terms on the commission, which ended in 2007, and denies he has softened, commission colleague Donnie Smith said he’s become easier to work with.
“Marion’s been a lot better commissioner this time,” Smith said.

Darn, bleary pre-coffee eye

Darn, bleary pre-coffee eye misread it. I missed the "state" part. I thought he was going to toss his hat in for the US Senate. He has the "out there" credentials of the announced GOP opponents. I figured if a debate between Paul Broun and Marion Williams didn't end up in a fistfight, nothing would. I was getting ready to set the DVR and set it to "never delete". Just darn. Darn, darn, darn, darn, darn.

Pointless

His conduct would not be tolerated in the Senate. If elected, he would be an unmitigated disaster for Augusta at a number of levels.

Can't Read This Kind of Stuff While Drinking Coffee

I started laghing and coffee came out of my nose...good thing it had cooled down a lot. I can't laugh TOO hard, because who would've thought that he, "I've got a copy of Fred Russell's hard drive", could get re-elected to the Augusta Commission??

Citizens of ARC, don’t get so

Citizens of ARC, don’t get so happy so soon in thinking that you are getting rid of Marion “Inspect what you expect” Williams. Williams as well as people like Jackson are simply posturing at this time, neither one can win at the next level. Back to Williams, he was lucky in the district 9 race against Jones. All of the planets aligned up perfectly; he had the right opponent which lacked any interpersonal skills, had no charisma at all as well as being viewed by members of his “OWN” community as being standoffish. My question to Williams would be who would support you financially. You had problems raising money for your super district race, this will surely be repeated in any outrageous thoughts that you may have in running for the state senate seat. If by some strange twist of fate you were to win; Augusta would lose. Your so called style of leadership would not be tolerated under the “GOLDEN DOME”, you would be “GOOBLED” up by much more seasoned statesmen/women and you would not be able to get anything done for ARC, you would be alienated and ostracized by your colleges. Williams you have difficulty getting 6 votes on the commission floor, how in the world do you think you could get the much more required votes on the Senate floor. Perception is dangerous. In your mind you perceive yourself as a “REAL LEADER” of the people and this perception of yourself has become “YOUR” reality and that sir is quite dangerous to “ALL” citizens of ARC. So don’t get to happy fine citizens of ARC, Marion “ROLL CALL VOTE“ Williams ain’t going nowhere.
