Some NA residents say alcohol referendum not on ballots

Several North Augusta residents, including a city council member, said they received ballots without the Sunday alcohol sales referendum on them.

City council member Arthur Shealy went online a few weeks ago after a constituent asked for a copy of the referendum and found two sample ballots for North Augusta precinct No. 67.

Only one of the ballots has the referendum on it.

Cynthia Holland, executive director of Aiken County Registration and Elections, said the difference in the ballots was based on where the voter lives.

“For people who are in the city limits, they should get it,” she said of the alcohol-sales question.

Those who live outside the city limits did not have the question on their ballot.

However, the difference prompted Shealy to ask about it Tuesday when he arrived to vote at the precinct at Riverview Activities Center.

“Before I even started, I said I needed to know if the alcohol referendum was on it,” he said in a telephone interview.

It wasn’t.

When he requested the ballot with the referendum on it, “my poll manager asked me if it was really important for me personally to vote on this issue. I reminded him that I am on City Council,” Shealy wrote in a Facebook post on his page, urging other city residents to be sure to ask for the ballot with the alcohol referendum on it.

After a poll manager called the elections office, Shealy was given the correct ballot.

Voters were encouraged to let the poll manager know if they thought they received the incorrect ballot so that it could be corrected if the voter had the wrong ballot, Holland said.

“Poll managers are instructed to give them the correct ballots,” she said.

The outcome of the vote will determine whether restaurants, grocery stores and convenience stores in the city of North Augusta can sell alcohol on Sundays. The referendum does not include liquor stores.
