Roundtree talks of love, reconciliation at forum

The crowd that gathered Thursday night to hear from one of the men who hopes to be the next sheriff of Richmond County didn’t get the usual words about politics, voting and law enforcement.

Sheriff's candidate Richard Roundtree talked to guests during Thursday's meet-and-greet event in Augusta.

Richard Roundtree had a message of love.

“Love and connections are at the center of our attachments. It is the objective of our lives,” said Roundtree, speaking to more than 60 people at the Foundation Club on Azalea Drive. The Democratic candidate had been invited to speak at the event, put on by Lewis Blanchard, a businessman and friend of sheriff’s Capt. Scott Peebles, who lost to Roundtree in the Aug. 21 runoff election.

Roundtree said the love he was speaking of was the kind espoused by Martin Luther King Jr., Jesus Christ, and poets Roy Croft and Elizabeth Barrett Browning.

“We could be healthy. We could be fit. We could be accomplished or we could be wealthy, yet none of these things would mean anything without people to share them with,” he said. “Being connected to others costs nothing, but it does require courage, it does require patience and it does require understanding.”

Roundtree, the Richmond County schools public safety lieutenant who will face Republican Freddie Sanders in November, said it is time for people to come together to heal old wounds that have divided the community. It will be difficult, but it is not something that can’t be achieved, he said.

“If we know our worth, then we need to go out and get our worth. If we know our dreams, then go out and get our dreams,” he said. “If we know that we have the tools to restore this city, then we need to start restoring this city.”

Jerry Tiller, an Augusta native who was listening in the crowd, said the words had an effect.

“He’s right,” Tiller said. “No matter where you live, everybody wants to be safe. You want your children to do better than you did.”

Tiller, a retiree from AT&T, said he intended to support Roundtree in the general election.

“Whoever is elected sheriff is going to need everybody’s help,” he said.

Vendettas and Grudges.

I honestly hope my political comment that has been removed was not viewed by some as a vendetta or a grudge. I posted my frank thoughts about those who were at the party playing on their words in support of Roundtree in the most fair way I know without attacking anyone while I voiced my support of Sanders. That is not personal, a vendetta or a grudge. It is political and I don't know any of the players personally.

Like someone at the AC told me, when he said he doesn't know or care about any of the players either, ditto me except observations I make. The regular readers know that. They know me. My comments are not personal in any way.

Having made my statement, I bow out of commenting on the Sheriff's race. I think I finally got IT. I'll only talk about the river, parks and the weather.

My personal feelings reb

Before the run-off the paper couldn't do enough to promote SP...it was waaay overboard imo.....ole rtree was left hanging....& I actually felt bad for him....I thought dang ...at least be fair with the articles ....say something positive sometimes.....didn't see it ...but NOW all has changed...heh...now since sp lost the runoff .....the world turned upside down I guess...
I'm for Freddie..that won't change.......BUT I want to see fairness in the paper......I doubt we will change any minds with our chit chat.

OH

Do you think this subject has been deemed "Gentle Discussion Only" by the monitor(s)?

Hmmmm

That explains why the AC is putting up articles at a 3 to 1 ratio covering Mr. Roundtree the former and Sanders the latter. Also why Spotted or Slideshows of Mr. Roundtree appear while Meet and Greets for Mr. Sanders are obviously missing. But then, you can't be everywhere at once, can you?

Ah, the art of Journalism is a dying form. Objectivity sadly missing, sometimes in service to my preference, but more and more not.

Pull the strings, make em dance, cute little puppets we all are.

A Poem by Henry Gibson

There once was a candidate from Nantucket
He put all his hopes in one bucket
In the boat he did jump
Made it over the hump
But the media told him “Go stuck it”

Roy Croft Saying

Words of poet Roy Croft who was espoused by Roundtree at the party:

Roy Croft...(Look it up if you don't believe me): “I love you not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you.”

Playing Favorites....

I too am bothered by the AC's coverage of this Sheriff's Race. Hate that one of the loudest media voices we have in Augusta is playing favorites. Maybe I'm a bit naive and this happens all over, but I would think that a media outlet like that would try to give the public an equal share of publicity for each candidate. Obviously the AC supported Peebles in the beginning, and now they've moved on to Roundtree. I know for a fact Freddie Sanders had two events scheduled for this week, one at T's and the other at Julian Smith BBQ pit. No coverage for his event's, which is sad, because I know if more people were exposed to him, his platform, his beliefs, his qualifications, and his personality they would likely support him. I understand you already have your die hard supporters for each candidate, but for those who are undecided it's unfair to just feed them one candidate over the other.

People seem to have a misconception about Mr. Sanders and his desire to become Sheriff. They think all he want's to do is push papers, and keep everything old school. Well too bad they haven't talked with the man, or gone out and listened to him speak. Yes, he does have an old school sense about him, and he's gonna take some of those ideas and put them into place, but he's also gonna implement fresh and new ideas to the department as well. For those to doubt Freddie Sanders, for those who don't believe he will give Richmond County his best, you are sadly mistaken. All you have to do is look at his qualifications and speak with the man himself. He has Richmond County in his blood! He has always served this county and it's citizens in one way or the other. Whether it was working on the Suburban Fire Department, the Sheriffs Department, or through practicing law, he has always wanted what's best for Richmond County.

Hopefully before the election people will be exposed to this information, and possibly get a chance to hear him speak. If not it will be a shame!!

Questions

Questions: Is Lewis Blanchard mentioned in this story?

Was his club used for this party?

Was his club used by Scott Peebles a lot during the previous campaigns?

Is Blanchard the previous backer of Scott Peebles?

Is Blanchard now supporting Richard Roundtree?

Was poet Roy Croft mentioned in the article?

Did Roy Croft also say:
I love you, not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you?

That pretty much covers what I said before in the post that was removed, but is it a vendetta?

Like I said, SOMEONE (guess who) suggested before that I not comment on the Sheriff's race and I'm going to stick with that suggestion. Only weather talk from me from now on.

Ode to a River ... man!

River, now you know that you and everyone else gets free reign to talk all you want to about Roundtree, Sanders, Silas and Ivey. Hell, you can run roughshod all over Sheriff Strength, his wife, and any of their kin folk on either side of their family ... BUT ... you cannot talk about the two you mentioned earlier, who shall remain protected from criticism and untouchable regarding any and all past or present indiscretions. There will be NONE of that mess on here MISTER!

Geez, buddy, you've only had seven months to get this through your thick skull ... what ARE you thinking? lol ... I guess I have residual effects from last nights Benadryl and I am still pretty damn smart-aleck-y today too! :)

AC coverage

Journalism is by definition, an exercise in imperfection. I would like to attend every event, but I hope everyone understands that is not possible. However, November is not here yet, so I will be writing more about Freddie Sanders and his campaign in coming weeks. As for this article, I thought the event was significant, since it was hosted by Lewis Blanchard, a close friend and supporter of Scott Peebles. If anyone has any heartburn about what I write or tips about what I should be covering, feel free to e-mail me at steve.crawford@augustachronicle.com. And as always, thanks for reading. I appreciate your comments and attention to detail.

Ordinarily, I'd agree, but I don't want to cause trouble for someone who feels the pressure. All the hard to understand actions are finally making sense to me thanks to words from a few people. We are all in THIS together.

Welcome, and personally, I think as an employee of the owner of these boards you should be awarded 10,000 points out of the gate, whatever they are good for. I am sure you report fairly, I am not sure you get to choose what hits paper in ink. Freddie is working like a dog, and it sure does seem the paper's coverage is focused on the warm fuzzy resulting from this magical transformation of Mr. Roundtree.

Some posters on here, myself included, are trying to shine a spotlight on the hypocrisy of Peebles and company pulling behind Rouundtree. It sure does seem to be an uphill battle.

Freddie working like a dog??
Unpublished

Freddie working like a dog?? He's got a website just like roundtree does. I've been there many times hoping that he articulates his vision and mission and goals for the office he seeks. Still nothing except for several interviews that he's done in which he hems and haws around every issue that he is asked about. I don't think he's even given it any thought.
