The crowd that gathered Thursday night to hear from one of the men who hopes to be the next sheriff of Richmond County didn’t get the usual words about politics, voting and law enforcement.

Sheriff's candidate Richard Roundtree talked to guests during Thursday's meet-and-greet event in Augusta.

Richard Roundtree had a message of love.

“Love and connections are at the center of our attachments. It is the objective of our lives,” said Roundtree, speaking to more than 60 people at the Foundation Club on Azalea Drive. The Democratic candidate had been invited to speak at the event, put on by Lewis Blanchard, a businessman and friend of sheriff’s Capt. Scott Peebles, who lost to Roundtree in the Aug. 21 runoff election.

Roundtree said the love he was speaking of was the kind espoused by Martin Luther King Jr., Jesus Christ, and poets Roy Croft and Elizabeth Barrett Browning.

“We could be healthy. We could be fit. We could be accomplished or we could be wealthy, yet none of these things would mean anything without people to share them with,” he said. “Being connected to others costs nothing, but it does require courage, it does require patience and it does require understanding.”

Roundtree, the Richmond County schools public safety lieutenant who will face Republican Freddie Sanders in November, said it is time for people to come together to heal old wounds that have divided the community. It will be difficult, but it is not something that can’t be achieved, he said.

“If we know our worth, then we need to go out and get our worth. If we know our dreams, then go out and get our dreams,” he said. “If we know that we have the tools to restore this city, then we need to start restoring this city.”

Jerry Tiller, an Augusta native who was listening in the crowd, said the words had an effect.

“He’s right,” Tiller said. “No matter where you live, everybody wants to be safe. You want your children to do better than you did.”

Tiller, a retiree from AT&T, said he intended to support Roundtree in the general election.

“Whoever is elected sheriff is going to need everybody’s help,” he said.

Feel the Love

Choice of words can be very revealing.

“If we know our worth, then we need to go out and get our worth. If we know our dreams, then go out and get our dreams,” he said.

Now perhaps RR means we need to prove our worth and pursue our dreams, or maybe he means exactly what he says. How do you go get your worth and dreams? Do you take them from someone else? Isn't that the very genesis of crime?

I do agree with this statement “If we know that we have the tools to restore this city, then we need to start restoring this city.” I believe each and everyone of us can make a difference. Some make small contributions such as smiling at people, letting someone in in traffic, or a warm hello. Some offer larger contributions through public service and leadership.

Where we seem to be getting off the track is in misunderstanding the role of Sheriff. He is not, by design, supposed to give us a warm fuzzy feeling. He should serve as the leader of a group sworn to protect and serve law abiding citizens, and apprehend and arrest law breaking citizens. Not socially reengineer our societal structure through "hope and change". Just make Richmond County a place to be avoided by criminals.

So let's take this race off the Love Boat and onto the rough and tumble mat of Law Enforcement. I believe Sanders is the man for that direction

Amazing

Maybe I just don't understand what this article is saying. Yes, we need to love our neighbor and yes we need to quit letting racial issues divide us but how is this truly related to the job we need him to do as sheriff. I mean if he sees a guy coming out of my house with my TV in his arms is he going to arrest him or give him a big hug? Just wondering!

A law enforcement

A law enforcement professional addressing people about love. Dr. Drew handles love issues. This guy needs to be addressing crime and how to figure out who murdered my neighbor.

Roundtree's New Campaign Theme Song:
Barry White - Can't Get Enough Of Your Love Baby.

What next having High Tea with the Augusta Woman's club, a reading at the Augusta Poets society? Or may be tip toeing through the tulips with the Garden club.>

Seriously, is any one buying this lame attempt at repacking Roundtree?

Bullseye River!

He said..

Whether Roundtree or Sanders wins in November, they should embrace each other because those two are the only place honesty resides. Leave the others to their own machinations.

Handlers are sooo obvious.....pat me & I'll pat you...Rtree step out of the shadow...you will be better off on your own...

Funny thing

The punks committing these crimes aren't reading the love notes---feel good letters.....

Didn't we try that with the terror groups....I mean I think Obama gave all the love he had & even bowed down in front......& what are they doing now......don't think they are returning our love right now.......heck we even give them billions to show our love......now I can think of a few potholes & bridges we could fix here in the good ole USA!

The Chronicle posted photos of the Roundtree rally. Interesting pics. I saw "Miss Monique" was there, Johnny Hensley and Scott Peebles....in addition to Blanchard. Everyone check out all the pics. Interesting.

Johnny might have shown up;

Johnny might have shown up; but conspicuously missing were "The Redhots" and "The Shag Club". They'll be supporting Freddie all the way.

Just got back from six days of summer's last beach music and was pleased to see a number of Freddie's signs proudly displayed in the southern portion of the county.

Not saying all Roundtree supporters are criminals; but if you were one; who would you vote for?

Law and order, tough on crime, make Augusta distasteful to roaches, what do you do? Offer the alternative of acceptance of irresponsibility toward a civilized society. The answer is just a hug away. Salvation and Redemption in River City are just a matter of understanding and walking the other man's shoes. Criminals often walk in other men's and ladie's shoes. Put a little love in your heart. From news reports, TREE knows a lot about loving in the RCSO. TREE will transfer this love to the streets. Wait, are their individuals who do this already for a small fee?

Faith,hope,and love, and the

Faith, hope, and love, and the greatest of these are...? Love! We were born to serve our Lord and "Love thy neighbor." That's it, our life's reason for living. Now if we can do what is asked of us through His teachings then it's more than possible to survive what satan is serving up. Healings happen everyday in one fashion or another. I believe that through prayer healing can happen in our community as well as the entire world. Believe in your heart that Jesus Christ, our Risen Savior is alive and well and waiting to hear from all of us. Faith that He can heal the wounds inflicted and the Hope that all who read these words just believe and learn that the root of faith and hope begins with love, in His name. These are some of The Simple Truths of God.

Heh heh, based on his history, if anyone understands "love" being "the objective of our lives" it would be Roundtree. At least "three female officers on his shift" are proof of that.

Hopefully the commissioners have already started saving for the lawsuit settlement fund.

The results show just how divided Augusta really is. @least he is leading the cause of expressing more LOVE in this are other than hate....how many other local leaders have preached this message???

Love God, then love your neighbor. How can you go wrong with that???

I understand his message... of course those with evil in their hearts will not get it...only because they choose not to.

Don't act like Augusta, Ga is not divided as heck....look @ the runoff results......how much closer can you get?

RICHARD ROUNDTREE FOR SHERIFF !!

Oooo! The way some of you folks make it sound, I slid under cover of darkness into the Richard Roundtree gathering. As a matter of fact I walked PROUDLY in the front door to learn MORE (what a concept) about "The Tree". Basically, if he's good enough for SCOTT PEEBLES....Roundtree is good enough for ME. Nobody knows him better than Scott Peebles. And, quite frankly, I was very impressed. Degree in Criminal Justice, Masters in a couple of areas, articulate, compassionate and a man you don't want to be on the arresting end of your encounter----Huge. He and Scott or on the same page with where the Sheriff's Department needs to go and about 26,000 people agree. Don't get me wrong. I love Freddie Sanders. We've been friends for years...and he plays one hellava guitar. But, IT'S TIME FOR A CHANGE. My age group and Freddie's....we're part of the old system....and we're dying out (not today I hope (lol)...but EVERYONE KNOWS....IT'S TIME. And as far as the Red Hots and the Shaggers....love'em all, but they know I would NEVER tell what they should do. Now, what are YOU going to do to move Richmond County forward with young, dynamic leadership in the Sheriff's Department. JOHNNY HENSLEY (or jhensley43@gamil.com)

Riverman and Seenit....Really?

River says and Seenit agrees "Whether Roundtree or Sanders wins in November, they should embrace each other because those two are the only place honesty resides."

Honesty resides in Roundtree? Now, he has done nothing blatantly dishonest, I guess. Frolicking with three co-workers on the clock could be considered a moral slip up, I guess. Posting as grateful mother might be considered deceptive, I guess. Making statements as Grateful Mother which were fabrications could be considered a fabrication, I guess.

All indicate a failure and lapses in judgement. Judgement is defined as the ability to judge, make a decision, or form an opinion objectively, authoritatively, and wisely, especially in matters affecting action; good sense; discretion. Judgement is a key element in leadership.

Honesty.....I guess if George Washington used suspect judgement when he chopped down the cherry tree, at least he said "I cannot tell a lie" when confronted with it.

Not sure of the value of one characteristic without the other.

I know that Freddie Sanders possesses both.
